I had a vehicle with personalised plates. These plates used to be the standard South Aussie colours for personalised plates. Green writing on yellow plate. I sold the vehicle and bought a Moroon coloured car. Thought it would be nice to have matching personalised plates on this vehicle so went to Motor Reg and enquired re new plates........no problems. $20 to change the plates to a new vehicle $25 to change the colour to moroon $25 for the new plates.
Yeah.........okay I want this so I have to pay.........I can live with that !
Now I want to fit a 3 bike rack on the tow bar. No probs ......I need to buy a light (because I may want to use it at night and obviously you couldn't see the existing tail lights although they are up high on the Discovery 2. I also need a number plate to hang off the end of this bike rack.
Trip to Motor Reg.
Question: Can I use one of my old yellow plates..................NO!!. "Plates may not be different colours." Question: Can I use one of my old yellow plates if I paint them moroon with white writing...................NO!!....The plate on the bike rack is smaller and must be painted white with black writing" (What happened to the same colour plates???) Couldn't answer that.
Question: Can I repaint one of my old yellow plates white and put black lettering on it.............NO !! ....That would be like defacing a coin.

I carry a pushie on the back of the van. I put a couple of reflectors on the flat end where you're supposed to place the plates. The van lights are clearly visible. I don't tow at night.
No on really gives a flying fig what the rego of your van is. It's the car (tug) they're interested in. Don't stress. As long as it's registered and displying a plate and disc it will be ok. It's the tug they're really care about, and your current driver's licence.
We've all become victims of the pubic serpent - oops, public servant.

LOL try putting a numberplate on a bike rack in NSW.....you must remove it off vehicle or CTailer...and put it on bike rack......if your carring bikes...at least here in SA.we can get bike rack numberplates.

Yes I could believe that..... Don't worry untill next month you will be safe from any more stupidity then all the beaureaucrats from all over are getting together for a big waffle fest and the Guys from the ACT have some tricks up their sleeves let me tell you.....
Only when I bought this new van in NSW did I discover how good the system was. I had to get a permit to tow the van unregistered from Richmond to Canberra.... The NSW RTA was most helpfull they issued a permit valid for 4 days from the yard to my home address. The ACT RTA were also most helpful, they refused to recognise the NSW RTA Permit ( that they did not accept) and told me I had to bring the NSW Permit into the ACT RTA and they would issue me a 4 hour permit from the ACT/NSW border to my home address. Translated this meant that they wanted me to un hitch at the border, leave the van and drive to the Dickson registry with the NSW Permit, get the ACT permit (which they would not issue unless they could sight the NSW one that they refused to recognise) then drive back to the border, hitch up and drive the last 23km home.....
I asked what would be the situation if I arrived after office hours "you would have to wait untill the next morning Sir".....
Needless to say I drove home on the NSW Permit then had to face the RTA with the paperwork for rego.....

On another issue . Went to the Dr with a finger nail infection , looks like a fungal infection said Dr Will prescribe this pill for 28 days plus a repeat if required , fine Dr and off I go
Get to Chemist, Sorry sir on the PBS these are only for issue Aboriginals and Torrens Strait Islanders but there is a second string of pills, not as effective but will do the job over time, may need a 6 month course to clear it up , will fax your Dr for new script. Wonder how many other treatments are restricted to certain groups.

Reverse discrimination? They discriminate against us much stronger than we could ever discriminate against them - out loud anyway.
If we verbally abused them on the street like they abuse us verbally and physically in public we'd get locked up for our honesty.
It would be the only crime and conviction for honesty as opposed to dishonesty being the crime.
I would have challenged that decision about your medicine right there on the spot and go info about contacing the organisation who made that ludicrous decision.
Otherwise, just soak your hands in hot water and vinegar 3 times a day. Leave to dry naturally, and if you like you can add eucalyptus or tea tree oil. I had a fungus under my nails from gardening without gloves in the Kimberleys. I fixed it.
Anyone can use this treatment - no discrimination here.

Granny, if you want absolute stupididty then the ACT is a great place to find it. On another occasion I was at the motor registry and I get served by a celonese chap with "TRAINEE" emblazoned on a badge, Ok it got difficult so he scalls his supervisor over who has a "SUPERVISOR" badge on and the trainee during the ensueing mellee refers to his supervisor as "supervisor" who duly responds to the trainee as "Trainee". Mind you Customer abuse must be the norm as they have an electric fence thingy between the customers and the staff.....

All those who work for the public service at any level of govt know full well they will survive regardless of their stupidity the operation is self funding and non accountable to the end user they spend more of the taxpayers dollars telling you how you can get a personalized number plate than they do informing the motorist of road rule changes occurring during the licence period , not bad when you have a monopoly on number plates anyway .
Our RTA have the habit of sending half the staff to lunch at the same time, which just happens to coincide with everyone's lunch hour who needs the service . 9 operational windows 4 at lunch 2 taken up with photo licences 1 for car dealers only 1 doing regos and 1 where the operator comes and goes without any apparent reason . Seeing that it doesn't open till 9.30 surely a later lunch hour is in keeping with peak loadings.

