I have an idea that might help identification of other GN's whilst travelling about ..
While we have (or will have) stickers pertaining to us being GN's for confirmation, I feel that if we attach and fly a couple of GREY RIBBONSfrom one's radio antenna. Keep them short (6") and they wont drag the antenna over too far.
It's pretty cost effective and would attract more attention from passing vehicles in that short period of time.
If in a static position, the ribbons could still be seen at a distance to help with identification and there are further benefits that this would provide the Aussie GN's in Oz .. A good talking point when meeting prospective members on the road .. maybe a simple first step for them .. could it become a national symbol of GN recognition .. hmmmm .. ?
Your opinions would be appreciated ..

Son........Errr.......I mean Jon, that is a great idea. How about also using a black or red marking pen and writing your forum name on the ribbon, that way if another GN sees your car parked somewhere (eg; shopping centre etc) they will know who you are even though you aren't present?

What's this about abandoning the wave?
... SWMBO & I have great fun trying to pick who will wave back to us as we pass with a regal inclination of the hand or even a finger raised over the steering wheel. Although on long trips we have toyed with the idea of fixing permanently waving hands on springs to the windscreen (like those infernal nodding dogs).

That used to be an Aussie original before the adoption of the American middle finger: "Sit on this" or something similar.
I suspect that there are still a number of the "aged but not senile" larrikins who might still offer you a "mouthful of broken teeth" if you were to use it in the wrong, or even an ambiguous, context.

Yeah Vic .. I also thought of possibly embellishing the ribbons (or ribbon) by using different markings and maybe some colour patterns etc .. but I feel that by having just a single plain colour, the ID of the item will last much longer. If mutiple colours, stripes or lettering is used, the overall identity of the item will suffer from fade and shredding, as these parts wear out at differing rates .. leaving a confused piece of material flapping in the breeze ..
I believe a single plain colour will retain its ID longer as it all fades and wears out together.
another consideration .. >> maybe have 2 ribbons still .. 1 gray one representing the GN Group .. the other may be a colour representing the State they are from ?

What about ribbons in the two primary colours on the stickers - ie tan and blue.
Plastic tape is available - the type used to mark walking trails or survey points - often pink or yellow.
Short of huge banners all around our vehicles and vans, we might just have to keep our eyes peeled for fellow nomad.

When I first hit the road, I will be sporting a couple of grey ribbons attached to the front of the vehicle .. be it on a small UHF antenna on the bullbar or elsewhere that it can fly freely. Then a couple of GN bumper stickers .. one attached to the bumper bar area and the other affixed at eye-level somewhere ..
There's not one concept that will please everybody .. but my purpose in this thread is to look for something simple that will find greater acceptance with GN's in general .. thereby improving a better awareness of our fellow travellers. Remember, the GN's road is becoming more travelled and will continue to do so .. Generic harmony is essential !
My appreciation for all the input and I do hope that further suggestions will continue. Regardless of what each of us prefer, we will follow our own personal choice ..

LOL Cupie you can buy waveing hands, rememer too when we gave hand signals while driving? Trucks, busses had a mechanical hand to signal with. Of course these days it is illegal to wave your hand outside of a vehicle....

Grey ribbon sounds like and ideal and inexpensive way of identifying ourselves, there is a type of ribbon known as grosgrain, a ribbed and quite strong material, I have used it to hang horse brasses, and all my name tags from long ago square dancing days, never had a tear or other problem. Judy

That sounds interesting .. I haven't heard about that product but will look into it. Initially, I'll try something in 'Grey' 'til I can come up with an alternative. Not sure what is available, ribbon type, in a simple grey ..

Hi Everyone,
I like the two grey ribbons. Easy to see, I find it hard to look for the stickers when driving.
Everyone will know me as my number plates are yellow NSW personalised with the letters MON.
If there is a blonde driving that is me, if there is a grey headed male driving that's Bob, don't bother waving to him as he won't take his hands off the steering wheel, on the other hand I will wave madly from the passenger seat.

Nearly forgot, waving....I usually just raise a finger off the wheel hoping the other waver sees it...........not keen on taking a hand off the steering wheel, especially with the caravan on the back.

I think a good idea would be one of those moving LED signs on the back of the car or van with the message: "Caution Grey Nomad Driving" followed bythe drivers mobile number so that they casn be told to move over to let faster vehicles pass.

I can understand the link with grey ribbon, but it's probably the most difficult non-colour to see whizzing past.
That's why I suggested the brighter teracotta/tan with the bright aqua.
But if the "committee" has voted on the grey, I suppose grey it will be.
Anyway, if you're approaching from behind you will know who you're following by the spare tyre cover, on both the car and the van.

Mon, my NSW number plates are SUE (had them for 25 years). I've written grey ribbon on my shopping list - but have no visible aerials. I'll find somewhere to hang them though. But Basil, I love "caution, grey nomad driving". Think I'll have to investigate that possibility.....

Well Bob and I went shopping and bought the grey ribbon, well actually it is a nice snazzy silver..... they had no grey.
That will suit you better than grey Bassie, it will match your hair.
We bought it from the dollar and sense store, now that didn't break the bank, a whole $2 for a 38 mm x 3.6 metres AND wait for it, drum roll, it has wire edgeing, what a bargain, just think I can change it when it gets grubby.
We practised our waves on the way home, Bob actually got his right thumb carefully off the steering wheel. I suggested he use the left thumb as it would be seen easier from the road. Yep we got it off the steering wheel as well.
All in all a good day.

Well Mon, if you can't put it on your van you can decorate cakes with the spiffy, silver ribbon with the wire edging.
I'll have a look around too. Even if I'm not towing, the car will carry the "colours" of GN.

Already tied it up on the aerial Chris. Bob is still shaking his head, you never know I just might get to drive the van in future, now that it looks like a wedding car. I dont think Bob trusts my driving. Maybe it is because I can take my hand off the steering wheel to put up my thumb. You know men the can be "funny" about these things.
