Why do some stay incognito and others use their own name...

I have noticed here that some posters call themselves by an assumed name and never let on what their real name is and others just use their real name or sign off with their name.
Are they hiding from someone or something..
OR
Do they feel they can say what they like without anyone really knowing who they are..

Gday...
I use a psuedonym and non-identifiable avatar because I like to maintain some control on what others on the internet about me ... until I know them better.
It is definitely my preference to not have a photo of the real me published on any forum.
I sign all my posts/replies with my real first name ... and in my profile is my full real name - but very little other information.
It is interesting though, noticing your post that began this thread that you have a psuedonym and a non-identifiable avatar ... but you didn't sign it with your real name.
I cannot recall whether you usually do sign off with your real name ... but who cares ... you'll always be oldbobsbus to me
That won't change unless you turn in what some call the 2-percenters Then I will just ignore you
cheers - John

Well, well
Just goes to show .... I had never noticed your email address or the website in your signature block ... but then again, perhaps none of us ever read the actual signature block of others that appears automatically.
I still only know you as oldbobsbus and that is all I need to know ... knowing anything else about you doesn't bother me.
If I really wanted to meet with you or exchange some other information, I would just PM you ... works for me.
Unless of course, as I said earlier, you become one of the 2-percenters then I will just ignore you

Geeee John how much more can I identify myself...
My psuedonym is my email addy and my avatar has my christian name on it and I answer to Bob or anything else you want to call me so long as you call me when dinna is on too...
You always sign off as John so that is fine so when I want to answer you I can address you by name..

If you google your name it is interesting what is revealed and if you google your nick name or avatar I think you will be very surprised at the amount of information that is shown, all your past posts are still there and in these times were identity theft is becoming more common the less you reveal about yourself under your real name is important and your email address should be kept hidden as much as possible.
Cheers

David, I have nothing to hide or no one to hide from so anything that comes up on google doesn't worry me..
As for my email addy, I am in control of what I look at and what I send to the junk bin to be blocked..
I am not talking about me I am asking talking about others that want to be part of the group/team/membership but dont want to be identified..

Hey John,,, Bob's no 2 %er,,, he's the real deal.
My name is in profile as is state etc. Like to keep email private as PM is available.
As far as "hiding" important info on websites, it is irrelevant really as there are databases available that have a really good history of you,,, all you need is someone in the know and pay the $. My brother inlaw in the 70's baited me with,, I can find out XXXX about you, I challenged him, and he found out almost everything in one printed report,,, this was the 70's.
EDIT: Just googled myself,,, I didn't appear, even on face book (info),,, which I detest. Plenty of others with same name have prominence,,, so I may be "low profile",,185cm guy??? LOL

Nothing to hide here either, but I don't want to shout out "here I am, come and get me" either.
Especially seeing that this is basically a "travellers", forum.
If your real name and address is bandied about, and you post"weather is great in Whoop Whoop", you might have a nasty visitor turn up at the empty house to relieve you of your hard earned trinkets.
As I have become more relaxed on here, I have started to sign off with my real christen name.

Many moons ago, as the flow of discussion by some forumites became disruptive and called into question the value of some other forumites it was postured that this minority of disruptive forumites formed only 2% of the membership.
Consequently, as is the want of any population, it became a 'label' to identify those who were of the disruptive minority.
I have no idea if this minority is actually 2% - perhaps it is only 0.001% ... but that is what has become the 'label'.
As with all such labels, it needs to be taken with a grain of salt perhaps
