We have 1 case in Vic today and 4 in NSW. Yet they are still going hard with restrictions. We have proven that 0 cases forever isn't possible. So do we lock down every time one case appears? The UK is on it's 3rd lock down so don't tell me lock downs are 100% guaranteed. NZ is still getting daily cases. They also had hard lock down.
I'm OK will hot spot lock downs. But locking down a who;e state/s?

What you appear to miss BGT is the reason numbers are low at the moment is because of lockdowns, It has been shown stopping people moving stops the virus spreading it also stands to reason the larger distances you allow people to move and the more people you allow to travel the more extreme the risk and School holiday times would have to be the most dangerous times of all with hole families jumping about all over the country. Lockdowns have done a marvelous job in Victoria cutting numbers from 700 a day and out of control to no new cases a day in 60 days or so, this Victory came at a great price to the people of Victoria and it has just been compromised probably by 1 traveler who didn't know what they were carrying. You mention the Uk being on its third lock down so not to tell you lock downs are 100% guaranteed I don't recall anybody on this thread offering Guarantees like that but I may have missed that post, but I will snuggest that the UK resists lock down far to long before acting and opens up too early. until this vaccine gets rolled out ( which may not work) restricting travel is the best weapon we have. I am truly sorry for your current situation and hope you get to your destination soon, like you I look forward to times when we no longer need closed borders but peoples safety and keeping industry going needs to be put before our personal inconvenience. nsw wales has just had a case of one young fellow moving while unknowingly being infected traveled from hotspot in sydney as far as broken hill on a camping trip. causing a lot of people to be concerned .
now think of all the people going to the cricket
just spoke to some one in the southwest of the UK they are doing it tuff in lockdown not even allowed out to go shopping everything has to be delivered , waiting time for deliveries is blowing out to weeks .registered venerable people living off basic care packages left at door. hospitals spilling out into the streets
again are you not glad we are in AUST with our minimal disruption/restrictions compared to other countries

Despite some claims to the contrary lockdowns don't work!! No mention of NZ's lockdown and they are still getting as many cases a day as Australia is. Selective arguments? The UK is a mess after 3 attempts at lockdown. The USA is a mess with no lockdowns. To compare Australia to other countries is a wasted argument. There are so many variable that anyone can argue what ever they want and point to an example.
Australia needs consistency. Like Vic officials say you can't stop if you are driving through NSW from Qld to Vic. Well hello. Has anyone in Vic looked at a map? Oh I forgot. Gov officials always fly. So where's the road safety message? Qld is taking flights from NZ. No quarantine. The Indian cricket team has to quarantine if they want to play in QLD. But it was ok for the ALF to bring the grand final to QLD. The next test you have to wear a mask. But not if you are at a Big Bash game. I could go on. But my point is that they are making up the rules as they go. No wonder folks are confused. Vic has 0 cases today so what will change? Nothing. They'll just make something else up.
Give us a set of rules we can follow and stick to them. We may not like the rules but at least we can plan. I feel for all those Victorians who are locked out of their own state. The media is full of examples. Where's the common sense? And it wont work anyway because each state wants to show they are in control. They wont accept a federal consensus. The national cabinet showed state leaders would agree to anything then say something else as soon as they got home. Hell they can't even agree on what a hot spot is. It's a mess and Australians are fed up. Me included.
The problem with this forum is that many here are comfortable with their own situation and aren't prepared to look at the big picture. There are way too many "I'm all right mate" and bugger the rest of you.
Time to look after the 99% of Australians who are having their lives wrecked. Look at the figures and put everything in perspective. But I know many won't they will argue regardless of the facts.
I said some time back I wouldn't bang on about covid. Now I'm promising this is my last post on the subject.

99 % of australians having their lives wrecked ??? can't be to bad share market going bonkers, property market going bonkers, try buying a new car or caravan, the waiting list is growing by the day. some people are doing it tuff but if the situation here, was like overseas there would be a lot more people a lot more worse off.
UK should have kept themselves in lock down a bit longer opened up a bit slower but hard to do in a country that has a reasonably dense population with not very definable borders between counties in aust we can close a dozen roads an isolate a state are we not lucky
look at what is happening in the USA .how that pans out remains to be seen, are the people in power letting the people at the white house "the protesters" burn themselves out then just clear them out later or are the people in power part of "the protest" as that is one of the most secure places in the world an "the protesters" just walked in, that can't help the covid situation
i wonder why so many on here seem to be comfortable with their own situation.
unfortunately all the people will not be happy all the time

