Have now reverted to Windows, bliss, loads each and every time and does exactly what I need it to do.
Guess I tried, seems open source software ain't really that open.

I really can't understand what you mean, Cinnamon loads when you load mint, as it's a GUI. The only time you would load cinnamon, would be if you were running another Mint GUI, like Mate, KDE, XFCE, or another flavour. You can only use a open source system, by downloading and burning the stable ISO file from the mint download site and that would be the 32 bit mint 16 petra and then starting your computer with it.
if you have been able to get that far with your computer, I'm sure you can tell Wombat how you were able to get it started and you would have been able to easily use mint. So what screen did you see when you put in the dvd and what option did you take, so you could make a decision on it. if you tell me, I can help you, if that's your intent.

Thanks for the offer NP, while I thought it would be nice to have a look at Linux so I could at least experience what was being discussed, I just cant be bothered with all of the stuffing around, computers are a tool as far as I'm concerned, not a toy, have drawn a double line under the exercise, enough drama in my life without adding to it, as I said will stick with Windows, does what I want without drama and has done for the past 15 years.

As far as I can see from the above results is..."better the devil you know than the one you don't"....have been using Windows since '94, don't particularly like it but there you go. It's easy to blame when something you load don't work.

Hi NP, still no go, Grrrrr, on startup I get 'F10 Rom base set up' keep pressing F10 and WinXP starts its loading.
Hit F2 or delete and there is no list just WinXP loads as normal
I attach some pics to give you more info.
I did try insert DVD and restarting but still loads Win XP, somehow I need to get the comp to see the DVD first, Grrrrrr
OK, are you holding the f10 key down, as that will only start windows. You may have to press it a couple of times to get it to work. Sadly that's the nature of windows, they do everything in their power to control your system and stop you doing anything with it, but what they want. That looks fine to me, as you burnt the disc everything seems to be there.

Now we demand they remove windows and reduce the price accordingly, most make up every excuse possible, so we walk out and they lose out. Now we always buy on line, save a fortune and get out computers bare which makes it's simple task to load any form of system we feel like. That's why people never try anything else, as soon as they do, this is what happens, windows hogs the computer and you have to fool it into starting on a non Microsoft dvd. It all depends on how important it is to experience where th state of the art is, otherwise yo stay with what you know and put up with the negat v economics and frustrationg at having to constantly work on your system to keep it functioning and safe.
Most people just want to be able to do what they want, so aren't interested in keeping up to date or at the cutting edge of the technology. To me that's fine, it does make me laugh when people put down what they have no idea of. If windows provided us with the systems we need at a reasonable price, that would be fine. Try hitting F2 or delete. When your computer starts, it should show a list of keys to press to access certain area's. On some computers it happens so fast you can miss it and even if you see the key, there's not enough time to hit it. If this happens, as soon as you see the bios message, hit pause break, this will freeze the screen and you can see the key you have to hit to get into bios.

No worries, change your boot options, from notebook hard drive, to notebook multibay. If you have the option, make sure you save the changes. If it still doesn't work, tell me the make and model of your computer. That way I can go through my windows resources and find the right method to fix it that way. But i reckon changing the hard drive to second and multibay to first, will start the dvd. had to do that with a compaq presario laptop which is now 13 years old and constantly crashed on windows as it aged. It's still going, running linux puppy as it's ram is 250meg and 10g hard drive. We use it on the boat and will soon set it up to monitor our property electric systems.

Firstly let me say you have more patience than me Wombat but then I know the end result when you do eventually get it all loaded and up and running..
You will get frustrated with all the rubbish you have to sort through to do anything on it like find a driver for your camera and when you go looking there is 3 pages of drivers that are supposed to work but none of them are the one you want or becoz there are sooo many on offer you cant work out which one is the right one...
I recently threw out about a dozen old puters and one of them had Linux 10.5 Ubuntu on it but after about 3 weeks on and off of trying to follow it I gave up and put it in the too hard basket..
Like other have said why change something that is working good and I am very happy with the machines I have with XP or W7 on..

I may have forgotten to tell you, when you change the boot setting to multibay, you push the F12 key to save and change it. Went into my old presario and found it has a different set up interface. Checked a forum and the reply was, ouch it may not be possible for you to do anything, not even upgrade windows.
Anyway, you're learning a bit more about your computer and it's limitations. I believe when we stop learning and changing, we begin are really just hanging round to die. Not into that cop out at all, life's for living and learning.

I sent Barina a disc to totally clean her HDD on that Dell she was having trouble with and she now tells me it fixed it for her and she has XP up and running on it now..
When I was playing with Linux I must admit I did start with a clean slate and it made loading it much easier..

WE are all not at your level and from personal experience malware does take some time and knowledge to repair. It is always fixable but occasionally you need help.
Am I missing something or was not the original poster seeking help in a Windows environment? and help was forthcoming by many other members.
Please take into consideration that us as mere mortals have other interests than Computer Operating Systems and at times just need simple assistance.

