I think I'll buy Mr D. a reversing camera for Christmas... two actually, so he can put one on the back of the van too.
Is there any particular brand that is better than others? Or any that are duds?

Hi i bought ours off ebay, $60 total works a charm i'm going to get another camera for the van our moniter has 2 sockets to put the cameras in. I don't need to direct him on to the coupling they are magic and simple to install. I wasn't sure about using ebay but i figured at that price what have we got to lose, Cheers colsa.

Sorry... I just did a search on reversing cameras, tons of information, no need to go over it all again. Thanks anyway!

Do not buy a reversing camera if you want it for the back of the van you will need a rear vision camera.
The reversing camera will only work while you vechicle is in reverse gear, I have a rear vision camera fitted and I can see ALL of those fast cars and trucks behind me and I get on the radio (ch40) and help the truckkies overtake.
The Unit I have is called a Poron and you can see it here: http://www.polarisrearvision.com.au/

I see all that in my mirrors, except for those stupid people who drive their cars and try to hitch hike on my airconditioner.
Tailgaters are the enemy.
I chat to the truckies to let them know I've seen them in my mirrors, call them around when it's clear, and let them know when they're past me.
I think a camera would just confuse me. I do it ok with the mirrors.

Some people prefer mirrors, some prefer camera's, I use both, each to their own.

Our research has taught us that you always must have your wide mirrors on when towing, regardless of whether you have rear-view/reversing cameras on.
Our biggest problem has been to decide where to put the monitor in the Prado, the dash has a big console with the UHF radio in it and the GPS is inbuilt in the console... doesnt leave much space, and we are wondering about the ones who clip on over the mirrors... is it safe?

A mate had that type and advised me against it, they tend to come loose and vibrate so you cannot see the screen properly, I have a gps and the rear vision screen sitting on my dash of my 80 series.

Yes Wombat, Thanks, that is the advice we have had too. We are looking into re-locating the UHF radio off the dash, have never liked it there anyway, its in a biggish box thingy, and I feel it obstructs the view a bit.

Here's a shot of our setup, it does look a bit large but the angle is low, the screens are to the left of the dash so do not block my view when driving, although it does look like it from that shot.

You get a camera for the back of your car/4x4 (helps to connect van without anybody else trying to direct you) and another one to go on the rear of your van.
