I used to think that way, and I still do, but there is a big downside. In my case, I'm caring for my elderly mother who is destined to live well into her late 90s. By the time she passes away, my golden years will have been spent looking after her, and all I will have left will be the dregs of an already miserable life. It is a whole of system problem, & not just the medical aspect. Other half has heath issues costing the State a fortune.
But I look after her & do not claim any carer allowances.
But then I don't work either so not contributing anything to the system.
Also do a lot of work on our block of units all the way down to the most menial task of putting bins out. No help from the renters in the building who creating most of the rubbish.
Because I can walk for other half I can save $58 per week in parking fees.
Also in spare time each week collect cans for neighbour's club's charity which donates $5k a year to various charities.
The system as a whole has multiple swings & roundabouts.
There is nobody to look after me when my health fails, so probably the best option is carbon monoxide pointing.

Home Care is a big help to those who want to live out their final days in their own home. My mother receives lots of services in this regard.
One really good service is subsidised, home delivered meals. A typical lunch pack costs $3 after subsidy.
Home Care will provide cleaning services, gardening, washing, cooking. They will also take their clients to the shops, doctor's appointments, etc.
If you need a special chair, bed, shower, toilet, these can be provided as part of the package.
I have a brother who helps as much as he can, but he is not close by. My sister died at a young age. I looked after her during her final months.
I lost my father recently after prolonged suffering. I don't wish to go out in the same way that he did.

So can't see that as being an option due to their time issues. I'm the oldest of the siblings.
I looked after my parents for years, stopped (paid) working for years as I was the only one without kids.

Our Mum died at home, we feel so privileged that we could have this situation, but in 2004 is was costing us $7000 per week for the services, & even then a fair percentage was cash in hand to same workers to save us money & them tax.
My Sister was an ex nurse so the system as a whole trusted her.
You basically need bottomless pockets & skills in the industry & a seriously good family GP.

If the patient is in a bed for any length of time get an Alternating Pressure Mattress. Every third row of air cells gently massages the body pushing blood back up the body.
Our Mum quite frankly should have died from bedsores, she did not have a single one.
Prevention of bedsores solves a multitude of another level of problems.
Will also add, we helped 90+ year old neighbour. We would get a call from her daughter who lived in the Blue Mountains & it would take too long to drive to Manly.
We had a key so could get in, often doing toilet personal care. Actually a couple of neighbours to various degrees.
Our neighbour was always grateful. Her husband died a few years earlier.
She started working at 14 which was very typical for that age group, working her entire life until retirement.

Current history, the previous neighbour had died.
Now there is a new neighbour for the last few years, also she has a new list of health issues dramatically increasing recently & now using a walking frame.
We haven't had to help as such yet, other than a few very mirror non personal care issues.
But I can see the day when her daughter phones from Dubbo, can you pop around to help. Hopefully I don't need a walking frame to get there, but I do have one in the attic... plus shower chair, commode etc!
The end of the conveyor belt is well within view!

You are, of course, quite right with this assertion. Sometimes tge truth ruffles tge feathers of a few sensitive souls.
Simple truth is that the welfare system is rorted by so many.
Certainly welfare is needed to help the needy, but much of this money goes to the greedy and those who see it as a 'right' they 'deserve' to support their lazy, non-productive lifestyle.
Single mothers with 4 children, sired by 4 different men, living in Govt housing.
Disability support pension is a laugh, in many cases, with perfectly capable recipients working as labourers for 'under the table, payments. Two big, strong men who weaselled their way onto such a pension bought a small truck and necessary equipment to become 'piano removalists', and do quite well tgankyou, but 'cash only'.
The list goes on, and could easily fill a page, but those of us who do understand need no more info, while indesputable proof still would not change the view of the deniers. Sad but true. Cheers

The doctors are pushing the system.
Other half had to get both arms scanned with ultrasound.
Had to go in one day for the left arm & the following day for the right arm.
She questioned why they couldn't do left & right arm on one day.
Didn't cost us a cent other than another day wasted & petrol for a second lot of 25km.
It was done under Medicare at North Shore Private Hospital & they past on the bill to Medicare... Twice!

5. Of course the welfare system is rorted by some, but it is needed & used by many more. Design a system which helps those who need it which is not open to abuse by those who would
do so if you can.The alternative is to have no welfare safety net. Pointing fingers at women with 4 children & no partner is ignorant & sexist..
6. I'm sure your list could go on on & fill many pages, but if it's more of the same 'indisputable truths' it would simply be to make you feel more certain in your beliefs but a complete
waste of time for all those who apply even the smallest amount of analysis to their thought process.
I'm just letting of steam, having become tired of your constant arrogant otherising, & narrow thought processes presented to all as if you are somehow superior & cleverer in your way of seeing the world. I don't expect for a moment that you will consider anything other than how to make a comeback, either in your mind or in a post.
Anyway, your broad statements & finger pointing do not warrant anything more than my disdain, so I won't respond further.
I don't wish to engage in argument that I cannot see is likely to be even slightly productive.
I'm sure there are folk who read your otherising posts who are hurt by them, & it is only for those folk I'm taking the time to call out the poisonous attitudes you post here, to let them know that not all of us here consider them to be lesser folk.
I do however suggest you read the link (othering) I posted earlier. It describes much of what you regularly post to a tee, which is sad really as I'm sure there is a side to you I've seen which is likeable.

The doctors are pushing the system.
Other half had to get both arms scanned with ultrasound.
Had to go in one day for the left arm & the following day for the right arm.
She questioned why they couldn't do left & right arm on one day.
Didn't cost us a cent other than another day wasted & petrol for a second lot of 25km.
It was done under Medicare at North Shore Private Hospital & they past on the bill to Medicare... Twice!
