Just saying , about 4 mths ago I booked two powered van sites for 7 days at Glenn Innes showground for the Celtic festival ,end of April.
Recently my wife diagnosed with problem and has to be in hospital for an operation so we can't make it.
I phoned the showground to see if we could possibly receive a refund under the circumstances.
The lady there said " no refund thats our policy".
So I asked if we could possibly leave it in place for next years show ?
She said "no that would be too hard"???
So they are keeping $480.00 for nothing ,except some admin which is understandable.
I just think its about time there was some consumer protection in these cases.
/The showground is very big ,Its not as if they have to resell the spaces, and anyway its a month away.
We have been to this show a few times with 1-6 other vans (friends), and usually spend a fair amount between us in Glenn Innes and surrounding areas.
I dont think we will not be travelling there again, which is a shame .
Am I being unreasonable?
Regards Orid

Yes you are being unreasonable.
Did you check their policy before you booked?
Did you take out travel insurance?
You could perhaps sell your booking to someone else and recover your money, but maybe you think "no that would be too hard"?
Cheers,
Peter

Life shouldn't revolve around dollars entirely - I bet the managers would have a

We will be down there in a couple of months - won't go near the place and will call in
and ask them about their refund policy.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some sort of compromise under the circumstances. According to their website the Glen Innes Severn Council prides themselves on their customer service. Maybe a call to the Mayor could get you a more acceptable response. Oh yes ... the showground probably runs their own race separate from the council, but what they do can reflect very badly on council.
By comparison, we 've had a booking for the Man From Snowy River festival and sought to delay for a year. No problem! So it can be done if the organizers choose. Keep trying.

While organising accommodation via airbnb recently, because of Covid I decided to check refund policies and some places want up front full payment with no refund, other places want payment a few days before, some have part refund some total refund, depending on when you cancel, some take into consideration Covid some don't.
Lucky for me the airbnb website has a warning to check refund policies.
I guess it's buyer beware of the small print
If their policy is no refund I guess you've blown your money.

I recently had a very different experience. We booked into a park for a couple of days. Got a messa.age of an emergecy .was advised no refund but would be given a credit for use in following 12 months. Cjrcumstances were shch we didn't make it back. 6 years later rang to make a booking and was, adised that I had a credit on thejr computer system and did I want to hse it on thd new booking. Was taken aback but pleased. Glenn

Orid, they might have a 'No Refunds' policy, but you should be entitled to a credit for a different time, they have had your money for 5 months, something I don't do is pay in full, just leave a deposit.
There was all this crap when the Travel Agents wouldn't refund money cos they had already passed it on to the Airlines, so a lot gave Credits.

Keep in mind not all showgrounds are equal. Some are simple show society run. Others council run etc etc. Therefore there are a myriad of possible rules and regulations.
Simple customer relations / service should sort the issue out.

Note that some accommodation sites that appear on websites are actually "Wotif" or "Trip Advisor" sites - not actual Motel/Hotel sites - these also will not refund the accommodation charges - even if prior cancellation direct with the Motel/Hotel has occurred.
Personally I believe all of these overseas "Middlemen" Companies should be banned from Australia. Ned Kelly was a gentleman compared to these companies.

For those who are unaware, Funeral cover is an insurance policy, just like your house or car insurance. Why would you get your money back if you changed your mind about needing the policy?
Clearly some do not read what they sign.
Maybe the "blame" for some of these issues rests with the buyers, not the sellers?
When you purchase any product or service, there is an implied (and legally binding) contract between buyer and seller.
Unless there is something in writing to the contrary, a seller has no obligation to make a refund if you change your mind, for whatever reason. We should be very grateful if a generous supplier does make a full or partial refund. We have no right to be indignant if they don't.
We can however use their refund policy (and other aspects of how they conduct their business) to decide whether or not to continue to give repeat business to a particular vendor.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Orid
You are definitely not being unreasonable you should have at least had the deposit only charged which is usually about 10% and the remaining funds returned or in credit.
I have had similar problems with paying in advance and now only pay the bare minimum but your problem is very common in the accommodation industry as every business has different policies and most staff are only following the rules set in place by the highracky.

I assume this crowd responsible for the booking demanded full payment due to the popularity of the festival - I'd be giving them a miss in that case. I can understand if they wanted a deposit and generally these places want the full amount paid in the last week.
It's an expensive lesson. I'd suggest if they refuse to budge that you state something about "Word of mouth services" - good service offered, you recommend them to your friends; poor service offered, everyone gets to know about it for the wrong reasons. DO NOT MENTION THIS OR OTHER FORUMS.
There are companies here in Townsville that do not have to advertise - W.O.M. works well.

Ha Ha Peter 's ,he's ok ,
Actually funny that he mentioned expecting your money back after paying insurance for 40 years and not claiming .
I think most of us pay house insurance ,and never claim .
Well it reminded me ,about 7-8 years back I thought bugger it and phoned ,Commonwealth bank home insure to claim for a circular saw that had burned out.
The guy on the other end told me to go and get a quote from a repairer on the saw and send it in .
Well I couldn't be bothered and just went out and purchased a new saw.
About 4 months later the insurance guy rang me and asked why I hadn't sent in the quote ?
I told him I couldn't be bothered and went and bought one, and not to worry.
He asked me how much I had paid for it, which was around 450 dollars if I remember , he said "ok have a good day " and that was it.
About a week later they sent me a cheque for the amount.
Now that was so nice yes?
