NO Advertising of any kind...... That's what it says if you click on the 'Powered by Activeboard' link at the bottom of these GN's Forum pages. If that is actually true, then the nasty little, in your face 'Banner Ad' that has recently wormed it's way onto the top our favourite forum pages; must be some kind of 'Mal-ware' that is trying to trick those of us, that are not familiar with such miscreant 'Hijacking' tactics, to click on the wretched thing and have our identities pillaged. PLEASE, PLEASE! Avoid clicking on it, but if you have already let your curiosity get the better of you, be prudent and delete all the 'Cookies' in your Internet Explorer Options.
The nasty, devious minded plebs that create this invasive type of rubbish, should be fed to our Salt Water Crocs, who would love them to pieces for sure.

I have no problem with legitimate (paid) advertising on this site. I note that Activeboard offer two options, either advertising supported, or paid. People who have the enterprise to set up and invest in web sites, such as Grey Nomads and Activeboard, are entitled to turn a dollar the same as with traditional mass media.
Legitimate advertising identifies the advertiser and/or the product(s) and like Palebushman, as I've said elsewhere, I'm very suspicious of the banners currently appearing at the top of these pages.
Palebushman's advice above re clicking on this ad is very important, also if you've clicked on the site it would be prudent to do a full virus and spyware check with up-to-date software.

I can put up with the banners and bouncing balls, but I WILL NOT put up with an audio message of any kind.
If those continue, I will leave.
Cheers,
Peter

Seems to happen every 6 months or so.
see posts dated 14/11/2008 URGENT QUESTION TO WEBMASTER
and 12/3/2009 WEBMASTER ACTION REQUIRED.
Cindys replies are in the thread. I'm sure she is doing all she can to sort this out again.

No advertising at all comes up on mine. I run a programme called Spybot and another Mallawarebytes, they seem to bloc all that. Firefox blocks any popups for me as well.

Have to agree there. I was an IE user from day dot until there were those problems last year and I switched over and won't go back now, they have a lot more to offer, bit hard to get used to at first but brilliant once its all ironed out.

They don't want your details, they want your money to participate, and to buy a mobile phone.

Hi everyone, Apologies for the intrusive ads - especially the audio ones. I have written to the 'hosts' to request that they take the ads with sound files offline - it is very offputting I must say! The third party 'hosts' are the ones who organise the adverts and get the revenue. If we want an ad-free forum we have to pay the 'hosts' a monthly fee. Although it is a bit over our budget at the moment, we may re-consider if the annoying ads continue. I'll keep you all updated.

Thanks heaps. I knew it wasn't your site taking that on.
I don't believe it's malicious, but it's certainly a nuisance and is designed to rope people in and part with their cash.
Well done!