Stating the obvious, we need a stronger enforcement system to ensure that when a person is told to quarantine themselves (and/of family) that they do, in fact isolate themselves from the rest of society for the prescribed period. Now, thinking realistically, who would enforce such isolation?
The Police are the logical ones, but they cannot adequately control the crime waves. drugs on the street etc etc, so how can then additionally enforce crazy persons who think that they know better? If a person waked down the street with a shotgun, firing randomly at people, they would soon be brought down, but Covid's shotgun is invisible. The only way to limit (sadly, not eradicate) the virus is to lock down and do what the authorities are currently trying to do, namely trace all contacts. Anyone in the streets has to have a good reason to be there, and if they don't impose a HEAVY FINE. $2000 is not enough to offset the enormous costs involved in tracing and containing the virus, but if fines of that order were imposed AND ACTUALLY RECOUPED FROM THE OFFENDERS, that may make others think twice about ducking out to the supermarket to but a slab of beer because they were getting low.
In China, Japan and a lot of other countries, the general population is much more responsible and they follow directions a lot better than we do. But compare us to America... no wonder they are losing 300000 people a day there. And it will be worse before it gets better. Overall, I feel that we have done very well out of the local management of the virus. Yes - we are going to be paying for it for many years to come.
Much as I don't like it, in this case I have to agree with the various Governments and the overall handling of the situation. The only improvement I could suggest is that the Federal Government take over the whole Covid crisis and manage it appropriately. Example, the Northern Territory has no uncontrolled cases - why should they be subjected to a lockdown? Looking more locally, at present Sydney is exploding, so a lockdown of all Sydney is justified (and this is nearly happening now). Give it 10 days and it should all quieten down again. Melbourne did it weeks after the virus had escaped, but eventually they caught it and killed it for a while. State Governments have managed it up to now, but they have vested interests (AFL Grand Final, Cricket tests etc which bring money into the system locally, and these seem to override common sense. A single (albeit inefficient Govt body) would at least have a common hopefully logical approach and we the public would feel less offended. After all, National Defence, Airports, telecommunications and a host of other important functions are managed by the Federal Govt. Covid 19 affects ALL of us, and should be managed by them as well.

Why would the government continue to quarantine returning travellers in the middle of our largest population centers apparently 150,000 people have been returned through Sydney alone ? The more arrivals the more chance of the virus getting out into the community especially with this latest more contagious strain that they have found. If you keep throwing the dice eventually you will lose and unfortunately Sydney and Brisbane have recently found that out the hard way. People returning need to be quarantined in specialised facilities away from the major population centers maybe even in places like Christmas Island and they should be returning only in the numbers that can be safely handled. That may be a bit hard on those who are still on the list but its been over 9 months since the warning was given and even with an accelerated rate of return that list seems be getting longer..
As Brisbane has been declared a hotspot I was just wondering if the Qid health authorities are going to follow the same standard that they set for NSW and Victoria - i.e. no one will be allowed to travel from a declared hotspot until there has been a 28 day period without any cases of community transmission. In order to be consistent the good people of Brisbane should now be confined to their city for at least 28 days from the time that the last case was declared. Dogbox they are planning to hold a test match at the Gabba which is located in the middle of what is now declared a hotspot so it sounds a bit like the comment you made earlier "think of all the people going to the cricket".
My comments about Qld are only tongue in cheek but they show how easy it is for us to throw rocks at each other when things happen to go wrong. I have confidence that the Qid health authorities are working overtime to control the current situation (as they do here and in all the other states). I've no doubt that our so called leaders will continue throwing political mud at each other but I personally try to avoid getting sucked into their rhetoric.

The USA has now a total of 377000 deaths. That's Total. Not per day. So when someone makes a post with hysterical statements such as this I really wonder if they know what is really happening re covid-19. And even daily cases are averaging only around 65000 in the 12 months to date. Today's figures are approx 225000. Cases, not deaths. Facts?
I can accept anyone's opinions regardless of whether I agree with them or not. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. But before you quote numbers check your details.
Now back into hibernation for me.

We live in the ACT. We've planned a three month holiday from July till September. We were going to visit my sister in Townsville. If we can't go we very quickly see everything here.
I'm looking forward to getting the vaccine and herd immunity so that we can again start travelling.

Since the 4th of November, cases in the US have been above 100k every day and climbing. Yesterdays figure was 280k, the day before 255k when I searched for figures. The situation is severe and trending worse, and quoting averages to selectively downplay things, hides that fact.
