I would appreciate info re free camps, parks, prices etc from Cairns anticlockwise around the block. We plan to leave here beginning of May next year and take 6/8 months to get home. North Qld is chokkas during winter and wonder if NT & WA will be the same. We will bypass Darwin and will be keeping on the sealed roads. Anyone going that way now doing a blog?
Thanks chappy

Get yourself a copy of Camps Australia Wide No 5. Gives you state by state all camping areas including the free ones. A very valuable book to carry with you.

I agree with all other comments Camps 5 is a should be if anyone is taking to the road , it is a small cost if you can't afford to buy one you can't afford to be out there anyway. Chappy what a asked but I wonder why you would bypass Darwin they have sealed road in Darwin, doing a trip like your doing you want to see has much has you can

Darwin would be a must see for me too. To go all that way and not go that little bit further seems such a waste considering for most you don't know if you will go that way again.

If he is like me he has seen it enough times. I don't waste time up there if going to WA.

Thanks to all who have replied. Sorry it was a bit of an ask. I should have been more specific. I have the camps book 4 and have been emailing tourist info places as well as the usual research. We are bypassing Darwin & Kakadu as we went 4 years ago. I was looking for comments from GNs who may be in the area and found changes or felt strongly about places of interest. On the road I make notes in my Camps book as we find sites that are now fenced or toilets blocks closed. We will be returning home on the Stuart Highway. Cheers to all chappy

We are at Broome - going right round - anticlockwise. It seems that every van park is absolutely full so we are continually booking ahead. For you: Cloncurry - book ahead. Same with Mount Isa, Katherine, Kununurra and Broome. Most of the roadside stops have lots of vans, too. At Mary Pool roadside stop between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing WA, we counted 95 vans. We have travelled these roads over the past 14 years of my retirement but we've never seen it as clogged with vans as this year has been so far. Good luck!

Dampier Transit Pk, max stay 3 days, heaps cheaper than anything else in the area. Book early.
40 mile Beach sth of Dampier worth a couple of days, small fee.
Coronation Beach just nth of Geraldton, toilet block, small fee.
Many other free camps on the way, do as we do, pick one & pull up by 2pm, time to set up then watch every one else struggling for a spot while you have a 'yummie'
Cheers Neil
