That experience is enough to make caravan parks compulsory. What a shame!
We always have to make allowances for the fruit loops of this world.
My most negative theory about free camping is, if someone wants to remain anonymous and out of circulation they'll be free camping, and not registered in a van park.
And free camping can be so peaceful and relaxing.

We have enjoyed free camping for a couple of years now on two long trips that we have made only had one problem and that was our own fault left it too late to make camp and was only one other person at the site. You just have to be careful but we really are not that keen on caravan parks too noisy and too many people love to have a chat round a camp fire but not able to do that in caravan parks.

well we always free camp, no problems to date, I have managed quite a few c/parks and I can tell you there is more goes on in them than meets the eye as well but it is all hushed up and I am not allowed to speak about it
when was the last time you heard of a death in a large hotel/motel complex, well it happens quite often but it is shut up very quickly, bad press and all that (faulty towers comes to mind, "what body")
dont know what set this feller off but if he was in a shopping centre or a car park when he went off then a lot more would have died, also if he had got to the highway with a rifle??????
these people walk amongst us everyday, you probably passed a few on the way to work or shopping or whatever it just takes something to "set them off" and it doesnt matter where they are, just ignite the blue touch paper and stand well clear!!!! scary stuff,

All the years I have been free camping (30) and had only one little problem, in the Northern Terrorty, two Abos hassled me as soon as I popped up the top of the van, Just pulled it back down ,locked up and took off, next place there was a few vans so that was it,
I think they are few and far between,

Do the free campers just park up overnight as per "24hrs", or do you set up camp and stay for a few days, week or whatever?
For me, overnight in a park with a few other campers would be ok. I have done camping trips over a few days with friends, but that's different than taking my "home" to free camp all the time. I do have a camp stretcher/tent to set up if I do go camping with friends.
I can't leave my valuables and wordly goods at home while I go camping. I'm travellilng full time.
As I have lived in van parks for more than 10 years, I quite enjoy the atmosphere of "the high season". It goes really quiet for the rest of the year, if there aren't too many permanents.
Some of the long-termers can cause problems, but generally everyone respects each other's space and right to privacy. The rules are laid down right from the start.
A lot goes back to the quality of tenant and the management. If the tenants get out of control they're out on the road, after a warning of course. Firm but fair.
The current managers of the park I lived in at Broome are very heavy on the control factor, to save them having to work too hard. It caused quite a few problems for residents.
Poor Snowtown! They'll never recover from this one. The Iranian slasher should be deported. One strike and you're OUT! I'm sick of reading about street gangs of Asian or Middle Easterners causing big problems. They bring their crap with them.

now as for how long we stay in "camps" well it all depends, if we have some miles to do then it is overnight, if we have arrived and wish to "circle" the area then we may put down a few roots in a nice spot and spend a week or more if it is a nice convenient spot

I used to be a member of that so-called media. I don't read newspapers because of the crap reporting, the crap grammar and crap writing. Then they put an apology and correction in the next issue. By then the damage is done, and the correction means bugger all.
I'm not xenophobic, just sick of much of the trouble brought to this country by so-called refugees. They come here to be "free" and enjoy the Aussie lifestyle, but then they get into trouble carrying on their battles. Just ask the cops who the majority of offenders are.
I learned that by attending court as a journo. I base my reaction on facts, and then I get emotional. (cranky)
They almost destroyed the Curtin Air Force Base near Derby because they were demanding a luxury lifestyle at our expense, and when they couldn't get it they burnt their own accommodation to the ground. They were only supposed to be sustained in isolation while their medical history was established, and immunisations were complete. But they always demanded more.
There are good people everwhere, and thank God their the majority, but it's the minority with create the bad impression, in all walks of life, in all nationalities and ethnic groups.

Your right most of the trouble makers are home grown . The problems started when persons who we took into OZ from some crap hole of the world 30- 40 years back refused to this day to learn English. This situation then was allowed to get further out of hand when kids born here could speak another tongue better than they can English, I don't blame them for it they needed the other language so they could communicate with Mum and Dad at home .. The same goes for importing the old countries cultural differences where the boys are not allowed to associate with the girls until after marriage.
The whole set up is really stone age thinking not suitable for the OZ way of life. Worth noting OZ is the last place on earth still trying to make multiculturalism work and still has a whole govt department developing unworkable mainstream polices to accommodate and create here in OZ the homeland environment that they left behind .
It comes as no surprise that 59% of Australians have at least on parent born overseas and English is not the primary language spoken at home.
We all jump up and down when the govt hands out billions to support private schools but just look a little harder at the dollars handed out to the various schools systems we as taxpayers currently support. Many only teach English as second language as an elective subject, probably to qualify for taxpayer funding .

