On Today Tonight this evening, Spending The Kids Inheritance, should be an interesting look at what they have to say.

Personally I find Today Tonight impossible to watch, but of course each to their own... as for spending the inheritance, I am sure there are enough pubs and bordellos for an old rake like me to spend it in lol

I saw the show and noticed that no mention was made of the fact that the "inheritance" was earned by the parent during their working life and they were entitled to spend it in their retirement, ie; the parents earned the money by hard work so it is theirs to do with as they wish.
If they leave anything for the kids well that is a bonus for the kids, not an entitlement.

sometimes those shows can be irritating cant they especially when they show todays youth its all rather upsetting and frustrating, as for kids inheritance i believe
that we worked for it we do what we want with it, if i have something to leave mykids i will but if i wanna spend every dime of it they wouldnt care anyway
they would just say its yours to spend.
i couldnt imagine if my own kids today thought that they had to leave there kids the inheritance they had worked hard for (not that they are that old
that they have worked long enough for anything realy) but when they are im prettymuch sure they wont be thinking in that way thats for sure.

Good to see you're spending your money on fine Aussie products and not imported stuff!
PS: Try fast women and slow horses, that'll soon get rid of it!
PPS: I never miss Today Tonight! (I never watch it and I don't miss it!)

Totally agree Vic. And my kids would agree too.
As for Today Tonight, I don't particularly lkie watching it, but I watch the Ch7 news so it just stays on there as I'm usually on the PC at that time. Way too much sensationalizing and promoting of Ch7 programs.

I get really annoyed too when I hear talk about the kids inheritance. Let them earn their own money. We didn't bring them into this place to feed and clothe and educate them to have to support them also after we are dead.
I have totally gone off TodayTonight after they did a beat up on the actress Abigail the other night. Made out she was derelict and homeless and squatting in a church hall up this way somewhere, when it turns out their house had been floooded out three times as had others in this area and the church had lent them the hall till the flooding gone and clean up done,
There are still farming families not able to get back to their farms, houses etc because the flooding hasn't subsided yet, but they don't do a story on that.
No, pick on someone who doesn't want to be in the spotlight anymore. They filmed her without her knowledge and made up a story to go with it. She should sue them.

It is surprising though that some kids seem to think it is their
right to your money when you kick it. Another thing I am wary about
is someone I know whose mother left her house to her son. Not long
after he and his wife (who was not a very nice person) got a smart lawyer
and got half his house. She had put nothing into the home. If this persons
mum had known this she would have turned over in her grave.
So you have to think about if you do leave something who is going
to profit from it? Back to inheritance, there are some good kids around who say,
it is your money, you worked for it, spend on yourself while you are here.
Naturally, if you are able to help you kids out now and then you will
if they are worthy of that help.

Most of the kids these days will earn much more than we ever did, in one year sometimes.
How they spend it and what they do with it is up to them. If they manage it wisely, they too can have a pleasurable retirement.
If they choose to spend it on crap and credit cards because they can't save and can't wait, this is not our problem.
I have never had enough to bail my kids out of trouble or to even help them out. Now I have a little, I'm carefully make the most of it.
Bear in mind, many of us would not have had a super fund from the time we left school to retire on. It was optional until 1997 when it became compulsory.
One of my kids hasn't spoken to me for more than 5 years because I refused to fund her drug habit. Her loss. My heartbreak.

Oh GC, how hearterly I agree with you, our kids earn a heck of a lot more than we ever did, and daughter got miffed last week because my hubby wouldn't mow s-i-l's lawn on the Friday - to help him out - so he could go to the pub on the Saturday afternoon for a betting session, and to take week old baby so as to give daughter a rest!!!!
Daughter asked me what we had planned for my big 6-0 birthday this year, as she wouldn't be able to organise anything for me - so I told her we were 'rackin' off' somewhere, don't know where, just hubby & I, and a nice bottle of plonk, and a nice quiet place to park up - actually there will be a chocolate festival at Latrobe in Tassie then, might have to plan our trip down south around that, me thinks!!
Also as I am EPOA for my mother's affairs, I am having to keep a 'log' of everything I spend for her 'cause sister thinks she might miss out on 'her share' when Mum finally pops off.
Bloomin' families - who'd have 'em?? One of these days I might just start an orphans club.

