As much as I'm for running generated WHEN YOU HAVE TO . I don't run it befor 8.30 am and after 7.30pm . Imazing at times .. You can stop in a place all on your own .. In the morning there could be 20 or so vehicles around you ., I had a guy complain to me about noise . Not because I was . He said your big motorhome would make a lot of noise . Being quite a big framed guy I walked outside and said .. I can make bloody heap of noise if I want to ., The thing is he camped beside a main road .. Sheesh !! Port Headland .. Some people are just grumpy ., His Mrs apologised in the morning . You'd think there's some comeradery between nomads ? In this case no !!

Wow. I was thinking of getting into caravanning, but the selfish attitudes displayed in this thread have confirmed my fears. No quiet bush camps. Boy, its dissapointing to find attitudes like the horrible neighbours Im trying to escape from.

We have ample solar and battery capacity for our needs, and gas for the fridge and cooking. We use the genie Honda 20i(or whatever) - I we are running low on power due to overcast day, if we want to use tools, like drills etc. Recently we have been using it a bit, as our fridge is sick - but no-one in the free camps complained, always off by just after nightfall, and never (or rarely) on before 11am. Great to have as a power backup.

Our current van has 1 x 200W great in low light solar panel & 1 x 120ah battery. We also have a 2400 Westinghouse generator which is quieter than most gennies & we use it in respectable daylight hours only.
The next van we get will have 400W of low light solar & 2 batteries. The generator will still travel with us.
I like to keep away from other free campers so as to give space, but what pi**es me off is when that next camper has acres to choose from but wants to camp right next to us. Almost like being the only bloke in a 100' urinal & the next dude stands next to you. Kinda creepy!

This thread reminds me of people who lived near us a few years ago. They were not connected to the grid and only had solar power, but when they had a flat battery in overcast weather they took it to the neighbour who are connected to the grid to charge the battery.
The bottom line is solar is great but you still need a backup system in place.
