Gday... We are slowly (very slowly) heading toward SW WA and have heard a few times that the water in WA and in particular in the SW of WA has a high calcium content which clogs up the pipes in the van particularly HWS, Washing Machine and Shower etc. Suggestions are that an external water filter is strongly advised - ie filter that filters all water before it gets into the van, tanks or mains pressure. Comments from the wise please.
Cheers Julie & John

Hi ..
The water quality in WA is generally fine except maybe at Coral bay where the taps were heavily calcified. They provided limited desalinated? water for drinking.
We use an on tap filter for drinking (when I think to switch it over) Some people seem to be more effected by water sources than others. We have never purchased bottled water in Aussie.
Back to the point of your question ... We have always connect whatever reticulated water is available. After 10yrs with this van we have had no trouble with taps or pipes. Of course we check & clean the hot water system sacrificial anode after every trip & replace it when necessary - about every 3 years.

Simple water filters will not soften water or remove the calcium content. You need an extensive system to do that.

We had 12 months in WA. Perth was as far as we were in the north but did the south extensively and had no trouble with the water was quite good to drink, unlike Adelaide we bought water the whole 16 months we were there. In Millicent at the moment good water here as well.

Generally WA water is really good, even bore water in outer regions.
I found if I chilled my drinking water I removed any risk of tummy troubles after a bout of giardia on a station, the source of which was never established. I blamed the bore which supplied the homestead, but no one else got crook. I used to drink water at room temperature, but don't do it so much anymore.
Nanga Bay Resort warned against consuming the bore water. They have numerous rainwater tanks around the complex to fill containers for human consumption.
The thermal pool was a great place to rest and restore the bones, and the showers are supplied by bores, so your skin may go hard - joking.
There comes a point when you have to just trust. If the locals drink it and survive, it must be ok.
I do filter my dinking water only, but in Cairns I'm probably wasting my filters.
Ask a locl if you have any doubts.
