I hope i dont scare any one but sometimes i can post some weird stuff..
Its kind of funny how life is, or isn't , i always said if I ever get to 40, ill be happy,
im one month away...scary
I grew up on a farm, well, hobby farm, 2 achers , loved it there, had animals most of our time there, I thought when i was a kid i would end up taking over the farm , but then my mum started getting crook alot so we decided to move into town.
And in 2006 she passed away from dementia , very hard, i was there and wattched her take her last breath... it was hard....
any ways , going after that to just a few months after my mum passsed away i slowely lost my mobility, and could barely walk, or eat properly, or hold a knife etc, some years a go i had a fall and must have cased some damage that wasn't detected, but any way aftrer my crappy wrong diagnosis i went to Sydney to a neauro doc, i had to go into surgery straight away ,i was a few weeks away from being permantly in a wheel chair...
very scary ...
half a year later after the op i said to dad i want to go do some traviling while i can..
so my neice and i went to Turkey for a while, great experience
after home for a short time dad and i went to the UK, awsome too
then last year dad wanted to tour aussieland, in a motor home, and family were all against it , at his age as you guys know 86, they told him not to buy it, but he did, and i copt alot of crap from them, for helping him etc, and i was just about to give up the van and try and convince him to sell it, then we went and saw an aunt of mine, who now is in a dementia ward and didint even recognize me ,
after that i had a long think, and said to dad , stuff the family, lets travel, lets see whats out there, do what we want to do, and he agreed to that idea,
so now we got some trips planned and also were off to perth in june/july..
so thats how i got to bei here , or on the foruims, throu all the crap that life dishes out, sometimes you just got to hang in there, even when its sh!TT just do it...
if it dont work out first go keep trying...
look at Jessica Watson, 16 and sailing around the world on her own in little boat...
what have we got to be afraid off?

sure ,respect every one and listen to advice , but make up your own mind..
I have been doing some planning for when dad inst around , which he is encouraging me to, so i got some ideas, but even then im still gonna enjoy him while he's here,
any ways thats enough of my rambles, just felt i needed this ...for me.. I love dad, I love my family , even though theres not much comunication , but for me now , its dad,dog, budgie and tardis....
thats my family....
and thats life i guess...
and for now i apologize for my ramblin..

GOOD FOR YOU MILO. I should have been more like that years ago. However, I'm there now, and though I'm between your age and your Dads' I'm now living my life for me, and will soon be on the road almost Year round.

You're amongst friends here Jason, Your efforts to help your Dad get the most out of his remaining years are to be admired. None of us are on this planet very long and while life may not be meant to be easy it is meant to be enjoyed to the full. Keep up the good work, your Dad's reward is yours too.

What a brilliant attitude! Never lose it.
If you don't do the things which you want to do while you can, within your capabilities, you'll spend your old age regretting it and resenting all those who said you shouldn't.
You've had a couple near misses, and the advantage of having a good look at what life can do to you. Many don't get that look.
You're miles in front of many people double your age who have existed, worked, retired with nothing to look back on or forward to.
You done good so far, keep doing it.
Age is just a number. The time you spend now with your dad can't saved up for later - there is no later. The time to do it is NOW!

I love your story and your attitude to go with it, I can only hope in a similar situation that my boys would want to take me tripping around as much as you two have, I'd best go visit my sons now, might help later

well Milo every now and again I go to a happy place just so I can cope with the daily ritual stresses and strains, sometimes they work, other times it doesn't, I seem to need it more often nowadays, I get less time for people and i just got to get away and hide for a while
I always say "when life throws a bucket of poop at you then thats the time to start selling manure"
bottom line we walk this earth alone, how we cope with everyday minor catastrophes is what makes us what we are, I go fishing or travelling, getting that way I hate being home, others go shopping others yet again withdraw
just be happy in yourself and if you please someone else along the way then thats a bonus, if being with your dad and travelling is what floats your boat then more power to you, stuff the knockers

Go for it milo my dad died at 62 [i'm allready 56] my mum has been in a demintia home for over 5 years, i'm on a diss pen with leg and other problems and we love it, hubby has altered things in the van for me and if i dont feel well enough to move on we stay another 2 weeks.

Milo you've had more than a fair share of hard stuff in your life, I wish you and your lucky Dad all happiness in doing whatever takes your fancy. No one can live your life for you and you can't live theirs so listen to your own spirit and go for it.
My ex partner had a brain haemorrhage in his mid 30's ..he's fine now...but I learned just how quickly and silently life can just stop. There's no announcements ,sometimes its just like silently turning off a lightswitch. We so take it for granted that we will be here tomorrow...and so we must to keep functioning ...but we can often let years then decades just drift by. Go your hardest and be happy as you can be.
Go to the video store and get"" Zorba the Greek" out if you can find a copy. Its one of my alltime favourite movies if you overlook the very sexist views of women...it was made in the 60's after all! Zorba has a lot to say about living life. I haven't read the book, its by Katsantzakis ...Anthony Quinn was brilliant as Zorba, best role he ever played I think. Cheers Denise :)

If your dad goes away with you & didn't say a word for the whole trip, it is still quality time..
There will come a day when you will only have yourself for company - but then you will still have memories. Enjoy..

Hi Milo....you are an inspiration...I lost my husband to cancer in 07 he was 55..He also said if I make it to 50 I will be lucky...Well he got an extra 5 years but we never got to travel around in our van he got for us both...Thanks mate for your inspiration I need a bit of a nudge now and again...I am also an aged care nurse and can relate to dementia....trust me your dad has the right attitude he knows you can't take it with you and he also knows you deserve it too....What a wonderful chance has come your way.....Grab it with both hands....
