no I don't see that.. choosing to live in a caravan, and being forced to live in a caravan.... maybe two different things, but when a person moves into and uses a caravan as a home, whether on the road, or in a caravan park ( on a temporary basis) qualifies them for being a "nomad" ,,, doesn't matter who you are -- ... I'm not "forced" to live in a van ... I 'CHOOSE' to travel in a motorhome. And I consider myself a Grey Nomad... now if I were a divorced/dispossessed man living in a caravan I'd still consider myself to be a grey nomad -- its wrong to suggest that because we choose the nomadic lifestyle, we are any more entitled to use the term "Grey Nomad" .

Alan, I completely sympathise with you and all those you are an advocate for and I hope your crusade meets with success for those in the situations you are highlighting.
However, the statement/s above (my bolding) fly in the face of the actual meanings -
nomad n. 1. A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land. 2. A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.
grey nomad n Australia - any elderly retired person who spends time travelling around the country in a mobile home

Just a fine point.. I am not one of the displaced man to which I refer - Im happily single,. never married ( why would I?) and I dont describe myself as an "advocate" for these guys, (as they've never asked me to be one) ... However I just believe they are part of our community who deserve some support ...

Is there any problem with what newslug is suggesting? Simply, that we look out for one another and in a practical way.
It is ok, laudable, that individuals take the initiative to look out for others. It is a civic duty, or it once used to be. Being proactive is a good thing. Why wait for someone to be exhibiting obvious signs of distress before extending courtesy? To challenge the, 'I'm all right Jack, pull up the ladder' attitude that seems to be more common and should not be.

Truly appreciate your comments .. and yes - while im not an advocate for men -- I have had some advocacy experience - regarding prostate cancer - and the appalling funding arrangements for prostate cancer research, compared with funding for breast cancer ,,, it just seems men are considered to be disposable and of little worth, in some quarters --- given that more men die from prostate cancer each year ( in Australia alone, average of 3000) far more than women dying as a result of breast cancer, it all seems just a bit "one sided" ....but THIS is not a new thread for this discussion group ... I was just 'saying" ...

Prostate exams/cancer. For some weeks, gone now, there were some small leaflets in public toilets in a privately owned shopping centre near to where I have been staying. It was a good initiative. You regularly hear of men who have left action too late, so some cancers are aggressive.

John .. yes.. I' ve been through that mill, thanks to a good GP who suggested I undergo the test. ( PSA ) and on going tests .... and the oncology ward at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital ... I have been ( touch wood) free of this cancer for nearly 5 years .. I have to have another psa test in july this year, and if thats all good, no more appointments to see doctors for 3 years.! Yaaay... I dont know why guys dont get themselves tested though some comments back to me from some men makes me wonder if they're worth saving!~ Silly comments -- they think Im questioing their sexuality, and that prostate cancer is some kind of "gay" disease ...I shake my head in amazement that some people can be so bloody stupid .
as for the leaflets ?? they were probably left by the local branch of the prostate cancer support group --- but removed by management who had the same common sense as the men I referred to above... It happens, sadly....
It is disappointing if the small informative cards I saw in the 'men's' at the shopping centre are not there now because of some bureaucrat/complaint. I noted that the cards were being taken and read because restocking seemed to be a regular event and none were seen in the open refuse bin.

I joined the prostate cancer support group in Maroochydore it is meant for affected men and their partners regardless of sexuality . and whats said at the group meetings STAYS at the group meetings ... they were getting crowds of a hundred or more, in Maroochydore ... so larger centres should be getting big crowds as well ,.,'
Its actually destablished under the support of the Queensland Cancer Council but don't tell the feminists, or they'll have it shut down'.... they want all the cancer research money spent only on cancers that women suffer. Shhh!

I've given up on the "mens shed" thing ,.. the three I've tried have been invaded by wives ! this seems to happen to anything that is for men ... from the apex lions and rotary clubs of years gone by . to the men's bars in hotels. and of course, mens sheds .... I get really annoyed when Im told Im not allowed into the women's only spaces, such as gyms ...try starting up a men only gym you'd be in strife immediately .... yet THEY say WE are biased ?? wtf??

I agree with the thread continuing.
I can understand and see the point of the thread. No difference to a thread say on prostrate or any other cancer or depression or even the latest cold threat, cooking or knitting. Are they also to be forbidden.
Perhaps also we look at the hobby thread and the general discussion group etc.
Time to settle down and if the thread title does not grab your fancy or after a short read you dont like it or agree then dont open it again and let the thread continue for those that are interested.
For me been there done it about 35 years ago.
I Just continue on.
Have no contact with any of the family members but have been told they are furious that I am wasting their inheritance LOL.
I was the Dad and often the mum but my wife decided / insisted that any kid talking to me could not talk to her or any of the others, so it tore my kids apart as well as the resulting grandkids.
I left the area and moved interstate with the hope of me moving away they would get back together
None talk to each other as far as I know.
Could not even get them to have a meal in a pub together when I went back just after I retired in 2009
I have accepted to never see any of them again and have got on with spending their inheritance.
We are all different and we handle it in different ways, and I dont believe these so called charities making money from peoples problems are the answer either.
