The ABC, especially ABC radio, devotes airtime to issues that are largely ignored by other media: religion, feminism, Indigenous issues, Muslim and other minorities' interests. In doing so it paints a picture of an Australia that is at odds with some people's beliefs about Australia, for whom Australia is white, European, Christian and male. In their minds this is bias, but is it bias or a reflection of the modern reality of Australia, warts as well as winsome looks, something often at odds with entertainment and profitability?
There are other non-exclusive cohorts who perceive bias, too: first the politicians and other community and business leaders who want to control messages about themselves and their doings, those believe that who pays the piper picks the tunes.
And then there are those, more broadly distributed in the community, who feel that the media should be the opiate of the people, now that religion is in serious decline. Hence the popularity of "reality" programs where tragedy is a fallen souffle or unplumbed plumbing.
When media content is driven only by entertainment values and profitability, not to mention the influence of large advertisers, alternative views are not encouraged.
Public service broadcasting, ABC and SBS, is vital to providing alternative ideas and understandings. Without alternative ideas or political parties we don't have democracy.

Sorry Dorian but the author of your posted article is clearly biased.
Do you think he would get any more engagements from ABC if he said they were biased?
Maybe I should find a post by a Sky News commentator saying Sky News is not biased. Probably hard to find. ABC is the only media organisation that is required to be non biased but from what I see, it is the only media organisation that maintains that it is not. ALL media is biased.

We need a news service. One that reports the news and events. No opinions. No matter who they are. Its whole purpose should be to provide true information. Maybe the govt could test their new information/misinformation bill on the ABC first. They should remember they are there to inform not entertain.

The author of that piece is right on the money. It's almost as if he wrote it with GN foremost in his mind. For the majority of the ABC's detractors in this place, "Australia is white, European, Christian and male". I would refine it a little more and add that they are conservative and predominantly Anglo-Saxon.

I typed the following into Google's search engine:
Figure 3 on page 13 shows that ABC TV, ABC Radio and SBS are at the top of the trust ratings, while Sky, Daily Telegraph and news.com.au are well below.
Australian public service media such as the ABC and SBS saw strong support from Australians this year. Up to 60 per cent regarded it as important to society, and for more than half of the respondents it was important to them, personally.
The ABC and the SBS continue to be the most trusted news brands in the survey.
"The trust in public service media is reflective of the commercial and political independence of these channels. People who are concerned about misinformation are also much more likely to think publicly funded media is important," said Dr Park.
The top trust factors were 'high journalistic standards' (81%) and 'transparency' (80%). Public broadcasters such as ABC and SBS are the most trusted sources of news surveyed, along with regional and local newspapers.
There are relatively high levels of trust in well-established news brands, particularly the ABC and SBS, whose content is freely available to all Australian news consumers.

Cobber, I just picked the first search results in order. No cherry-picking. You can pick the next dozen or so. I'm sure you'll find the same.

Kim Williams.
The chair of the ABC is on the National Press Club address today.
I will watch that during lunch.
It will be interesting if there are any pressing questions from the press gallery re Bias etc.
Then following is Media Watch with a segment on "ABC Radio upheaval" advertised???
I reckon they should appoint Helen Tudor-Fisk as chairperson of the ABC.
She seems to be the only one with any degree of commonsense in the ABC, and she is a comedian......
