As a recent poster said in another post, the biggest issue in travelling with dogs is OPDs (other people's dogs).
I agree.
We can deal with vaccinations, picking up poo, keeping ours on leads, controlling barking, protection from baits / ticks / fleas, CPs which don't welcome them and us, etc.
But we have no contol over the bad behaviour of other owners, and, as mostly the "rules" are an honour system, no one else can control them either.

Rosie, I see your point. Dog-owners aren't all the same and the nice ones with the good dogs get lumbered in with the not-so-nice OP with poorly trained dogs. Not usually the dogs fault.
I'm keen to have a dog, but my partner keeps finding reasons not to, and most of those reasons are OPD's.
I'd actually like to ask if that spare lightning bolt could be used on the cat-owners who let their cats out overnight to predate on so many native birds, especially when they are nesting/raising chicks at this time of year.

DOGS....!!!!! Responsible dog owners keep them ON THE LEASH, or tied up with rope under the awning. Also control your " dog fleas ". Our free camp site in St Laurence Qld was riddled with bl.....dog fleas we had to flea bomb the motor home. Wash your dogs and apply flea control.
You don't use soap and water ??????? Pick up what's left behind ?????
It's not the dogs.....give the owners a good kick up the rrrrrrsr.

Had an acquaintance call in a few months back. He told us about a "great" place to camp... Dogs allowed on leash etc.
Then he went onto tell us about how, although he had been going there for years, some "newcomer" had words with him about his dog running free.
His answer was "I've been coming here for years"
Can't see how that works.
He hasn't raised the issue since !

I trained my dogs with a water spray bottle. Obedience training say never to reprimand your dogs ( today's world!!) but a squirt of water had them knowing they were naughty.

My biggest problem is with ODPs (Other Dogs' People).
IME 90% of dog owners are rubbish.
Last night some dog down the street barked nonstop for several hours. Before that, some yappy rodent barked on and off for most of the afternoon. During the day, EVERY DAY, my sh*tbag neighbour's dozen rodents yap every time their backsides itch.
Then there are the cats who defaecate, urinate, and excavate in other people's yards and treat them as their own nocturnal playgrounds.
BTW, I'm a dog owner myself. To those other dog owners who are watching this thread, I would venture to guess that there are many more people with the same opinion as judith (that's meant to be lowercase, isn't it?) who have kept quiet out of diplomacy.

Seems like you are talking about the situation at home, Dorian.
That's a diferent issue, in my book. You can discuss it with your neighbour- especially as they are permanent, and you have a relationship with them which is longer than with neighbours on the road. In addition, you can complain to the council rangers about noise etc.
On the road, its a whole different dynamic. Relationships are brief, transient or non existant, and there's no point calling the rangers who won't come for a temporary transgression. Even CP owners don't take action unless there's money involved somewhere.
I can truthfully say that in every free camp I have ever been in, unless we are there alone, we have seen at least 1 dog running free, and always a large dog.

Every dog owner I have met is a good dog owner & blame the bad dog owners. How does that work?
I agree with Judith, especially the comment re big dogs in caravans & cars. A 1/2 hour walk is not enough for a big dog after being in the car all day travelling or being tied up under the awning.
If there is nowhere for the dog to run free it becomes cruel.
I do know some good dog owners. Friends of mine camped near me for a week or so & their german shepherd was very well cared for.

We are still in the lucky country. We can free camp in Australia and when you have dogs you have to respect
the rights of other campers around the site "the on the leash protocol" is the friendly one, and pick up the "doos"
so you carry a plastic bag and pick it up, respectfully.
We motor homed through the USA and Alaska for over a year and everybody has dogs
there in RV parks (50 acres minimum size) $15. per night, and National Parks (100 acres average), $12. per night in all National Nature parks all have toilets and showers (some cold only), and...if your dog is loose, off the leash, you get evicted "on the spot" every where. There are dog bag stands everywhere. No such thing as free ove rnighting anywhere.
No freebies anywhere accept parking free over night at the big Walmart stores, or Alaska in the wilderness
with the bears, most give that one a miss. We had bears roaming through at night in the national parks, so you carry a flash light.
Then there are many big rest stops along the free ways with big toilet blocks, cold showers,
and free wi-fi (big enough to park 200 trucks and 200 cars) no overnight camp stops allowed. Daytime parking no problem.
We find in Australia that it's all "anti dog" from councils ,beaches, RV parks to national parks, and caravan parks would do more
business if they had a "dog section" at the back with dog walks, but most are very small, amateurish set ups, where I cannot even
get my motor home through, forget trying to turn around. We have thousands of acres here to set up big RV parks if the Councils
and National parks would get off their hands. Meanwhile though we are lucky to enjoy free camping.

Shouldn't this topic be called 'other people?
The same people who don't clean up after their pets are most likely the ones who also don't clean up after themselves too, they probably are like that at home s well, people tend to be either responsible for their own actions or not.
In the end it is those who take no responsibility who lose us all independent sites - dog owners or not.
I admit I have always travelled with dogs, big and small...long walks in am and again in pm, keep up with training games, this is my lifestyle not a holiday so the dogs are very comfortable with their routines, they are never permitted to run off leash in camp, even if I am there alone, CAMP IS CAMP!
I am far more annoyed by the travellers who leave camps filthy for those of us that do the clean up thing before moving on, I am also annoyed by the Local Councils who blame all the grot on travellers alone, yet when one visits parks in the town they too are filthy with local type rubbish etc.
But what I really do not like at all are the people who decide 'I don't like dogs so no one should have them or travel with them.

My wife and I travel with such an animal, a small Pomeranian, he is obedient, intelligent and a lot of fun.
