If you're right Jonothan, it's the Prince Regent River, WA. An American girl, Ginger Fay was taken there in 1987.

If it's not that, would it be one of the gorges in the Karrigini National Park in the Pilbara of WA?

Indeed, its Circular Pool in Dales Gorge in Karajini NP. Absolutely stunning place, on the plains above its dry, dusty and red, at the bottom of the gorge its lush and green.

Not many takers - a clue? It's actually a disused gold mine!

Nobody else is having a go, so I'll keep trying... havent been there but was reading about old abandoned mining sites and ghost towns. There was apparently a mine at Barrossa, but the country doesnt look right, how about Echunga?
thommo said

No Gert, it's in WA.
The gold mine is now disused, however the town about 7 klm away is still alive ang kicking, and by no means a ghost town!

Carnarvon was mentioned and when answering that post, I somehow deleted it! OK, sorry if I have given some misleading info. It certainly is in WA and I'm afraid it's waaay north of Ora Banda and Leinster. Hope that clears it all up and that i'm back in the good books!

Thanks for that. It seems a little tough, so as another bit of a clue - the photo was taken from a souvenir tourist information shop on site. The mine was closed in the 50's and is not accessable to the public

JRH. That's the one. The Comet Mine, just out of Marble bar. A bit of info included.
Comet Gold Mine and Tourist Centre
Visit the Comet Gold Mine and Tourist Centre near Marble Bar to view a wide range of gemstones, rocks and minerals. Check out the range of interesting and informative displays to learn about the history of the gold mine and the town of Marble Bar.
See the huge 75 metre high smoke stack, which is the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere. The old mine was founded in 1936 and is no longer operating, though you can still get an insight into how the local sulphide gold ore was mined using cyanide, arsenic and nitric acid, the containers can still be seen.
The tourist centre has a range of information about the local area. If you are after a unique souvenir, you may be impressed by the range of quality gemstones and natural gold nugget jewellery items for sale.
Comet Gold Mine is seven and a half kilometres from Marble Bar, which is a three hour drive south of Port Hedland.
