We are living in Adelaide and will be setting off on our adventure within 2 months. Where do you register your dog for people travelling with dogs on a full time basis. Do you keep them registered in your curent council area and simply renew when due ? Each council in each state has different requirements for dog rego and this then varies from stste to state. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Cheers Doug (Confused)
Hi Doug, there is a 'National Pet Register" www.petregister.com.au/ which may be what you want? If not others on the forum will correct me.

Hi jandas fun. I appreciate your reply but this does not answer the question of dog registration as required by local councils.
"The National Pet Register provides an Australia-wide pet identification and recovery service. The National Pet Register aims to reduce the number of lost and stray dogs, cats and other animals by issuing free individually numbered ID tags and recording microchip numbers on our national database."
Cheers DKay

Hi Guys,.....welcome to this very caring and helpful forum. Perhaps you've been frustrated with this question for a while?.....if its the case, it may explain your tone in reply to the help you were offered. As the reply said perhaps someone else could also help. Your response sounded to me quite repremanding for not giving you the information you wanted straight away. When people are kind enough to take time and write a response , it seems a touch offensive to recieve such a response. Call a vet is my suggestion...sorry bout the italics, don't know how to get rid of them, they just appeared. Cheers Denise

Hi Doug, I am not sure if there is any type of registration for pets that covers the whole of Australia or not, but what we do for our two dogs is have them registered at our local council and micro chipped. We have traveled from Vic to SA and QLD without any trouble.

Australasian Animal Registry is the 'official' PID provider for pet microchips in Vic and Qld, whilst NSW uses a State Government body. Other States don't have compulsory microchipping.
http://www.aar.org.au/index.html
As far as I'm aware as long as the animal is registered locally at your permanent place of residence it doesn't have to be further registered at other locations when you are travelling with it on extended holiday.
It's apparently best, though, to also have the animal registered with a national body like the one linked there or the one mentioned earlier. If it's merely local council or State registered and it gets lost elsewhere, local authorities there have nothing to check against to identify it.
That's as I understand it all, anyway, from friends who have travelled with pets.

If (your comment in italics) you inferred that I take my dogs to the vet to be put down - then Iam offended !!!!!.

Hi again Doug.
I could be quite wrong in the above advice, of course, but it sounds reasonable to me and it's definitely the way I'd approach it if I was to be taking a dog travelling with me.
When you think about it, your pet registration isn't really a 'permission to have one' kinda thing. It's more a 'safeguard' to ensure that local authorities can determine who to contact (or blame?) if the animal is found wandering, neglected, or causing problems for somebody.

Perhaps if you ask what someone means by their statement rather than guessing at the worst possible scenario you wouldn't need to get your laundry in such a twist. I simply meant that vets must encounter this issue frequently since they are usually the "chippers" and could possibly answer your question.
Why would you think I would suggest putting your animals down? That's a bit of a stretch.. and the italics thing was simply unfortunate. I still don't know what happened, it certainly didn't help and I didn't change anything afterwards despite trying,....it somehow resolved itself. If you choose not to believe me thats your business. I felt your tone was unfortunate and said so...thats all. Are we able to move on now? Cheers Denise

I have accepted Doug's apology which was sincere and heartfelt . However, I'm still waiting for an apology from my laptop for throwing in those italics at the worst possible moment. Maybe it should be named "Spawn of HAL" ..... :) Denise

Hi Denise,
I think you have my "wandering finger" syndrome. This sort of thing happens to me occasionally, and I can never figure out how. I wouldn't worry about it unles it happens too often.
Cheers,
xina.

Hi Doug.A late reply to you.I travel with our dog mainly Qld and parts of Vic.Wally is lifetime registered in NSW,micro chipped by law in this State.Whilst in Qld a ranger asked me where his council rego disc was,I explained that NSW registered dogs do not have a disc issued by councils anymore as all dogs are micro chipped.plus he wears a disc with phone numbers etc.no more questions after that.He looks a bit like a Pit Bull cross said my new found friend the ranger,no mate,Wally is actually a a Kakadu Aboriginal hunting dog,gee never come across one of those before...............Wally is in fact an English Staffie.Cheers.Ibbo.