When I married for the first time in 1969, the best decision I ever made was NOT to have children. I have never regretted that decision, even though I have married again. As Oscar Wilde said, a second marriage is a triumph of hope over experience. Cheers, Tony

Inheritance, what bloody inheritance........I been married 3 times and have two to my 2nd wife, she took off with them ten yeras ago and hasn't let em contact me since, you watch the day I kick the bucket she'll be there with her hands out...either her or Chidl Support will do the dirty work for her if its before Australia Day 2018.
Fat chance of her getting anything though, I'll make sure all there is left is enough debt to cover the insurance money and any super that may be leftover... I may be a glutton for punishment but hey I aint financially stupid.
Milo I'm with you all the way buddy, I have been on comp since July 01 and will never work again, so long as there is enough to see me through each fortnight Ill be happy..

My turn for "The Flack Jacket" here. I can't agree with most of you on that. I so believe the kids of today need as much assistence as we can give. Their society is so different to the one I grew up in!!! There's a huge arguement on "us" having it tough... and I agree... We DID have it tough...but... we were taught right from wrong, work hard, and help others. There was no where near the pressure put on our generation as there is on the present generation!! I believe our children should not expect an inhetitance....but I will do everything in my power to help my kids and grandsons, by contributing as much as I can to help them in THEIR future. Maybe I'm just very fortunate... my kids and grandsons love me very much...not for what they might get out of me in the future, but for just being their mother and nonnie.
{I'm waiting for the "fallout"}
Cheers Dellie

No fallout Dellie,
We each have to do what we think is right for us and our offspring etc. I have helped some of mine from time to time, sometimes against my better judgement considering the circumstances, but necessary at the time, if we don't help them who will ? That is assuming you have the funds to do so.
However I get dam annoyed at media calling it our kids inheritance, it is OUR savings or investments for US to use as we deem appropriate, whether we help our offspring or not is entirely up to us as we see fit.
Every circumstance is different, but I plan on spending most of mine while on this earth if it makes my life a bit easier and more enjoyable, after all I worked for it. I would not however just spend money for the sake of not leaving any to the kids etc, if its there when I turn my toes up they can have it, I wont be around to be worried what they do with it once I'm gone. I remember a Wills solicitor telling me once "You can't rule from the grave", lol !

I agree with you Dellie and we are lucky to have children who don't expect anything and are appreciative of all we do for them. My girls don't expect a thing but love it when we do help.
I do have on black sheep whos hand was always out and blew every chance she was handed. No more help for that one, won't even be a mention in the will for it to be blown on booze or hocked for more money.
So I am one of the torn ones but I will enjoy my time on the planet and the house will still be left here for when I am gone. That will be a little boost along for them.
I know we all love our kids but we still have our dreams as well.
I intend to have the best of both worlds if I can.

There has to be a new name invented. Instead of the kids inheritance, we must be able to come up with something that covers "Our Savings for Our Retirement" because thats what it is.

Unfortunately in these days of lawyers and litigation, a Will, unless written with the help of a QC no less can - and probably will be contested by someone who feels left out and usually they win.
The way to stop that happening is to dispose of as much valuables as possible prior to 'departure'. I know of one person who was adamant that of his two Stepdaughters, one was to get nothing and the other get the rest. (this was in total agreeance with his wife I might add)
To this end, he recently sold his house to the favourable daughter at a VERY good price and the can rent it back for life at a reduced rent. Mum's jewellery has also been given to this girl.
What you want is not necessarily what you will get with Wills I'm afraid.
Cheers Neil

My parents were very determined to leave their 4 children with something. They struggled all their lives but managed to keep their small house. Dad was determined to be self sufficient after Mum's passing. When he finally had to go into care, our youngest brother bought the house, as he was newly married. The funds were carefully invested to a/ pay for his care and b/so that when he passed over, most of his original money was available for we 4 to share, as was their wish. It wasn't a huge amount, but each of us were very grateful that our parents made sure we got something.
As for me leaving anything for my kids, I don't have much anyway, for various reasons. I'll just be happy if there's enough left to pay for my funeral. And my kids are in total agreement with that.
Happywanderer said

There will only be enough for my funeral when I go. Was never in a position to save, have no super, hubby died when youngest was still at school. Only have what I have and no savings, so no one will be fighting over my will.
Thank goodness as the 3 don't get on that well anyway.
Firefly, if you leave a child out of a will they can contest it, if you leave them $1.00 my understandiung is they can't as you have left them what you wished.
