Check out your local library. Many of them allow you to download e-books for up to 3 weeks, and its free.

Thats where I get all my books too Milo (around 4 per week). To make it easy to take my books everywhere with me I download them to my phone. Plus the library provides Apps to use and will give you personal help in getting it set up and working

For cheap books email ebook.hq.fl@gmail.com to get a book list. The books come in PDF format but with calibre you can convert them straight to your reader

Calibre is more an e-book manager rather than a download manager ... that is it manages files on your computer and syncs it with the e-book reader you want to use performing whatever conversions are needed. There are heaps of instruction sites and videos on youtube about how to set it up and run it. It's an extremely powerful application for both PC and mac - the different versions can be downloaded from here.
Similarly a google search on download free ebooks, or download epubwill reveal stacks of sites offering free e-books in various formats all of which can be managed by calibre. Torrent sites also have a lot of e books but downloading from them needs some additional software and instructions.

I presume that Milo has an normal ( Windows ) computer as well
I normally connect my asus tablet to my computer by usb cable
I remember that you can't do that with an ipad
what if you open it ( the ipad ) in your network ( don't know if windows can see the Ipad )
just a thoughts
and than put that file in the right folder
( in my case ebooks )
