Some of the real estate agents in North Sydney have short term units for hire. They are much cheaper then the motels. I used to get mine through Century 21 R/E.

HI Lilly, just for your consideration try the YHA, they have 2 central locations with free bus provided by Sydney tourism ( green bus that runs a city loop (via Circular Quay) so hop on/off where you like.....you dont need YHA for this of course. We stayed at Central YHA, railway station only 2 mins, excellent market 5 min, China town and excellent cheap eating all within mins of location. No shortage of e mail facilities nearby. Whatever, have a great time, Ozi

Hi again Lilly, if you do check out YHA and join (membership for 12mths is very cheap) it entitles you to stay anywhere.( you can get a private room if avail) If you check out NSW trainfares I think you will find a $2.50 fare (all day?) but know in advance before ticket counter as we encountered a less than helpful "dispenser"' and were charged wrong fare to airport and ended up paying extra. Around Central station we found so many cheap eating places, breakfast $5.00, capucino $1.00 etc. If you like Vietnamese or Chinese they are so cheap around China Town. Hope you find what you want and have a great time....we loved Sydney!

The 2.50 fare is available to all old age pensioners but only NSW seniors. Got caught out with that when I had an ACT seniors card.
As regards the fares on the Airport Line, the stations are all run by private enterprise and you pay extra on top of your fare to use these.

When we have to go to Sydney and stay over we usually stay at the Formula 1 at Wentworthville and then catch the train into Sydney. Know it isn't everyone's cup of tea but it suits us. If it's a nice day and we aren't in any hurry we catch the River Cat.

Hi Lilly,
Have a look at Glenferrie Lodge, it is a hostel type accomodation (own room, twin, double or singles etc, etc) with shared shower/toilet units (more than one) and lounge/TV, dining room with servery for meals (cheap, plentiful and cooked by proper chef), also fresh fruit on the tables.
It is overlooking the Harbour and hard to believe but in the same street as the PM's lodge and Admiralty House on Kirribilli. You can walk down to Kirribilli jetty nearby to catch a ferry across to Circular Quay and the city, also trains from Circular Quay to wherever including the Airport, ferries also to Manly and the Harbour generally.
You can also catch the train at Milsons point on the south side of Sydney Harbour Bridge, a short walk from the Lodge as is Luna Park. For very cheap accomodation you feel like your living in Millionaires row!! Have a look at this link;
