Another comment on the difference between news stories is that the demographic targeted by news outlets has a large influence on the stories presented. For example, a good few years ago, The Australian used language aimed at a Reading Grade Average of 11 while the tabloids aimed for readers who could read at an average age of a 8 year old. A lot of the whinges directed towards the ABC is another example of assumed Left Wing bias by some who just cannot understand the complexity of the stories posted there. People's need for "confirmation bias" is pandered to by most news outlets, as does the statements put out by opposing political parties. The trick, in the end, is to dredge news articles and reports and pick out the facts. I always have a preference for news that contains verifiable stats and facts.

State Coroner John Cain on Thursday released fresh data on the number of suicide deaths between January 1 and August 26, showing there were two fewer suicides in Victoria compared with the same time last year.
Between January 1 and August 26, 466 Victorians took their own lives. This was broadly consistent with the same period last year, when 468 Victorians died by suicide, and in 2018, when 461 Victorians took their own lives in the eight months to August 26. The numbers are higher than the same period in 2016, when there were 420 suicides.
The findings contradict widespread assumptions that the number of suicides had been higher this year under the pressures of COVID-19 lockdowns, anxiety about the pandemic, job losses and financial insecurity

I saw that Snail, and struggled to reconcile with all the reported depression and apparent suicide rates. Maybe like the "catch up deaths" for Covid. Yet another statistic or "lies ,damn lies and bloody damn lies"

Maybe its scare tactics by the anti lockdowners, payback to the perceived? scare tactics used about the virus.

Yet again, someone who fixates on one number and thinks it proves everything he wants it to prove.

That makes it hard for those who insist that the Lockdowns have increased rates of suicide. Discussion of suicide rates without showing a verifiable causal path to a trigger is like clutching at straws. An arguable point is that the increased focus on mental health issues is having a positive effect on suicide rates.

"Snail" was merely addressing the claim that ...
... the number of suicides had been higher this year under the pressures of COVID-19 lockdowns, anxiety about the pandemic, job losses and financial insecurity.
To address this claim, only two numbers are relevant -- last year's suicide rate and this year's. Since this year's number is lower than last year's, "Snail" has proven all that he set out to prove.

Aust. pop 25 ml 788 deaths
Sweden pop 10 ml 5,846 deaths
Aust 31,721 to 1 chance of dying.
Sweden 1,710 to 1 chance of dying. Interestingly amost identical to USA which is 1,708 to 1 chance of dying of covid.

So you want facts.
Try this one.
WA has shut down tight and went pretty early.
It is still maintaining a hard border closure.
We currently have very low numbers of Covid and no community transmission.
We are operating, economy wise, almost normally.
Yes there are still some businesses which are affected by the border shutdown, but most are back operating reasonably well.
I have reason to visit a lot of businesses and many are reporting a bumper year as West Australians are having to stay home in WA and are spending their money here.
So this is the fact.
If you lock the place down properly, people obey the rules, the economy will bounce back if you get on top of the virus and stay on top of it.
So for all you conspiracy theorists and other less than intelligent people suggesting that we should fling open the borders, let it run rampant, sacrifice our vulnerable people, I say that you are in the minority and you need to crawl back under your rock and stop spouting rubbish.

Thanks, Iza, but not exactly what I was looking for. The figures for cases, deaths per million etc are all widely available.
What I was hoping to see was the effect on their economy. All I found was one sentence. "Notably the economy was not saved from contraction by the approach."
Thanks anyway.

Qld is almost the same. The current outbreak has been traced back to one naughty person who failed to comply with the border restrictions.
I do agree with your last sentence but would have used less harsh language. I would have referred to those without fact based arguments and those who have no qualifications in public health. A couple of state premiers have got it right and even the actions of Dan the Man seem to have things moving in the desired direction, despite differences of opinion regarding the details.

No; those are not the only two numbers to be considered. The distribution curve also needs to be taken into account.
I thought I proved the point in my Japan post that one cannot simply grab numbers in isolation and project them to virtually any conclusion one wishes to establish, obviously I was not clear enough.
And, keep in mind, a successful suicide is not the single indicator of psychiatric distress; how many self harm and unsuccessful suicides have there been, how much family violence, how much has drug/alcohol abuse increased etc?
Also, give it time, wait until Job Keeper/Seeker ends and the bank mortgage/loan holiday finishes - one hell of a lot of people are going to be under severe stress then.
It may all be roses for you as, thank God, it happens to be for me and mine but a lot of people are/will be very hard hit. Have a care.

Do you really think abusing people with who you disagree is the best way to get your point across and convince them of your argument?
In your mind is calling someone a dickhead or the like a winning argument strategy? I suppose it must be.
Disagree strongly with someone, by all means, even getting a little heated is fine but *respect* others right to hold an opinion which differs from yours and that that does not make them an "idiot" or "something which crawled from under a rock".
