I had the thrill (???) of being at Adelaide airport when the two panda were unloaded today. What a disappointment.
I was really hoping to have some decent pictures to show you but all we saw was two containers wrapped in plastic with a picture of two pandas on it.
I do a bit of photography on the side and was asked to take the photos, with the permission of Singapore Airlines. So I was right there, but peeved!!
First Image is the aircraft 747-400B coming to the terminal Second image is the Welcome sign attached after the nose cone was lifted. Third image shows the conveyer bringing the two containers off Fourth image is them sitting on the tarmac.
There are other images but not worth inserting and taking up server space!

LOL Ibbo.......all I wanted was to share a bit of Bamboo. They could have had some of mine!!
Too true Smokeydk..........I wonder what the true cost has been so far. You can bet that we have paid for everything the start. From the Arteficial insemination on.......and then the rearing etc etc.
I am informed that the enclosure for them has cost over 6 million bucks.
But hey.........good news.........the price of tickets to the zoo has not gone up. You just have to book to see these cute little, sit on their backsides and do nothing but eat, overpriced, bears. Nobody will see them until about the 14th Dec. and they are now taking booking for January on.........because........and I quote "We want the public to have a good Panda experience"
I am so glad the moderators stops me saying what I really think!!

True Brickies.............................and that is probably the only redeeming factor !!
Let's hope we can recuperate some money and maybe get something out of it. I mean we are talking refrigerated imitation rocks etc etc.............so there will be HUGE ongoing expenses as well!!
I did hear a rumour that they are only here for ten years.....................?? Can't vouch for that one!!
LOL Love it Biggles!!

What a disappointment Ducky. Whoever asked you to do the gig must also be disappointed.
I probably saw more here in Cairns on the news tonight.
While they are endangered, and Adelaide is probably doing its bit to ensure the longevity of the breed, it's a shame it costs so much of the taxpayers' money.
Did they ask you if they should spend the money?
It's not really an investment. More a liability than an asset.

Yes Disco they said on the TV news they are here for 10 years , I do think Adelaide will get a lot of visitor and will visit lot at other venues and leave lots of money in your whole area . lot greener than a motor race

Aw you mean buggers! Fur coast? Really!
They eat bamboo, so I'll just wear my shirt made of bamboo fibre and you can keep your Panda fur which is really a by-product of bamboo anyway.

A shirt made of bamboo fibre around bamboo eating bears, be careful Chris, could get a bit breezy.

Hey disco,
how p*ssed off must the last boat people feel now, had to take over an Australian ship & still not land on the main land yet - should have dressed up in a panda suite & they could have landed at Adelaide airport, all expenses paid - room & board & as much bambo shoots that they could eat.

We'll have them over here in all sorts of bloody outfits. How do you tell a refugee in a koala suit, chewing a gum leaf,................. that he needs a visa??
Christmas Island would be a hoot!!
My opinion Basil is, that it doesn't matter what you cross them with..................they are still made in China. Aaaand................. I don't think that is good!! If they got sick and we had an epidemic.......would they automatically become a pandemic?? It is too much for the mind to bear!

apparently we are the only zoo in the southern hemisphere to have pandas, and one of only eight zoos worldwide to have them at all, a great achievment for us
the initial cost of $8 million will be quickly forgotten once the estimated $240 million pours in to our economy over the next ten years
I for one am lining up to see them and I hope to see a little panda soon, if that happens you wont get near thew zoo for twenty years,
ticket sales have gone through the roof with the first two months of zoo gate sales already sold out
a good thing for south australia I say, bring on more

Someone made a comment that the crowds at Adelaide zoo would include lots of Chinese tourists. That's not as funny as it sounds. In 2007 we went to view the Pandas at Ocean Park on Hong Kong Island and the numbers of locals there was amazing. Perhaps the Chinese will make up for the shortfall we are experiencing with the Japanese tourist!

I watched a little of the idiot box last night (the first in months) apparently they are lining up from all over the world to see the pandas
our enclosure, as far as being able to actually SEE the pandas, apparently is the best in the world, chinas policy is to have the pandas on exhibit but not all that accesible to the public

That's good news Dave about the enclosures. The enclosure in HK was very small and the Pandas were difficult to see as the crowds filled all the available space in front of the enclosures. Good job we were slightly taller than the average Chinese visitor. Plus I think the Pandas only came out for short spells for feeding.

apparently the keepers are in a bit of a poop fight as well, expected temps around the fortys and all the pandas exhibit is cooled even the outside rocks
when we were in honkers years ago we couldnt get near the exhibit, the little chinese were like bloody termites, worse than kids, pushing and shoving, we gave up
cant wait to get to see the little fellers even if they do have the old port colours

Can you imagine the girl on the switchboard taking the bookings...............all those different accents and all those different reasons why they should be allowed to see them this week??
"We are only in town this weeK"........................"My visa expires today"......................."We are from overseas"....................."We are from interstate"........................"My kids love Pandas"..............."
