You would think, for the many container ships going thru at 1 million dollars per transit per ship over the years, that they would have made enough to build another canal, but ah no, lets line our pockets and just pray that we never have an incident, with a ship blocking or sinking in the canal. This mob, are definitely not thinking ahead. You would think, they would get in a big mining excavator, instead of a lone 1 metre bucket size, one that can only reach 6 metres like the one they have now trying to dig it out. They don't want to spend any money on the problem. They will also have to change the rules to stop something this big from going through there anymore, and also have suitable equipment in there just ready for a problem like this in the future.

Bicyclecamper is so simple. A canal making millions. No costs of course. And just up the road sitting idle at a no existing mine is a huge mine digger. Easy hey?

I don't know about you guys but I am having trouble working out how a dirty great big heavy ship full of massive containers can get into a position like that in the first place.
Maybe I'm a bit thick ?
Keep Safe on the roads and out there (including water ways if near that captain)

Dougwe just have a look at the cars parked in the local shopping centre. If they can park a car like that surely something that big could be to! Maybe the pilot sneezed!

Maybe they needed some sort of nautical WDH.
It wouldn't have happened on the good ship Venus, too many other things going on.

The good ship Venues has been banned along with Noddy and Dr Seuss. But I believe you can still find a copy of Eskimo Nell.

Apparently the ship turned sideways in a blinding sand storm.
It is 400 metres long, yes 1300 feet, holds 20,000 containers. The canal is only 200 metres wide.

Five ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Venus between 1758 and 1972. The most recent was a destroyer launched in 1943, which was converted into a fast frigate in 1951, and served during the 1950s and 60s, to the surprise of those who assumed the name in the song to be apocryphal. (She was a sister ship of HMS Troubridge, whose name inspired the fictional "HMS Troutbridge" in the long-running BBC radio comedy The Navy Lark of the same period).
Further Venus is a super yacht designed by Philippe Starck's design company Ubik and built by Feadship for the entrepreneur Steve Jobs at a cost of 105 million. Jobs died in October 2011, a year before the yacht was unveiled.

Doug, there are several ways any ship may "turn sideways" the most common is a sudden gust of wind, Current can also effect the forward navigation, a sudden activation of a Kort Nozzle or Bow Thruster could also turn ship unexpectedly. Of course the most frequent loss of steering is created when a ships engines fail.
The Suez is not a Mill Pond it has currents and tides.

In the summer of 2014, months after taking office asPresident of Eygypt Abdel Fattah-el-Sisi ordered the expansion of the Ballah Bypass from 61 metres (200 ft) wide to 312 metres (1,024 ft) wide for 35 kilometres (22 mi). The project was called the New Suez Canal, as it allows ships to transit the canal in both directions simultaneously. The project cost more than E£59.4 billion (US$9bn) and was completed within one year. Sisi declared the expanded channel open for business in a ceremony on 6 August 2015.

You only have to feel how much effect a sudden strong gust of wind has on your van to see how a ship stacked that high with containers could be pushed of course - it would have acted like a giant sail. By the news reports they are investigating whether it was the wind alone or some human error was also involved in it running aground.
Peter67 now I'm offended on behalf of all Australians. Or at least the sober ones.

When we, donna and I went thru the Panama canal, in 2011, it cost us $4000 plus wages for 2 linesman sailors of $1200, and at the time, it was $550,000 for a large container ship. I am surprised it is only $350,000 dollars for a ship to go thru the Suez canal. Our Hanse 41 SE, had to have another boat, a small 25 footer tied up to it for the transit, as it was too small to go it alone, but we both had to pay that price. At the time I think from memory, we had to do 9 knots, and my boat did only 9.5 under power, an the little boat, only did 6.8 , so he ran at 6 knots and I set mine for 8.7 and we just managed to get to 9 between us.

So the transit fee is about $688.00 per tonne vs $0.87 per tonne.
You need a bigger boat!

They were not caring about weight with us, though, they are just greedy. Panama, is very dear to visit, Supermarkets food were tripple the price of US markets. I had to take on extra bottles of water, for the transit, as we only made 41 gallons a day thru the watermaker. Fuel was 3 times the cost of the average in the US. It was just one very expensive country to HAVE to visit. Wont be doing it again, if I ever get back into sailing AND the worse Customs Office , I have ever dealt with. They were supposed to be at the boat at 2pm , so we could transit at 4pm, but they arrived at 3.20pm, and proceeded to search everything, and we were running our Aussie flag, not our US flag, made no difference, so we missed our sailing and had to wait until 9am in the morning, making us having to pay extra for the linesman watch crew sailors. It was just a schmoozle.

I saw one animated clip, where going from what was claimed to be, satellite info
The ship started turning towards port, to get on the left side of the canal, before it turned to starboard, and ploughed into the right hand bank
I later on read, that there were 2 Suez Canal pilots on board, when the incident occurred
