What do you carry with you for emergencies or small injuries etc on the road, .......
I don't mean your regular medical conditions and their medications.
 
Have any of you done a St Johns or other course?

My most used things are metho , povidone iodine, salt, boiled water.

 Metho is also great for wiping down surfaces to clean easily or to disinfect apart from its 5 million other uses!

the dragon is a fully accredited carer and as such must undergo st john training twice a year in order to keep her accreditation, we then have access to st john medical kits at discounted rates, so we just said "we'll have that one" the biggest and shiniest outback one, dont ask me whats in it, I wouldn't have a clue, never needed it yet but better to have and not need than to need and not have

While working on the cattle stations in the Kimberley I was often the only person around the compound, and the first on hand to tend to injuries. The stations were issued with Flying Doctor kits for the very serious ills and injuries, but for day to day matters I had a comprehensive f/a kit around the homestead. I also did the Senior First Aid 4 day course in Broome. Now I'm travelling I carry a basic f/a kit in the car, but more stuff in the van. My biggest fear about this travelling thing is being the first to arrive at a crash site.

hi Denise, To be an operational member of Sea Rescue I have to hold a first aid certificate, the course is paid for by the organisation, Only carry a basic St Johns firstaid kit in each car & caravan.  Cheers Daryl

Granny that thought hadn't occurred to me...yet its quite possible I guess, in more remote areas particularly. Its a horrible prospect..

A fellow I know...and this is a true first hand story...was/is an ambo and was first to arrive at a road scene where his wife was killed in a terrible way. He continued to work as an ambo afterwards ...talk about inner strength!! I have great respect for him.
 

Yes, it's been my worst fear. I travel alone, hitch up and do my own maintenance, go to strange places, visit remote areas, but my biggest fear is being the first one there. I'm sure I could help in some small way, who knows. When we're confronted with these things inner energy, adrenaline I suppose, comes out. When it's all over then the crash comes. I'd better be careful about using up my adrenaline, I only have one adrenal gland left.

I don't worry about this sort of thing but I have thought about it and hope I am prepared to be able to help in some small way should the occasion arise.

I am a firm believer in Murphy's Law, "if it is going to happen then it will do so at the most inconvient moment."

 

Yeah, like everything in life, we can only be aware and as prepared as possible. Work with what we know. The other handy device in these circumstances is the UHF radio to call for help if needed.
