Water

Hi all, anyone had any issues finding drinking water in north west NSW lately?

No, but suitable drinking water is scarce in NT & N/W WA. It's either not available or is bore water which, although it will not kill you, does not taste that good. Been travelling with a slab of water this year for drinking and cooking.

When it does rain I use the Rainsaver Clips on my awning flap. Works great and you get fresh rainwater. As I said it has to rain. Cheers. Col

It would be probably just good manners to take drinking water in the van, every drop you use of the remote locality's supply is precious to them. We buy water at supermarket, it also puts some money in the local's till.

Thanks for your advise folks! I meant to ask about filling the tanks rather than drinking water per say. I have heard that a lot of councils are cutting the water for parks and that means looking for potable water elsewhere. Sometimes there is a fresh water tap at dump sites alongside the wash hose..... but we can use bore water in the tanks just for showering dishes toilet flush etc and buy water for drinking as suggested. Boiling water is also a go as long as you boil for about 30 seconds on a rolling boil.

Dolly I would certainly not use water from Dump Point supply - There are a lot of the great unwashed out there, literally. If you have to use it boil it and keep away from van's tanks.

The water at a lot of dumps is non-potable. Even struck some dumps without water. That is when you need to catch (and maybe keep) some grey water to rinse the toilet cassette out and recharge it. I keep some plastic bottles with clean or grey water in my ute for this.

Also have a small 12v pump and a filter and will fill my tank by sucking water up out of a bucket into the tank. The water could be non-potable from a dump tap, flowing river, clean lake (careful of sand). I still do not drink or use that water for cooking.

Yeh, so true guys... You never no what the tap nozzle has been up to even when it says potable so close to the dump site. another important thing is to use your own hose on any drinking water tap just to be sure. Also if you are forced to fill the tanks with bore water, never just top it up with good water ...... throw a couple of cups of bleach in for a few hours and then drain the lot before refilling.

I read somewhere to clean your tank, connect the tap on the A-fame and run the water back into your tank via a filter.

Truth be known 1/4 of domestos would be plenty.  It's the same stuff used to chlorinate domestic water supplies.