Don't be silly and logical Womat. That defeats the purpose, and then they'd have to provide customer service, face to face, where the customer can see them functioning (not working) and demonstrating their stupidity in public.
So they send the most stupid to lunch at the busiest times so the department only looks a little bit stupid, as opposed to totally stupid when everyone is at their station (not work station).
The word work does not apply in this case. I just shake my head.

Some of the things Basil,Granny and Wombat have written should be sent to the local federal members just so they get a real idea of what we think of them and how their departments go about their business. They obviously think they are doing a great job. Ignorance really is bliss??
I try do conduct as much of that "Government Business" over the internet as I can because that way I don't have to face them.

you'd be very naive indeed if you thought our local member or indeed the government was not aware of the shocking service dealt out by our departments various, it's a simple matter of you put up with it then it will continue,
write letters, send emails, let the newspapers know about it, document and divulge
let the populace know that "we are as mad as hell, and we aint gonna take it anymore"
if you have a gripe, dont whinge about it, do something about it, poor service then go to the next level in that department
i attend local council meetings, i am a member of our local neighborhood watch and I attend regular meetings with our constabulary, we make and implement various measures to improve our community, we make reccomendations to our council and local member, some of which are implemented, not all are taken up but baby steps are better than just putting up with the problem
proaction not inaction is the key here
start small but build the momentum, dont like it then do something

Hoo-bloody-ray Dave, we finally agree wholeheartedly about something. This must be a historical moment of Nomads.
I often write submissions to relevant departments about something which irks me.
Don't just write a whinge. Be objective and practical. Address it to an Advisor or personal assistant. Not the Minister directly, or if you do send it to the relative Minister also send it to the relative department heads. If it's a National issue then also send the submission to the relevant state departments. It may take a long time to see results, but at least you've done you bit to improve a bad situation which has adversely affected you.
State the issue which got your goat. Then write a suggestion to fix it.
It doesn't have to be word perfect, but a good idea is a good idea.
I recently wrote a submission to the Cairns Council requesting security measures be installed along a walkway which passes the van park. Locals tend to assemble in large numbers to socialise, trade drugs and generally make trouble.
The disturbance to the park has cost them a lot of money.
I also sent the letter to a councillor to make sure it gets raised, the Police and the public housing office.
So far I have had a letter from the Council and the department, and a personal visit from the Police Inspector and a Senior Sergeant to gain my perspective on the situation.
They now encourage me to report all problems to the Police as often as necessary to add to their statistics of trouble in this area of town.
It does pay to speak up.

I am in an very enviable position as of our last local election, my freind the ex local mayor has now become the local member so around our dinner table is a shortcut to parliament ears, our little gripes about government agencies quite often get raised in question time I am proud to say
in a strange twist of fate the gentleman who owned our first rental house is now the lord mayor so I have two sets of ears in high places who are good friends of ours and regular visitors to our humble abode
nobody listens to a grizzler but a group of genuine campaigners for better conditions is always well recieved
a visit from the inspector beats me Chris, my highest visit so far from the constabulary is from Jerry our local senior seargent, a terrific young feller with a "go get em" attitude

As a journo I got to speak to and interview quite a few politicians. Paul Keating was the last one, just before he lost the election. He was a Port Lincoln between light aircraft and small jet after adressing the ****ies out at Lock.
If ever a politician wanted to go unnoticed, Lock would be the best place to do it. The city media didn't have a snowball's hope in hell even finding the place, let alone conduct a door step interview.
My freelance camera mate and myself managed to bail him up between planes. He was polite and congenial, but not very wise. The rest as they say, is history.
I still have the 20sec interview on tape.
As long as the ears and minds are open we have a chance.

Even more beaureaucracy today. Quite a simple task, Gracie had broken her registration tag that she has to wear at all times under threat of a $500 fine and impoundment so off I trot to the shopfront to replace it....... Take a number and wait, & wait & wait..... Called to booth No 1 for drivers licences exprained to roverly rung asian girl what I wanted she for some reason insisted on taking MY photograph. Yes I protested, DOG! DOG REGISTRATION I said over and over including doing a dog impersonation woof woof..... Still had to have my photo taken.... Ok had it taken then had to fill out the form for a REPLACEMENT DRIVERS LICENCE and I refused, demanded to see a supervisor who duly turned up and he is Celonese and had the same lack of comprehension of the English language as the Asiatic girl.... Of course the entire crowded shopfront was "Urging" by this stage, talk about "who's on first base" then enter the mature woman, power dressed, sour expression, severe grey pony tail...... She had it sorted in 36 seconds @ $6.10... A cheer went up, I walked out pleased with my self control, Gracie has her "yellow" tag.... A letter to the Canberra Times has been emailed off. I have come to the conclusion it is not the Taxpayers wasting money, it is the Government and it's employees....
