In Tasmania, it is now illegal to carry a knife, including a pocket knife, in a public place unless there is a "lawful purpose" and "being handy" and "self protection" are not "lawful purposes". That includes a knife in your vehicle if your vehicle is in a public place, though there are provisions to have it secured in your vehicle, but they are vague, so Im not sure how this affects campervans etc. Check out the website below for details, or rather, lack of them as it is pretty general. So, to avoid becoming a criminal in Tasmania, check out the site below before entering the State.
How about all those large knives in your van or motorhome.

Same in Victoria...a girl got fined $1000 for having a Kmart Box cutter in her haversack on her way to work at Kmart...absurd if the plods want to get pedantic...a fishing knife in your car in Victoria is classed as carry and carries a $1000 fine...if you have a penknife on your car ring and enter Licenced premises you are liable to $2000 fine...
When I rolled my Landrover and was hanging upside down by my seat belt almost suffocating ,it was only my small pocket knife in my pocket that enabled me to cut the seat belt to release the pressure...they can go to hell if they think I will not continue to carry a small pocket knife in my pocket whilst travelling....I'll risk their $1000 fine or at least fight it in Court.. The irony of knives and supposed control of dangerous blade weapons is that the majority of murders in Australia are carried out by the not so humble kitchen knife because its available ..or a cheap throw away $4 Kmart special....

Also having a set of knives in a caravan is obviously a lawful reason to have a knife so no problems there.
The scenario that goldfinger notes - using the knife for safety is, from my interpretation, however not lawful - go figure. I would hope that reason would prevail though. I guess their argument is you should have a custom seatbelt cutter ($$).
As usual another 'knee-jerk' reaction from pollies and law makers without thinking out the full consequences of the modified law.

Up here they use screwdrivers, gardening trowels, star pickets, spray cans of oven cleaner, syringes filled with red stuff, busted longnecks, hammers, hatchets, axes, shovels, keys or anything handy in the near vicinity of where they want some cash. No need for a knife.
What about a cut throat razor...if it's in your toiletry bag then that would be lawful? How about a nailfile.
Bottom line is that it is up to the police officer concerned and I really do not think they'd strip search 'ordinary' people on the pretext they may have a pen knife.
By the way I always carry a pen knife on my belt....never had a problem. Still legal in Qld AFAIK.

A little like not being able to take a pair of nail clippers in your ''carry on luggage'' on a plane. Carrying a potentially lethal weapon.
Have they banned cork screws which we carry in our glove box just in case we strike a non-screw cap bottle of wine.
Hang on! Maybe the cork screw could come in handy for the ''shiny bums'' that think up this type of rubbish.

a real problem.........so many people are being stabbed with knives in the past couple of years.
I would hope the police would use a common sense approach to enforcement. A young guy carrying and flick knife into a night club or pub intends it to be a weapon. A girl carrying a box knife to work for work purposes is not.
If the police cant apply common sense, then the Courts will.

In Victoria it is an offence under the Summary Offences Act to carry an "offensive" weapon. Some are classed as offensive per se such as knuckle dusters and flick knives....otherwise it is up to constable plod to prove to the court that it is intended to be used as an offensive weapon....hence Mick Dundee would be in trouble whereas factory worker Guiseppe with a couple of apples and a peeling knife in his bag going to work would certainly be excused The court has to look at the circumstances and apparent intent before it can be deemed offensive....
Re Tasmanian law you would have to read the statue of parliament to understand the intended nature of the legislation....but you will find that they vary little from state to state.
Hope this may alleviate some concerns.

An amendment to the Police Offences Act 1935 comes into effect this week, clarifying provisions that ban carrying knives in public places unless there is a lawful purpose.
The amendment enhances the original intent of the legislation, by allowing police to proactively remove knives from people in public places who dont have a lawful reason to have them.
Knives are the most common weapon used in crimes in Tasmania, and this change aims to ensure our public places remain safe and secure.
The change is intended to improve public safety by removing knives from public places before they can be used to hurt people.
People undertaking lawful activities that require use of a knife wont be affected. For example, a tradesman who uses a knife in their work will be able to carry it on their way to and from work, and while they are working. Similarly, recreational activities will also be exempt. Eg people going fishing, camping or hunting can possess a knife for those purposes
However people who regularly carry a knife, including a pocket knife or multi-tool, can no longer do so in a public place, unless pursuing a specific lawful activity for which the knife is required.
Why is the law changing?
The change is an enhancement to existing provisions, clarifying that a knife is a dangerous article and cant be carried in a public place without a lawful excuse. In Tasmania there are around 140 offences a year committed against people involving knives much higher than any other type of weapon, and far exceeding offences against people involving firearms. This equates to nearly 3 offences a week, including assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, and murder. Even where people dont intend to use knives against others, their availability when conflict occurs can see individuals resort to them, or have knives used against them. This is especially true in circumstances where people are affected by alcohol or other drugs.

I carry a multi tool in all of my vehicles & sometimes add one to my belt. As well, my town car's keyring has my antique pen knife with its 1" blades.
But then perhaps the one in the Patrol is OK when I am towing the van ... exempt as I am 'going camping' I suppose.
I have a couple of knives in my picnic basket & portable BBQ kit too. Usually in the back of the Patrol. Again for 'going camping', so exempt.
I don't think that I will change.

When I worked in the city I always had a Swiss army knife in my pocket. Soo many uses...bottle opener, can opener, cork screw, screw drivers, magnifying glass and tweasers for splinters, nail file...need I go on?
