Bill12 if your pc is fairly new why not back up all your data and buy a new HDD and then install the copy of W7 you have onto that?
you can then have either OS just by swapping the HDD.

Santa, I reckon most of the updates you get from microsoft are to fix security holes and if you have reasonable third party security software you'll probably be OK provided you don't want to install new software because eventually you won't be able to get software compatible with XP same as you can't get new stuff compatible with win 98.

I have a niggling problem with my laptop.
I receive my Telstra bill via email and save it to my desktop. One file didn't seem to download properly and the file icon is empty. The problem is that I can't get rid of it. When I try to put it in the rubbish bin or anywhere else I get the message that the file is no longer located on the desktop and to verify it's location and try again.
When I look at the properties of the icon there are no bytes and the file opens with: windows shell common dll Type of file: file (.)
I can't find this files location so am at a loss to remove it and I cant seem change what it opens with.
Can anyone help?
Regards Chris

hiya pete, if you're talking about saving passwords in your browser, it depends on what one you're using.
if you're on internet exploder you'll need to go to Tools> internet options> content> autocomplete settings....
if it's firefox it'll be Firefox> options> options> security......
Whichever way you go, just be careful. if you set your browser to save passwords automatically it'll save for all sites without confirming. most banking and financial institution sites won't allow you to save your passwords, but if you use the same password for multiple sites you can end up in real trouble.

bill, just for interest' sake, what model laptop did you buy?

chris, what operating system are you using? when you download from your email account, what type of email program do you use? for example - hotmail or gmail through browser, email from outlook or outlook express? can you see what the file extension is? ie: .dat .pdf .xml ??

Thanks for the reply.
I am using W7 and the file was opened from Thunderbird which I don't any trouble with. I can't see what the file extension is. I have tried using Nuance reader but no success.

Another way is to use a password manager such as the free version of Lastpass (https://lastpass.com). You only need to remember its master password, and it will store the passwords for all sites you visit, or create very secure passwords with random alphabetic characters, numbers and special characters (!, @, #, $, etc). When you visit a website for which you've already stored a password, Lastpass fills in the user name and password fields, and can even be set up to log in for you. Comes as an add-on for all the major browsers and works with Windows, Apple and Linux. I use a couple of computers and all have Lastpass, so any new site I add from one computer is available from the others.

Have you managed to load Firefox yet? If not try again. In the early stages you will see a window that has a tick box to copy your settings from another browser. Untick that box. You can copy your Bookmarks over later when you have FF up and running.

Tried doing it both ways Peter, I have given up on that and loaded Chrome which will do the job.
I believe the only solution is to format the HDD and start again but that is a long process becoz I only have an update copy of W7 so I would need to load Vista and SP1 & 2 first and then update it to W7
It is for a mate who only uses it to access the RMS site to do his pink slip inspection reports, and occasionally chase up a part for a vehicle.

I bought a Toshiba C850D as I have always had a good run with Toshiba products, and it was on special at Hardly normal. The laptop itself runs great, and is reliable, but I have had a LOT of problems with win8. None of my previous versions of win office or some other programs work on win8 , and they have made it so you have to buy the new versions, or lose your important files. Another reason to kill Bill Gates. I guess I willhave to grin and bear it. Bill

My Laptop was getting on a bit and I thought it was time to update. I went in to JBhifi and asked about their lappys. I like Toshiba too as I have had a really good run with them.
anyway they had lots with W8 installed and I was not too keen on that OS so I asked if they had any left with W7 OS and he said I will have a look. Lo and behold they had several in the storeroom and I could have the one I wanted with W7 and it was $600 cheaper because it was "superseded"
I am happy with my find.
and NO I will not be using the free upgrade to W8 that came with it.
