Hi all, Greg & I are getting prepared for retiring in 2010 and going to take our little Foxy with us of course. We were wondering what type of restraining fence do any of you use around and under your  annexe area  - if any?
We were hoping we could get some nice sort of plastic picket fencing easy to fold or pack up in sections to put up once we setup just so our little boy could roam from van to play area, rather than have him on a leash.
He is so friendly he would be after everyone who walked past to get a pat, which might not be acceptable by all- if you know what we mean!
We do not intend to leave him in it alone, just so if we are in our relaxer chair under the annexe with him it would save us chasing after him or growling at him to stay all the time.
Would be very interested if any of you have ideas on this

we got some plastic type fencing that is about half a metre high, each panel (roughly 2 foot) is hinged, it's a little heavier than a mobile budgie cage we got it from cheap as chips years ago as plant structure (so the climbing plant can get a grip up) we bought 5 panels, works well and lightweight dont know if they still sell it but just keep an eye on those sort of stores

Thanks for that dave06, will check out Bunnings also they might have something. I asked my husband to look into making up a kit and manafacturing it- his reply was- "What Now! We're Retiring in Twelve Months!!!!!!!!!?" You know us women- my reply was, "Plenty of Time, Twelve Months- How Long Do You Want?" I also met a couple who had trained their dog not to go beyond a certain boundary, they set up a colored string line around their c/van and the dog was allowed up to it but not beyond it I cant train my doggys, somebody once told me that to train an animal then one must be smarter than the animal that is to be trained, leaves me right out I forgot to mention the "fencing" I was reffering to was a plasticised metal wire, very durable and easily taken down

Hi Dawn, Daves remark jogged my memory of a product, I haven't tried it for pets, but I did buy some plastic (not the coated wire one Dave mentions, I am not sure what that is) trellis that had little squares. It came in a roll about 1 metre high, was very light and could be rolled up when not wanted. To cover a 6ft fence, I needed to "double up" on the height by using garden twist wires to join two lengths. If you had them joined like that, you could fold over the two "panels" and then roll it up for travel. You have it cut off the roll at Bunnings for whatever length you want and being flexible you could just run it around your awning and tie it in place. Be easy to untie/unhook on one side to get out to go to the ablution block etc. Just a thought, Vic

absolutely, that stuff would work a treat, a few tent pegs would hold it in position and maybe a couple of ties around the awning stays and afterwards could easily be just "rolled up", I have seen it but didnt connect the two, little bit of "lateral thinking" needed for different needs

Hii Dawn used some plastic fencing from bunnings on our last trip with our australian terrier. Sounds like the stuff that Vic used. Could not brace the sides very well, and Max soon learned that if he he jumped or pushed on one side he could scramble over the top. Bought a 6 panel small pet run from "go Lo' for $25. 62cm high and 115cm diameter which is excellent. folds flat for storage and you can put two together for a bigger run if required. Google 'go lo' to see catalogue and location of stores. Johnw

Sam's Warehouse and Crazy Clarkes also sell those pens. I bought 3 to join up for my "kids", but found I didn't need them. The "kids" are house dogs, so whenever they have finished whatever  they need to do, and had an explore, they come straight back and want to get back in the campervan.  I gave one to my sister, but if anyone is near me, I still have 2 pens going begging. Thanks Johnw & zina for your input, I will look into those suggestions. Johnw should one not be able to weave a steel like stake through the squares of the plastic like in-out-in-out weave like and the hammer into the ground if on earth to support the sides somewhat, for that square plastic trellis material they are talking about. Thought I would make a little gate also out of it. We won't be on the road till 2010 but getting ready now, trying to dotall the "is" and cross the "ts" so to say. Cheers Dawn

Dawn. did exactly as you suggested. weaved extra large tent pegs, every 2 ft. not very succesful and was a bit of a pain altogether. It was all a bit of a rush and we didn't do a trial at home first. Maybe we could have done something better. As you have time before you go, why not try the plastic fencing first at home with metal stakes and see how it goes. Can't remember the cost at bunnings, but was a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a couple of the other pens at $25 a go. But i feel nowhere as good. Johnw

Personally I put Gracie on a chain and keep the bolt cutters out of her reach. A mate however is into gadgetry more than me and has an invisible dog fence that he uses both at home to keep his dogs and chooks seperated and while on the road to keep his dogs controled. Some of these here, not cheap but small and easily portable - as Dave says after a while the dog would know not to go to far after being "trained".... Some van parks that allow dogs will however insist that your dog is on a leash or chain at all times....

our little mates wont go too far away from dads lap, but given the right incentive (cat, rabbit, possum, fox) then there is no holding them back, we use a "sandspike" that we bought at cheap as chips, it basically "drills" itself into the ground and on that there is a lead, I dont like using the lead, hate to see my little mates tied up but when camping and someone else is around we have no alternative when there is no-one else there the little fellers are with Dad, yabbying or walking taking photo's good job you hide those boltcutters Basil or gracie would be gone like a shot

I have found that with my Staffy if I put one ofhis front legs in his collar he doesent go very far........................ok just joking.Most of the caravan parks that we have stayed in request/tell you to keep the dog on a leash.I have a spiral type peg that screws into the ground and i usually have a running lead between this and wherever is sheltered or shady.Wally sleeps in the Penguin at night and is not a moments bother.I always carry pooh bags {empty,Dave}for the usual squat always in someones view I may add,well not always.When travelling we have a station waggon with a protective barrier installed so we all travel safely.Hope I have given you some ideas.Cheers.Ibbo

Ibbo I would trade the bag in for a porta pottie, much more comfortable and you may like to rethink the " usual squat always in someones veiw" as well, EEEeeeewwww!!! Dawn there's alway's a solution, dont leave the little fellers home

I have used both long leads - they tie themselves up, including around any poles - and the light metal fencing pet panels.  They are a bit of a pain, but the most effective way.  I only trip myself up occasionally 'legging' it over the fence.  For a while the annex canvas worked along the rear of the van with the door.  But miss mischief didn't take too many trips to work that out.  Now I've cut some of the plastic wire to put there.  So far its working well.  I never go anywhere I can't take my girls...
