I think the words "civil union" are very cllinical and almost business like, whereas "marriage" is a commitment to another person, and very personal. Whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, the marriage ceremony is a celebration of a loving union.
My opinion for what it is worth.
Congratulations to NZ for their stand on the issue. The PM's very funny speech said it all!!!!

Anyone who believes that same sex marriage is a gay issue should read the comments on this thread, especially Rip and Rosie's. After reading R&R's comments, it suddenly dawned on me that same sex marriage is not just a gay issue at all, it's a people's issue. And that means all people regardless of sexuality. Good onya R&R for making your points so well and so convincingly. It's been quite an eye-opener for me today.
It was interesting to hear Premier Barry O'Farrell's comments last night. He's listened to the arguments and is now a supporter of same sex marriage. I haven't mentioned it before, but I put together a short video on the subject last year.

I had seen the video of the announcement and the singing afterwards, and was very moved by it. Watching this video was the cream on top! Mr Williams was not only funny, but abso-bloody-lutely correct in say it's about two people who love each other wanting to be married.
I have a 'claytons' niece and 2 'claytons' nephews who are gay. It was obvious with these three young people from a young age, but when my 'real' niece, my sisters daughter, 'came out' last year, it was a mighty revelation to all of us. Not even her parents had an inkling. And the reason she came out was that she'd fallen head over heals in love with a lovely young woman who she intends to marry later this year. Of course it won't be legal here, so maybe they will now take to a trip across the ditch to get hitched.
And I must say it's wonderful to see her, them so happy.

It just seems to me....that the majority are bending over-back wards to satisfy every vocal minority.....the squeaky wheel gets the most grease. They, the gay people can have anything they want up to taking over the last bastion of a male and female....marriage. This just my opinion, nothing to do with religion...far from it, just sick of the majority having to roll-over every time someone feels they are discriminated against.

I'm not "rolling over" at all. I think it is a wonderful thing that all human beings should embrace. It is not a case of us against them we all belong to the human race. I am so sick and tired of people wanting to segregate the community into sub sections or similar. Marriage is just that . . . two "people" making a lifelong commitment to love and cherish each other in sickness and in health for the rest of their natural lives. I would put money on it that the gay community actually mean what they say when they marry and make their vows and don't often divorce but two hetrosexual people quite often divorce after only a few years of marriage. Marriage doesn't mean what it used to mean to hetrosexuals, it is so very easy to marry and then when you have had enough to get divorced. I have not heard of two gay people divorcing yet. . .anywhere in the world that is because they consider it a gift to marry their soul mate and don't abuse the privilege which I think is fantastic. I think people in general should be allowed to follow their bliss whatever that means whether is means same sex marriage or not.

IMHO this will surely include the capacity to accept-as-equal (ie stop focussing on, singling out or leveraging their position according to) another's sexuality....or for that matter their age/skin colour/gender/disability/intellect/place of birth/.............

Do you prefer the word "concessions" better? What concession am I giving up? My right to have a certain set of morals and thought of what to me, is right and wrong, nothing tangible, but worth a lot to me.
I wish you well in your cause to get same sex marriage here and not have to wait the 9 years that women waited for the vote here after NZ. but just remember that there are folks out there that won't speak-up against for fear of being labeled. Any Happy Hour should show you that.

Like religion I accept the fact that everybody has the right to choose how they wish to live in this world. The gay people of this world have come along way in changing entrenched perseptions of what it means to be gay. I think they are pushing the barrow a bit to far to ask for a piece of paper that say's you are now married, They have the same rights as defacto's, they are not discriminated against as it is law now that they are protected. Will a piece of paper change that, I dont think so.
The world has changed alot and people who live in this world have had to change at a faster rate in these modern times, like others I agree that the religish side of marriage does not mean much nowdays, civil marriage is the norm just like funerals without religion they are more common nowdays.
So will a piece of paper change the majority of peoples opinions, I personnaly dont think so, It will take the dying out of my generation, then we wont have to worry about what is right and what is wrong.
Another thing that I cant get my head around is AIDS, who inflicted this curse on society????
