We will be taking a generator with us next year. We use an inverter for power where we can. Don't have solar and won't be getting it anytime soon. Will only use it if we need to and are always considerate of our fellow travellers but you can't please everyone I guess. 

G'day all. Re my post on generators. I thank you all for your input. I think I will still go ahead and carry one BUT there is no way (except dire emergancies) would it be run at night or even late afternoons. These are quiet times for other things such as sundowners and hopefully meeting new friends (or even old ones).Looking foreward to meeting many of you on our lap Jack ,Cherie and the four legged kids.

Hi Ibo no prob with the wind its flamable so sell it to the gas company to cover the carbon tax, thats called covering your Assssss.

Funny you should ask Basil faulty about wind gennys,.. I have a Xair 400 watt. 3 blade genny that people use on boats, and they are very noisey when running at full speed.. I carry a alu. poll under the van to put it on.. It can be shut down from in side the van if you wish.. We do run a 170 lt 2 door fridge on 12 volt.. In hot weather it will run 25 min. in the hour.. dont seem much to say that but it takes a little in the summer to keep the volts up.. Also have a pair of sola panels on the roof, them 110-80 watt 2 face ones..and 2 120 amphour AGMs.. plenty to run all.. untill you get a cloudy day or 2..have a small 1kva inverter genny for top ups and watchin tv ect..that is quite as.. and a 2.6 one for the air con when it gets hot..Can connect the car to the van when traverling and would not run the genny when camping over night ...The moden inverter gennys are so quite any how.. Its the 2stroke ones that can make life a bit wanting.... Been on the road since 92 and have heard it all .. just as a bit of info to thoes that worry about getting their genny picked up and taken for a ride. Get your self one of thoes alarms that you pull apart and it lets out the WORST sound,.. tie that to your genny and put it under the genny and fix the other end to a pin- tree root- what ever.. the sound will go with the genny.. The would be genny napper wont carry that for long.. just a thought .. we do need our gennys ...happy charging all..Bob

I did not mean to be offensive in my original post as one or two people thought - it was tongue in cheek, but I do dislike the noise pollution that generators create. I realise that a lot of gennie owners might just not realise it, so if we all start to just politely let them know, the problem will dissapear. We have been travelling since June in a motorhome - we have 2 extra batteries, a solar panel and an inverter to run the laptops. More than enough power, and with gas, can't see any reason why one would need a generator (medical reasons accepted). Everyone to their own, yes run them during the day to do what you have to, but please off in the early evening when people want to sit out and enjoy the evening!! Someone didnt like my post name, sorry about that but we run an animal advocacy and lobby group called www.deathrowpets.net which is quite well known in animal wlefare circles. Enjoy your travels!

You were not offensive to me Paul as I understand what you are saying. You are entitled to an opinion........ just as everyone else is.

Mate , not realy offended, as i said just didn't like to see all that owned a genny
targeted at the same level reguardless of how they used  them.  from the when needed to the 24/7 .use.

You made a point & I done the same .If we all had a dummy spit every time things
didnt go our way we would have dummy polution, that be a bigger prob.

hey Paul, welcome to the forum, mate dont let anyone disuade you from your beliefs or your thoughts, we are still in australia and as such allowed our fredom of speech the ones that shout and procrastinate the loudest are usually the ones who are at fault I have seen the problem generator owners a few times and watched with amusement many tussles involving them, I have seen them filled with sand, thrown in the river and just shut off if the owners would simply consider the inconvienience to others and consider their comfort a little all would be fine, I up camp and go somewhere else when the ignoramouses move in but a lot of others dont if you need power for an illness then go to a c/park, if you need power for your cooking then go to a park, cant make the morning without a hair dryer then go to a park, if you must run your genny to recharge batterys then do it between the hours of ten am and 4 pm dont go into a relaxing quiet peacefull setting and fire up a damn generator, we go there for peace and quiet, in the dead of night even the quietest of gennys sounds like a herd of rhinos as I said, I move on and leave them to their devices, plenty more free camps that are peacefull, a lot of people will not move on and get very agressive when disturbed, only a matter of time before the two meet somwhere, then I sit back and enjoy the show

We don't have a gennie........YET.........but are seriously considering getting one before we do the lap.

We stopped at a nice little "freebie" at Balgal Beach in QLD.  Three of the other nomads had gennies and we were pleased to note that they only used them for about 2 hours max each evening around dinner time then closed them down.

They didn't intrude on our relaxation or the peacefulness of the area.

That's how it should be Ma.!!

Unfortunately, as I have found out, the sun does not always shine. And sometimes not for days. Therefore, while my solar panels work quite effectively in sunshine, they are as useless as hen's teeth on no shine days. Then my small Honda gennie comes out - with thoughts of others before using it.

 

I also have industrial deafness (caused by listening to DeBe's damned boat engines ) and that stops me hearing the high notes and if there is background noise it is very hard to hear some people talk........sometimes .....not a bad thing :) That's indestrial duffness Ducky. Boat motors don't harm your hearing, but I have heard of some other activities with do put your hearing at risk. Be careful what you listen to.
