Old farts

Never having been to Karumba , thinking of stopping there this winter , however I have heard from a number of people that have been there that there is a brigade of old farts that think they own the place and its very clicky , anyone want to comment on that . I surfed all my early life and know first hand what LOCALISM is like . is there anywhere else that anyone has experienced it .

Happens in many places to varying degrees, not only with visitors. Speak to anyone who's moved to a country town to live, they will tell you it take years, if ever, to be regarded as a "local". Just one of those silly human "possessive" traits.

Yep every town has their clique. If they dont let you in then they arent worthy of your time and energy. Just enjoy the town.

I've been there a couple of times & have a mate who has been going up there every year for well over a decade.  He even leaves his boat up there.

I don't think that it is any more clicky than any other place.  I started off by buying fish from the successful fishermen & telling them that their home brew was a great drop.  You could buy that on the QT too.  In like Flynn!

We could give examples of clicky places down at the other end of the country .. eg on The York Peninsular where many of the regulars stored their vans on nearby properties & had them pulled on to site when they came across from the Adelaide area.  Now weren't they a selfish clicky lot.  Big, closed happy hours with piles of sand crabs & whiting et al & never an invite to us.  Didn't even get a flipper or a scale.

Then there were the lot from around Perth that congregate every year at Broome & get all upset if you dare to walk on their manacured lawns in front of their vavs.  Same attitude from them too.

The Mexicans who migrate to our Qld east coast ocean front beaches every winter are not much different.  Loverly people they are too.

I think that we are all much the same.... even Queenslanders.

If I feel left out & want to join in then I believe that it is up to me to come up with something that would start the process & make me a good companion.

Just look how people rock up to free pancake morning teas at CPs.

Could we do something similar.

Pack up & head off.

Keep your eyes peeled & brainstorm for opportunities to try when you get there.  (eg. in 1976 I took an extra suitcase full of beer when I went up to Darwin in the middle of a beer strike.  Not too successful because no one liked XXXX beer.  But I got good credits for effort & was soon part of the local mob. After a long night on the p#!!  the call would go out "Now where's that bloody XXXX" ... yea    in!)

Now, what are they short of in Karumba .. fruit & veges? Make free pavlovas for the ladies  ....    Good wine?  Wine & Cheese afternoon.....  Is SWMBO into craft .. The regulars have sewing circles (or at least used to).  Do you have a good coffee machine .. take an extra supply of good beans perhaps & invite all to free coffee & home made biscuits for morning teas.   Had a good catch of Barra ..  Bake up a goodie & put on a getting to know you lunch/BBQ.   Put a side of lamb in the freezer on the way up or a goat perhaps.  Goat curries?

Nothing wrong with getting attention by bribing your way in, and letting your natural charm take over.

It's illegal for recreational fishermen to sell their catch. QLD Fisheries will be VERY interested in that one!

The first time we visited Karumba was quite some time ago. Our son was in high school & we did the North West of Qld with him & a mate from school. I recall we were the youngest in the caravan park & chuckled at one old chap who for something to do, wiped the dust off part of the body work of his Nissan Patrol. The next day he wiped another section! Pat did the early morning bird trip while I took the boys out on a half day fishing charter. Both groups were satisfied.

Our last visit - Easter at Mt Surprise; on to the week leading to ANZAC Day at Karumba, three years ago - we were too busy looking at birds (the feathered ones) - up before dawn, back again around 4pm for happy hour. Tours, drives, we did it & saw most of the listed birds for the area. We chattered to our neighbours from "the deep south" - most were friendly enough.

Advice - Keith & Judy & "birdo" - go & find all of the birds (look up eBird to get the list).

- mezza - BOOK NOW!!

Remember two things if you are a "Fisho" - there is only ONE tide in the Gulf & don't take risks with the Big "Lizards" (the ones with big teeth & do a well known John Williamson "dance").

Thank you for the advice Warren-Pat

We were up there in May 2000 for a birding/sightseeing trip.

The only bird i saw there ,that i hadnt seen before, was the Zitting Cisticola.

As far as i am concerned the caravan park that we stayed in the Clientele we no more or less friendly than any other park.

We did enjoy the fish and chips at the pub looking over the gulf whilst having  a wine or beer.

The sunset cruise on the gulf was very enjoyable and we allso saw a lot of over winterning migratory waders flying around While we were enjoying a wine watching the sun set.

Cheers

Birdo