That gets me hopping mad is that we came from England 40 odd years ago as migrants we lived in a hostel thast comprised of nissan huts we had to go to a canteen for meals and you were served meals as if you were in the army line up sort of thing we didn'r complain was grateful to be in this wonderful country and have never looked back consider ourselves Aussie. Have worked bloody hard and never been given anything by the government brought up four kids who are all working. Yet you get these migrants come in today and want everything handed on a plate to them and then still winge. Sorry but if they do anything illegal as far as I am concerned send back where they came from. As for free camping we love it and granny as long as you are sensible it is O.K. Helena.

here in Pirie we are very multicultural, I have an elderly Greek couple living down the back left from me and a lovelier more friendly couple I couldn't wish for, we have a pair of pommys living directly behind and a swiss couple living to the right rear, we have interconnecting gateways between us all for Christ sake, we grew up in this area, well certainly in the 20 plus years that we have been here, we help each other out, I constantly repair things for them and construct anything that is needed and in return they enrich our lives no end, I must admit (and I had never thought of this before) but not one cross word has been flung from any of us
our grandkids play together, we have cups of coffee with each other and share barbies, in short we share the life we are each given and enjoy each others company
I dont understand this idea of non assimilation, we have a couple of Italians living next door and what a fantastic pair of people they are, constantly offering help and bringing over tomatoes and cucumbers, we invite our neighbors whenever we have a gathering of Friends, the food that is brought over is absolutely amazing, foodstuffs from all over the world, homemade wines and beers, chutneys and pickles and relishes, nobody goes home empty handed our barbies are amazing and extremely multicultural and I wouldn't have it any other way,
I love people from all walks of life and embrace multiculturalism in all its glory
however there are some who's sole aim is to disrupt and destroy other beliefs and those I would destroy in the blink of an eye if I was god

Dave, i agree with your comments 100%. i can quickly count over 6 different nationalities in my heritage since 1792.(maybe more, never worried about it) My best friends were not born in this country and my g/daughter is of Maori descent. But if one of my chickens bites me, i will cull it.

Yet we pander to their every need and whim we set up ghettos so that they can all livetogether by forcing others out of their homes and still they whinge. I'm with Pauline on this issue, cut them no slack, don't pay them welfare unless they become citizens, don't let them have Aussie Priveliges untill the become citizens and stuff this english as a second language, lets all speak english or an indigneous dialect of your tribe but not French, german, mandarin, yiddish or Farsi etc.....

The spud farm I grew up on in the Adelaide Hills employed migrants in the 50's to pick up spuds.
We'd pick them up from the Woodside Army Camp and they'd all hop into the back of the ute, work themselves silly, laughing most of the time, and we'd take them home again at the end of the day. I used to sit in the back with them. They were loving, happy people. They respected the country which adopted them and worked really hard to learn English and assimilate. Thanks to them we have open minds and a variety of menus.
They were of German, Polish, Croat or similar nationality. They worked their way in and up.
The more recent generation of refugees and immigrants seem to only come here to inflict their way of life and "religion" on us. Assimilation is the last thing on their mind.
The Italians on the Adelaide plains grew acres of vegetables, and the Greeks went fishing or ran businesses. No Underbelly in Adelaide, much. Of course the underworld snuck in, but they didn't dominate our lives as much as bombings, suicidal murderers and radical gangs.
The kids are taught this way of life from infancy, and they don't know anything else, and it seems nothing is going to change their ways in our free country. Their sole purpose is to convert people to their ways, and when they resist, boom!
We are really blessed to be living in such a free country. We don't even have to have visas to cross borders. No strip searches, only fruit searches.
Lets be grateful for the wonderful, diverse country we live in, and do all we can to keep it that way. Speech is still free, as far as I know. So speak up. If it bugs you, say so.

the swiss couple, andrika and willem are just fantastic, what a marvelous race the swiss are
we adore our ethnic neighbors and before you ask you cant have them, we are invited to all there functions, weddings, christenings and funerals, in short we are family
I ask just one thing if a person or persons are thinking of entering our fantastic country, please make two pledges,
(1) promise to try and learn to speak english
(2) please assimilate and leave the troubles at the door
we also have a group of muslems that we welcomed into Pirie, with all that they have been through and all the memories, they are trying very hard to become aussys, I am proud to be a part of that trial

Yep good and bad in allraces I have two Philippino daughter in laws and I couldn't wish for better they are family orientated and nothing is too much trouble for them they have both taken australian cits and love life over here have taught us so many things as we have them

when I posted the article I was not aware that the fellow was of any particular ethnicitiy, he was just another joker who went wierd and placed another obstacle in the paths of nomads, grey or not grey
we are up against this sort of thing all the time, somebody somewhere starts a "free" camp out of the goodness of thier hearts, be it council or private, and then along come the idiots of this world and stuff it up for all of us, it is hard enough for us to find these places nowadays with vested interests (such as c/park owners, who place themselves on council boards )placing obstacles in our way
whenever we free camp I always leave the site a little better than when we arrived, if I see a bit of rubbish then I pick it up, no bins then I carry it in the camper until we get to a bin, just little things I know but I do know it is apreciated by the next camper and by the local councils
all this can be undone by just one thoughtless idiot who comes in on a long weekend or whatever and destroys the place and leaves nothing but destruction and rubbish everywhere
