Thank you Sheba. Before I saw your last clue, I was thinking Britt Ekland !! Try this one.
That's the one Sheba. Chances Are and Wild is the Wind were two of his biggest hits, which I thought were good clues.
John Royce Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is an American singer of popular music. Starting his career with singles of standard music, he became highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status and 73 making the Billboard charts. According to Guinness Music writer and charts historian Paul Gambaccini, Mathis has sold over 400 million records worldwide to date, making him the third-biggest selling artist of the 20th century after Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Mathis has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for three recordings.
Can't believe there hasn't even been one guess. This guy is world-famous, and his home country is closer to Australia than America.

Thank you Ted. I thought that was going to drag on for at least a week. Indeed it is Gandhi, and both his Hair, and clothing are totally different in his later years.
Born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujarat, Gandhi trained in the law at the Inner Temple, London, and was called to the bar at age 22 in June 1891. After two uncertain years in India, where he was unable to start a successful law practice, he moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit. He went on to live in South Africa for 21 years. It was here that Gandhi raised a family and first employed nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights. In 1915, aged 45, he returned to India and soon set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination.

I thought that there had been an earlier posting with Gandhi. At that time, while I browsed some of his photos, I had noticed his more youthful hairdo, hence he was easy to pick.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ndi, ændi/;[3] GAHN-dee; 2 October 1869 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer,[4] anti-colonial nationalist[5] and political ethicist[6] who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule,[7] and to later inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
