I will never get to see my daughter again, I think by Jan 2022, QLD will go into lockdown again never to be opened to Australia ever again, same with Wa, it may never open up ever, may become a province of China after all. My daughter is in QLD, she does want to leave and come back, but her partner has a great paying job that he loves, so is not wiling to come down here and lose over half of what he is earning to do the same job in NSW. I knew a new variant was on it's way, many more variants to come, and they will get deadlier and deadlier every day.

First up, we live on a island. Viruses do not swim, in the most cases they are carried in on people.
Close our international borders both ways, no exceptions. Manage the virus that exists in Australia and when states have it controlled ( and remember that we were all there early in 2021 ) then open our internal borders and we all go about living a normal lives within our country.
This closure might affect a few people, really, stiff $#it. Remember when all overseas Aussies were told to get home and many of them ignored or blatantly disobeyed that instruction to turn it into a political foot ball.
Arguing and fighting amongst ourselves that is baited mainly by the media would be bought to a minimum if Australians could just get on with their lives. Media comments on the whole are designed to make news, there is no concern to the news directors wether the news is good or bad as long as it can become controversial. As a country we need to demand better reporting and rise above this.
We need govt leaders with enough gonads to implement control on a federal level. Hair brained schemes to open up travel outside Australia by so called responsible CEOs should be discouraged, ignored and prevented under emergency legislation.
Oh then lets bring up emergency legislation. The very people that are whinging and moaning that they are restricted within our country are at times, the same people in the next breath that complain about any government having access to this type of control. FFS they are elected govts by the majority, but a bunch of miscreants screaming abuse on the steps of parliament seem to influence how we all ( the overwhelming majority) have to put up with decisions which in truth aren't the wishes of the people.
Australians should demand federal leadership that doesnt change known needed actions at the whining of an airline company representative or by some character that has travelled overseas for whatever reason and then cries because he wants to come back into Australia even when this new variant of covid could so easily be brought in. This disease is not over by a long shot and the longer island continents permit travel into and out of their countries then this will never be overcome. Remember just where this all started, they will control the world if we continue to have a softly softly attitude.

"The pharmaceuticals manufacturer Novavax has begun work on a new version of its Covid-19 vaccine, aimed at targeting the Omicron variant.

While we wait for the next fix, closing the borders to people travel will keep it out.
International concerns are mounting as COVID-19 continues to sweep through unvaccinated Papua New Guinea (PNG) where, according to Our World in Data website, only 1.7 percent of its population has been fully vaccinated.

We are all Australians that should be able to travel across state borders as our for fathers intended in the constitution, but during events like a pandemic it would be reasonable to require a health check/test clearence to traveling between states.
Fear is an awesome tool when used incorrectly ie our current pandemic has infected less than 1% of the population, but in one form or other 99% have had to bear the brunt of the restriction applied, when totally unnecessarily when applied to areas that have never had a case of covid ie. in Qld you still have to use their silly little checkin app everywhere, why ?

Unfortunately Dorian the reality is that the majority of Third World countries could not organise a booze-up in a brewery.
Without massive specific efforts from 1st world countries, eg. medical teams, logistics, law enforcement, overriding local governments etc then I don't see how, say, 80%+ of the world's population will ever be vaccinated which means we can never beat such viruses as C19.
I suspect my days of world travel have passed and we may be spending many more days under lockdown yet....

Both my post and yours could be regarded as off topic to the OP. Our views are different on how we should handle the virus but in the end we would both like to see our country opened to domestic and interstate travel.
I think the topic is quite valid seeing it WILL affect us all again if just left to run rampant.

Although your figures may or may not be absolutely correct the fact that we have had such low infection rates is because what we have done as a country to help prevent it spreading. The figures from other countries reflect on go well we have done.
In every case the source of this virus has been brought into this country by overseas travellers. This will happen again. it is a no brainer.
Close the international borders, treat and eliminate or at the least, control local infections and if this had have been done at the end of 2020 we would had all had the freedom within our country that we expect and deserve.
We will be overwhelmed if this or any virus is permitted to spread due to inaction from our governments.
If anyones health and safety is threatened by an intruder then lock that intruder from entering your premises.

In places like PNG the primary problem appears to be ignorance. In developed countries the primary problem appears to be stupidity. What we desperately need is a bullet-proof vaccine so that Darwin can weed out the idiots.

When the number crunches count the cost of eliminating this Covid 19 virus from day one, with lockdowns, ring fencing etc, against the cost of living with the virus, to keep the economy going. The elimination path would have been much cheaper.
If I have interpreted what has been said, about this new variant they are calling omicron, correctly. The WHO (World Health Organisation), are saying it has an increased risk of reinfection

I did read a study that showed those countries that tried for elimination of SARSCov-2 benefited more economically than those countries which tried for tolerance. However, that was before the Delta variant. This Omicron variant may be even harder to control.
I agree that health is before wealth but Gladys BurytheJerks changed that with her lax lockdown policies. Now we see demonstrations against any control.

i wonder how many people would have passed on if we all thought like you. we have been isolated from the worst of it ,by closing down people moving about ,restricting international travel, hand sanitizer, facemasks ect ect , there was a financial cost but a lot more of us are still here to complain about all the hardships we incurred, than in a lot of other countries that didn't enforce the restrictions. the low vaccination rates in some countries is allowing the virus to mutate . the good news is the vaccines that the majority of us lined up for, maybe obsolete in the near future . we will all be able to line up again

So you seem to forget there is a hidden effects like suicide, broken relationships, lost jobs, bankruptcies and a massive debt to pay people not to go to work along with infrastructure payments to the states to generate employment.
Large tracts of Australia were closed down on the pretext that covid might spread, it didn't, but the worry warts imposed stupid rules " ie a farmer got fined for not wearing a mask whilst ploughing a paddock" , whole towns were shut down except a few approved protected industries like servos and supermarkets, and the covid beast never arrived, in reality NSW worked out selected lockdowns were more effective than stateside lockdowns, states like SA, NT, WA, Qld, Tas and NT could have had a better management plan that what was imposed buy governments using flawed health advice.
One of those states mentioned that has 2 externally acquired covid cases, why is the restrictions like wearing masks, venue check ins, cannot stand and have a beer, restaurants at restricted capacity, most of this crap is based on poor modelling using flawed data from Europe.
All these small state restrictions are politically motivated under the guise of heath advice.

Large tracts of Australia were closed down on the pretext that covid might spread, it didn't, but the worry warts imposed stupid rules " ie a farmer got fined for not wearing a mask whilst ploughing a paddock" , whole towns were shut down except a few approved protected industries like servos and supermarkets, and the covid beast never arrived, in reality NSW worked out selected lockdowns were more effective than stateside lockdowns, states like SA, NT, WA, Qld, Tas and NT could have had a better management plan that what was imposed buy governments using flawed health advice.
One of those states mentioned that has 2 externally acquired covid cases, why is the restrictions like wearing masks, venue check ins, cannot stand and have a beer, restaurants at restricted capacity, most of this crap is based on poor modelling using flawed data from Europe.
All these small state restrictions are politically motivated under the guise of heath advice.

The number of suspected deaths by suicide in Victoria each year has been relatively steady over the past five years, with the number in 2020 (713) similar to 2019 (721), 2018 (703) and 2017 (682). The number of suspected deaths by suicide reported in Victoria from 1 January to 30 September 2021 (488) is similar to the numbers reported for the same periods in 2020 (542), 2019 (536), 2018 (507) and 2017 (492) (Coroners Court 2021b).
They're motivated by a desire to keep people safe. I guess there would be votes in that.
