Bakeries, happy hour nibbles & drinks, sitting down relaxing all day, fun but NOT good for you.
We're not being judgemental but over the past 4 years we can't help noticing how many nomads are overweight & do very little exercise.
We initially put on weight in the first 1st year of our retirement. For the past 3 years we've been walking briskly for around an hour EVERY morning & have lost 10kg each. It feels great!
I've been retired 5 years now & have a bakery & coffee addiction. I haven't gained weight but stomach muscle has turned to fat. I walk regularly & kayak when near water. Trouble is most exercise does little for the stomach muscles.
Good topic DD. It's a good thing to stop & think about your physical health.
Cheers Pete

Wasn'me.
You think you got it hard.
I raced Outrigger 6 man canoes till I was 68.
75 now and a computer sitting statistic.
I've lost 30plus % of my muscle mass. and it's still there.
In a different form. Soft and floppy
Regarding stomach exercise.
Nice and easy Apart from regular active sex.
When waking up in morning. and on bed.
Lie on your back and do stomach. "CRUNCHES" NOT.... Situps.
Legs straight. arms by side.
Contract tummy and hold.
Try to get up to 50 OVER TIME (for the starters) and holding for few seconds at start.
Building up to 30 sec's or so when proficient.
DO NOT TRY TO DO "SIT UPS" they can damage an old body.
When proficient.
You can do then sitting on lounge. Driving car. ANT static situation.
(on plane is good)

I plead guilty to not doing enough exercise.
When 'on the road' though I do lots more ... If near water, at least 1 1/2 hrs. kayak paddling, then 1 hour push bike riding .. if no hills or wind .. both morning and afternoon. To be honest though, good paddling technique possibly reduces the exercise value of kayaking & I do concentrate on technique. Good for torso but not so much arms perhaps.
I was 92kg. when I retired from my sedentary job at age 58 and so I used a dietitian to revise my diet & introduce a walking exercise regime. I lost 10 kg in 3 months and kept it off for about a decade. Felt so much better. Gradually put it back on as my caravanning trips decreased. Now back to 90 kg & do little or no walking. Diet is still OK but insufficient exercise.
The less I do the more lethargic I get.

I'm a bit of an exercise nut & always have been. I do a variety of cardio & resistance exercises. Its a lifestyle thing! I like doing stuff like abseiling, bush walking, fun runs etc & you have to keep yourself reasonably fit to do them. The hardest thing for me is keeping fit while travelling! My jaunts around the outback are reasonably short due to other commitments, and I can really feel a loss of fitness after 3-4 weeks away. I can empathise with people travelling full time! It must be near impossible to keep fit?
NB: heaps of exercises help the tummy! I find that horizontal bicycle crunches are the best return for time/effort put in. (google will help you find them)
A word of caution though, if you are old enough to be on this forum & haven't exercised regularly throughout your life, I think that you should most likely see your doctor before you try ANY exercise ;)

My Doctor/Specialist is the problem, too many things on the list of don't do's to get an effective workout. Swimming is about the safest but not feasible for most places we go. I do however manage to maintain my weight with the little exercise I get.

I mostly always used to at least walk 6klm a day. I've got plantar fasciitis now though, so pumping out 2 is a drama. It's really annoying because I like hoofing it. Recently I was in a lovely little town that had a free pool, so I swum every day, but.....I don't think I'll be seeing a pool for a while out here.
So, I'm just managing to get a little bit done which includes my hobby of geocaching and having a little bit of a hunt around the bush. I wish it would clear up....I've had it for 6 months and my patience is wearing way thin with it.
Travelling does make it hard to get into other things that I did routinely before, such as Zumba, pump and yoga. Sometimes if I stay in an area long enough I can source things like that, but it's rarely a place big enough to have those kind of facilities, I'm in these days.

Like a couple of you, I'm a Paddler. (And surfer).
Started in Dragon Boats and went to the more Challenging Outrigger Canoes.
I compete in the OC6's (6 man), OC2's (2 man) and mostly OC1's... and OC4's for Surfing.
There's an Outrigging Race/Regatta on most weekends in Queensland. ($10-$20 entry fee)
I train seriously 3 times a week and socially 2 times a week.
I use the Free Apps of MyFitnessPal for diet and a few Garmin Vivo-Active HR Watch connected to Garmin Mobile Connect for my fitness (and to get faster). Both Apps on my IPhone, and they "talk" to each other.
It's like having a Dietitian, Sports Scientist and Coach in my pocket talking to each other and working out what's best for me...and all for nothing.
What a Wonderful time we live in!!

Hi Krusty. OC6 mainly.
I have a coupla paddles for sale if anybody in your club want to buy one. One is 52in straight shaft. T'other is 52in Curved shaft.with kiwi bird transfer on back of blade. I have shonky wrist and it puts pressure at the right angle.
Did dragons up in Cullen Bay, Darwin a couple seasons when we up there. Nah. 6's much better, more personal.( Normally No 4, engine room). In Dragons you just a number. on row ?.
Up here we use the sixes to surf and often have to back paddle to keep bows up our 4 was a cut down 6. Clumsy and heavy as hell for 4 paddles..Off balance and seating wrong.
Sprint training was good. Beach to 500 mtr mark straight out. 2 min's rest. 500 back, paddle and surf if good water. 2 min's, then back out again etc. That was thurs and\or Tues 1 hr each training for races.
Sat was 1hr and half or so at 58 to 62 a min, varying. integrated with sprints for full time not normally any rests.
I used to piss some off as I have a very slow pulse from distance running. when some were reading 200plus in sprints, I'd be ticking over. In same boat. and very rarely topping 80bpm. Normally 76\78. regardless. 52 down to 46 resting.(now)
Towed a canoe down to "Ted" on Mcleay Isl, from Cap Coast a few yrs ago to start a club down there. You know him?. Tell him Mack and Di say Hello if you do. He is a character.
Our club girls were a LOT more, both competitive and successful than the blokes. Won in Hawaii one yr.
It'd be one of the most "complete" body exercises there are. You use your toes. Knees. arse. the lot. I started 57yrs finished 68 yrs. wish I'd found it 20 yrs earlier. But too busy sailing and running.
All exercise. When capable is great. Harder the betterer.
I ran 6 days a week for near 40 yrs,
long ones on off days.even when doing 12hr shifts and more on machines. Usually 8 1\2 to 9 min miles. slower on 12hr runs
And. I ate my Mars Bars. and crunchy cheese\tom rolls on the run too.
People reckoned I was weird. Nope. just a pig.
