there are pros & cons for every situation, but it is up to the owner of the unit to decide, I hope you do not have an accident, that is why they call them accidents.
Now as for Punky, don't know why you would want her up front. lol you know you will limit yourself by having Punky with you, you will not be able to go to National Parks.
However friends of ours travel with a cat & dog and they put them into kennels so that they can go into NP's or if in a C/Park there are sometimes people around that will look after animals, usually look on notice board in laundry.

That is my intention wombat, find a place for a day stay for Punky if I want to go somewhere I can't take her.
There's no way I can leave her home, no one to look after her.
As you can see in my last post there was a pro and a con. So will see what happens next week when my s.i.l has a week off work, but pretty sure the barrier wil lhave to come out.
Another thing in regards to taking a dog, when I had my little car and my old dog Mindy, she could jump through from the back to the front as she felt like it. Would curl up in the back for a long sleep and if she thought there was something interesting coming up would pop into the front seat for a chat.
Couldn't do that with the barrier in the way, its actually quite claustrophobic.
Now off out to dinner for my daughters birthday.

Back home, had a lovely meal at the rich River Gold Club. There 12 of us. I was the 1st to leave.
I am only 5foot 3 inch what ever that is in Metric. 160 I think. s.i.l. said need the extra to stretch out. Its a small van but I tell you what, like my old hyundai it runs on the smell of an oily rag.. Will be cheap to run.

This is how my sister has her "Jedda" organised when travelling. The lead is attatched behind the seat somewhere. The Brown shade, she made to keep the sun off.

Our Pug "Spike", camping since 4mths old (now 18mths), travels behind the driver in a harness that has a fairly solid chest pad, wide webbing across the shoulders and waist, plus a loop that the lap-sash seatbelt threads through. He travels on a mat/bed that he uses when allowed into the Lounge room at home for a few hours of an evening.
He can either sit up or lay down, but not stand. In the event of a sudden stop he will not move. On the road we stop every couple of hours where we all stretch our legs and have a drink or toilet break, with Spike having a walk on his lead attached to the harness.
In camp we unclasp the harness seatbelt loop and attach a lightweight chain that is attached to the Van. As we spend all our time outdoors Spike is continually monitored in case he gets tangled or unwanted "strays" show some attention. Three or four times a day we take the harness off and take him for walks on his lead, in addition to his short morning and evening "toilet walks", and at night we remove the harness when he goes to bed.

Thank you both for such good advice. Sheba, is the little one Jedda on the spare front seat there? I love the idea of the brown canopy to keep out the sun, she will have a bed like that so will look at some sort of sun shade like that for her.
Ron & Shirley, will take on board your ideas, looks like the way to go as can't have them running around loose at any stage coming to harm. Have been thinking of getting a chain for overnight stops for while sitting outside the van. At this stage I have an extension lead to walk Punky when needed for toilet stops plus the normal lead for normal walks.
Its a 16 foot retractible lead with a 3 foot training leash.
Wombat I think you confused pug with tug, silly man.

That's why she needs the Shade. She's at Window level.

Thanks Sheba, that is exactly what I want for Punky, so she can see where we are going.
Have saved that photo to my computer to refer back to.
Ron and Shirley, that is the trouble with dogs, they think they see or smell something interesting and want to be off, I would never keep up with her kif she got away.
She is now at the stage of walking around the park unleaded and wanders off to the side to smell the surrounds but the park is well fenced so a good place to train her to come back. Working on it anyway.
Will have her well secured while travelling.

R&S, its not a good idea to chain a pug to the van, I am sure he will not be able to pull it. lol
