Just happened to see a english couple here last night at the camp kitchen, they were in the motel rooms & travelling in a hire car.
He was just amazed at the hwy up here ,long & staight , very little traffic. That was all good ,then he proceded to brag about travelling at 180kls ph all the way up from Alice.
Need I say any more, I took a bit more than the micky out of him.The speed ltd is 130kl , p/h not to mention the wandering stock, & wild life. Then there,s the patrol cars, told him we deport people for less than that.Left with his tail between his legs. His wife,s main worry was the amount of fuel they used.
Makes you wonder.

You tell him Foxie!
The trouble with doing those speeds for long periods of time (apart from the hazards you mentioned) is that after a while 180kph seems like a quiet drive in the country. Trouble is when trouble strikes it strikes at light speed. One has only to remember the Japanese crew in the Cannonball Run some years ago. They were driving some sort of rocket from Nippon at 200kph plus and decided that they had to pull over to see their support crew or something. Trouble is they pulled over onto the dirt shoulder of the road at warp 4 and killed a couple of folks. In any case that was the story we heard at the time.

That was just about how it happened too Ian. How often have you been driving for a couple of hours.........at the speed limit........ and all of a sudden have to slow down to 60 to go through a town. Feels like you are walking. Imagine that from 180 to 200 plus??.......Wankers!!
Onya Justcrusin......for getting in to them!!

NT roads are built for safe travel with sensible speed, according to the vehicle and the driver's ability.
I can't say the same for Qld roads though.
Too many handicaps out there to make that speed safe anywhere.
Those people often cause the accident, may not be involved, and the others get killed because of his foolish, irresponsibility driving behaviour.

oh i remember last time i went to alice the bus driver was saying it used to be open speed to the rock , its not anymore due to some people having a very tragic accident with a camel killed a couple or few not sure how many but yep i agree who needs to be doing that speed anyway and what for ,dont get to see too much hey ?.
But unfortunately it does fall on deaf ears at times shame that ? :(

After driving on English roads, the roads in Oz especially the NT would seem like paradise to the Poms, maybe he couldn't wait to get there, paradise that is, stupid bugger.
