Twitter is just one form of Social Media, this community board is another. Neither are representative but with over 300million active users Twitter shouldn't be dismissed because you (and me for that matter) don't use it. My point ... people, as individuals, are quick to act, irrational and sometimes inconsistent when given direct input into judgements and social media highlights this very well. For instance, it's irrational to blame a PM for the failure of employers to protect their employees.
A question about the staistics quoted ... with over 300million active users Twitter ... wondering how many of those are Australians? Relevant, because the opinions of people from USA, India, Brazil and China have zero relevance here!
Twitter/Farcebook etc are reflections of the global population, but the only relevance to Australia is the Australian users, surely!
The failings of the insulation scheme are more a failure of the employers rather than the scheme itself. Trouble is that the media (and especially the hard right shock-jocks) don't have any common sense, and cannot see the reality of the situation. Without KRUDD's spending, the nation would be in a far worse situation than we are now! (OK, I'll stop now because I am in danger of becoming too political!)

JA2340, I quoted global stats as an indication of Social Media power, not necessarily to be representative of an Australian perspective, because I was trying to point out that fallacy of relying on justice through a fickle public's response. But I looked up the Aussie stats for you and was surprised the proportion was even higher than the global figures with 4.7mill regular Twitter users. BTW, I agree, pollies can't be blamed for failure of employers to follow well entrenched workplace safety laws, sad as it is in the circumstances. The fact we allow our political persuasions to sway our responses to legal issues, is yet another reason we as individuals need to be several steps away from the judgement process.
There is one good outcome from capital punishment, you will not have a repeat offender.

I agree with capital punishment maybe one innocent dies ,but highly unlikely with our thorough law system.
by evenyually freeing our murderers they have the opportunity to kill again and often do.
The death penalty for particularly evil crimes is well deserved why give the scum of the earth another go. .

Mike Harding, just because a site is part pf a media consultancy doesn't mean it has no credence. Just because a media consultancy publishes numbers doesn't mean those numbers have no credence. The two figures I have presented are based on data available from a variety of sources. As an applied statistician in a former life, I can assure you the numbers are as good as any others. I still possess the professional and personal pride to verify data sources before reposting stats on the internet (or anywhere).

HMMMM ... it seems from the scanty bits I have read this bloke entered a home and got stuck into the resident/s with knuckle dusters etc.
Following that, this happened - ".......the 30-year-old understood to have been chased down the street before being tackled to the ground by the woman who was today charged with his murder. The ABC understands it is alleged her 28-year-old boyfriend, Blake Davis, then grabbed a Samurai sword and attacked McKee in the middle of the road."
Seems just a bit more than 'taking action to protect your property or self'

At face value, it would appear that the woman did nothing more than apprehend her attacker. If that's a crime, then this country is to be despised. Now if her boyfriend subsequently went to her aid (remember that the attacker was armed with knuckle dusters), it would seem that his choice of weapon would have been limited to what was at hand. Moreover, since he would need to outreach his opponent (he had already been punched in the eye), I'd say that a sword would be an appropriate weapon under those circumstances.

I don't know about the best country in the world. I have recently returned to Oz after many years away in various countries. Yes, they have their problems too, but since returning here and jumping through the many hoops, which by the way, the many coming don't have to do, and realizing the inefficiency of the system (far less efficient t than some 3rd world countries), the cost of living, the aggressiveness/anger of some people, I am now wondering if it was the right move.
I'll give it another 6 months. Can always sell everything, again.
And, before someones says it, I can always leave.

Today I dropped the van back at the storage yard and on the way home I drove down a road that runs through some bushland joining a couple of suburbs. It passes through a light industrial area so it's usually busy during the day but isolated at night. I saw an area on the side of the road where the long grass had been burned and people had been leaving bunches of flowers. On Monday night 2 guys took a young 23 old to that location threw him into a ditch, doused him in petrol and set him alight before they drove off and left him to die. At 1am in the morning a taxi driver came across him badly injured on the road and promptly called the emergency services. Sadly the young man died in the Westpac chopper on his way to Sydney's Royal North Shore burns unit but not before he was able to give the names of the 2 guys who did it.
What in the supposedly best country in the world do we now believe should happen to those accused (if found guilty) if justice is to be served ? I'm pretty sure that I know what will happen if the past is anything to go by - their defence lawyers will claim that they were not fully accountable due to some sort of substance abuse, they will get 20 years and be out roaming the streets again in 12 or 15. I really hope that I'm wrong as they are not the type of people that I would like either myself or any of my family to run into sometime down the track.

Italy has a low level of child abuse, why? Because the Italians love children so much that most child abusers never make it to the police - the family and friends take care of them. Maybe we need more community concern for one-another. I think most of our Western societies have lost the plot - money and shiny trinkets are now largely the purpose of life, it seems.