You have no idea what you're talking about in any way. I used Ubuntu10.2 for a number of years, never had to look for a driver and theres nothing you have said which is true of open source today. You wanna live in the last century, then I'm happy for you but don't spread rubbish. There''s an old psychological saying which rings true all the time, if you tell the truth, you can't be caught out.
Wombat like myself and humans who enjoy the challenges of life, is checking something different and interesting out. Had my first computer in 1979, checked out linux first last century, couldn't work it out at all, so set it aside and kept my eye on it. Had a go at Red hat and early Debian, but beyond me. When Ubuntu came out, tried that and mucked round with it on a dual boot, but stuck to windows for business and pleasure. Then Ubuntu reached 9.2 the entire community came on board and from that point, hundreds of flavours of Linux have evolved to be the state of the art exceptionally easy to use computing systems.
This thread started because someone had a problem with a virus and wanted some help to fix it. My original reply was to give alternative help which not only got rid of it, but would have stopped it happening again and introduced them to the real world of computing. If they wanted a change, they would have said so. Others with more knowledge of Win after XP, solved it. I have no knowledge of anything microsoft since vista, other than to have tried win 7 and 8 on new computers before deleting them for others.
It then developed, between Wombat and myself. Wombat may not get it to work on his old compaq as they are all different and have different chips sets and speeds. It took me a quiet awhile to get a linux system on my compaq notebook, it has so little resources, decided to put another linux flavour called puppy on it and it's brilliant. Puppy runs fully in RAM, the entire operating system fits into between 100meg and 250meg and its fully operational and one of the best distro's there is.
Lots of people are happy with windows, it servers their purpose and they are familiar with it. The majority only want to do simple things and surf the net, so they can get free simple programs to do their photo, video and graphics etc and are happy. If they want to go further and do professional looking stuff, they will need to spend money, as proprietary free software, is extremely limited. This is where open source and linux comes in, when Wombat sees the mint desktop and clicks on the menu, he will have at his finger tips state of the art constantly evolving free software to do just about anything he wants. If he wanted to do a movie like lord of the Rings, or the animated cartoons you see on tv, that's only possible on a linux platform. So he would download a dedicated multimedia flavour of linux, which would be set up with all the required codes, and most of the applications necessary to do that. By going to synaptic package manager, he will be confronted by thousands and thousand of software packages which can be installed automatically and able to do anything he wants graphically. If you want to just browse and do simple things, it's all there, with choice of browsers and dedicated open source browsers and software which protect you and never collect any information about you. As it is installed it finds all your peripherals and sets up the drivers, no discs to insert, no pages to go through, all automatic. if it doesn't have a driver for something you have attached, it goes and finds it or a compatible one for you. It's a learning curve as it's not windows or apple, but is so worth the little effort needed.
Because it a constantly evolving platform, updates come daily and new versions just about every 6 months, if you want. I know people who are still using Mint 10 and early versions of Ubuntu and others, they are happy with what they have. For Wombat, the problems he is facing has nothing to do with linux mint, or open source. He may not like it, the computer may not load it, many things may happen, but as it is installing, it will take him through a tutorial and explain lots of things making it easy to get going straight away.
It's much better to sit back and see how things develop, before making ridiculous claims. You never know you may get a laugh out of it, or learn something.

I PM'd the web Mistress last year about a separate computer forum but no reply. I am interested in some forms of computing (photo shopping for 1) but not others. You started in putters after me Native Pepper. Mate (a GN member) and I built our first computer from a circuit in Electronics Australia magazine in 1975 from discrete components. Soldered our own Mother Board and video card etc., and saved our machine language to tape, no HDD's or floppies then that we could afford. Our flatmate complained because she could not walk bare foot in our lounge room because cut-offs from resistors and caps stuck in her feet. Lots have changed since then I know, but, some times its difficult for people not versed in computers to follow a completely different OP system than they are used to, I know I do.

G'day Peter, when said I got my first computer in 79, that was a microbee, before that along with a programmer, we made our own systems from scratch and used tapes. Back then we got hold of a weather satellite program and attachment from ANU where he was a lecturer, to downloaded current synoptic charts from the satellite. It was a big deal for us and we printed them out on thermal paper to show others. Even undertook a computer technology and programming uni course, but have a complete block when it comes to mathematics so couldn't get past that bit so gave it away. Have concentrated on understanding systems and how they operate over the years, leaving programming to others. When using win, used to fix lots of people computer systems for them and now help those getting into open source pc's and a couple of forums with simple non jargon explanations.
The open source distro's I recommend to others are those that are simple to operate, very forgiving and do what they want, not what the corporate world wants. My comments are for those who wish to make changes, not to those happy with their computing situation. I understand the fear people have of change and difference, put up with it all my life and just laugh at their illusionary fear. But don't laugh at those happy with their lot.
The best thing on the planet for photo shopping, is the GIMP, add blender, Inkspot and a couple of others, then you have the state of the art photo manipulation and animation system on the planet.
Wombat, if you can't get mint onto your Compaq, why don't you check it out in you win 7 computer. It's what's called a live disc, that means you can put it in start your computer and the system will run from the disc and not put anything into your system. This gives you the ability to see how it operates and what it has to offer. When it loads, it will give you the option of installing, launching a tutorial or just having a look and seeing what it can do. If you decided to install it along side win, it will give you a number of the options to take, if you choose set up along side win, it will do that fully automatically all you do is follow the recommended configurations. Much better to have a look and play with it for awhile as a live disc until you decide what you're gonna do.
The majority of open source, can be installed in a usb stick. That way where ever you are, you just stick it in a computer choose the boot sequence and bingo your on. When you finish you shut it down and take out the usb and that's it. it isn't that easy to do if you're not familiar with open source, but for you, just stick the disc in the computer start it and have a look, it can't hurt anything as nothing loads into your computer.

