An unusual request! On our trip from Norseman to Kalgoorlie, there are stands of the most beautiful trees, the trunks of which look like polished wood. On closer inspection, it seems that when the old bark is stripped or falls off, the new wood underneath are the most beautiful honey colour. Please can anyone tell me the name of these trees?

I don't profess to be an expert ... but a tree that caught my eye when travelling that area, was the Salmon Gum. I have a small section of one in front of me right now. The salmon gum has an appearance similar to your description. It was widely cut as a fuel for the gold mines in their early days.
Might be a good idea to ask a local ... Take a pic on your digital camera to show them or display on this forum.

As Cupie says, it sounds like the Salmon Gum, has a smooth pink to grey coloured trunk, do you have a picture of it?
There is also a town along that road called Salmon Gums after the trees that grow in that area.