its a Compaq Presario 2800 running Win XP.
Firstly let me say you have more patience than me Wombat but then I know the end result when you do eventually get it all loaded and up and running..
You will get frustrated with all the rubbish you have to sort through to do anything on it like find a driver for your camera and when you go looking there is 3 pages of drivers that are supposed to work but none of them are the one you want or becoz there are sooo many on offer you cant work out which one is the right one...
I recently threw out about a dozen old puters and one of them had Linux 10.5 Ubuntu on it but after about 3 weeks on and off of trying to follow it I gave up and put it in the too hard basket..
Like other have said why change something that is working good and I am very happy with the machines I have with XP or W7 on..
I like a challenge, I'm only trying this on an old machine that sits there looking at me all day long.
I may have forgotten to tell you, when you change the boot setting to multibay, you push the F12 key to save and change it. Went into my old presario and found it has a different set up interface. Checked a forum and the reply was, ouch it may not be possible for you to do anything, not even upgrade windows.
Anyway, you're learning a bit more about your computer and it's limitations. I believe when we stop learning and changing, we begin are really just hanging round to die. Not into that cop out at all, life's for living and learning.
I sent Barina a disc to totally clean her HDD on that Dell she was having trouble with and she now tells me it fixed it for her and she has XP up and running on it now..
When I was playing with Linux I must admit I did start with a clean slate and it made loading it much easier..
If you would like a copy I would only be too happy to send you one.. I just need you to PM me your postal addy..
Your experience and advice is excellent.
BUT
WE are all not at your level and from personal experience malware does take some time and knowledge to repair. It is always fixable but occasionally you need help.
Am I missing something or was not the original poster seeking help in a Windows environment? and help was forthcoming by many other members.
Please take into consideration that us as mere mortals have other interests than Computer Operating Systems and at times just need simple assistance.

it was my fault for following up on OS I should have started another topic.
BUT the original question was answered to the satisfaction of the original poster, some of us are not mere mortals and but still require that little bit more from guys that know more than we do.
bob would that disk erase my WinXP?
I was looking for something that would allow me to run another OS and leave XP intacked, and it looked like that may have been the case with the DVD option.

It will mate it totally cleans the HDD and just put a new msdos on.
But for no extra cost I can include a copy of XP home for you..
It is as legal as the day is long so long as he has his Key that is stuck on the bottom of his puter..

G'day Peter, when said I got my first computer in 79, that was a microbee, before that along with a programmer, we made our own systems from scratch and used tapes. Back then we got hold of a weather satellite program and attachment from ANU where he was a lecturer, to downloaded current synoptic charts from the satellite. It was a big deal for us and we printed them out on thermal paper to show others. Even undertook a computer technology and programming uni course, but have a complete block when it comes to mathematics so couldn't get past that bit so gave it away. Have concentrated on understanding systems and how they operate over the years, leaving programming to others. When using win, used to fix lots of people computer systems for them and now help those getting into open source pc's and a couple of forums with simple non jargon explanations.
The open source distro's I recommend to others are those that are simple to operate, very forgiving and do what they want, not what the corporate world wants. My comments are for those who wish to make changes, not to those happy with their computing situation. I understand the fear people have of change and difference, put up with it all my life and just laugh at their illusionary fear. But don't laugh at those happy with their lot.
The best thing on the planet for photo shopping, is the GIMP, add blender, Inkspot and a couple of others, then you have the state of the art photo manipulation and animation system on the planet.
Wombat, if you can't get mint onto your Compaq, why don't you check it out in you win 7 computer. It's what's called a live disc, that means you can put it in start your computer and the system will run from the disc and not put anything into your system. This gives you the ability to see how it operates and what it has to offer. When it loads, it will give you the option of installing, launching a tutorial or just having a look and seeing what it can do. If you decided to install it along side win, it will give you a number of the options to take, if you choose set up along side win, it will do that fully automatically all you do is follow the recommended configurations. Much better to have a look and play with it for awhile as a live disc until you decide what you're gonna do.
The majority of open source, can be installed in a usb stick. That way where ever you are, you just stick it in a computer choose the boot sequence and bingo your on. When you finish you shut it down and take out the usb and that's it. it isn't that easy to do if you're not familiar with open source, but for you, just stick the disc in the computer start it and have a look, it can't hurt anything as nothing loads into your computer.

NP, If I send Wombat a CD with Ubuntu 10.5 on it will that update to the latest version or wont it be any good to him.?????
Edit...Forget that idea I just had a look and I have thrown out all of the Ubuntu discs..
