water pressure

I have just installed a new water pump in as I thought it was causing my problem of not pumping off tanks, new one is the same runs for a wile then shuts off, while pumping I opened hot water and cold water taps to bleed air off still nothing . Next I connected a hose on at town pressure but it does the same the only water I con get is at the drawbar tap, any ideas ?

Hi Russell. If you called me out to do a service call regarding your problem it would go like this.I deal with it one at a time .Lets look at the mains pressure first, you say both hot and cold are poor so that means I disregard the tempering valve under the van as this is a hot water problem.I would disconnect the the cold line from the outgoing side of the pressure limiting valve and join the town line direct to that line and turn the water on.In a perfect world you would have great pressure ! end of story.I never try to clean the old valve ,I flog you a heavy duty brass one and go home ! .....However ..if the pressure is still crap when I turned it on whilst still in the temporary connection the next thing is to remove the small filters/aerators on the sink and basin taps and take the shower rosehead off leaving only the flexible hose hanging in the recess then turn the water on again.[most folk never check these and some shower roses come with a small water saver washer inside that needs to be given the flick !] To date this has fixed the problem .
Now lets look at the pump side. I presume the tank/tanks are charged so you turn on the pump and with no taps on it runs for say 30 secs and stops. You then turn on the tap any where and the pump will run until such time as you turn off the tap and the pump will cease 6secs or so later. You state that the pump pressure was poor so you renewed the pump and sadly no improvement. This concerns me insofar as you only have a line from the tanks via a few elbows and 1 tee .I would remove the the line that comes from the tanks to the incoming side of the pump remembering that its only gravity so no big water waste etc.[Now this is the real technical bit ] If possible I simply grab that line and stick it in my mouth and blow like buggery and get you to go outside and listen for a bubbling noise at the tank.If yes great ,if you come back in and I am turning blue or I have in fact passed out you may assume that the line is kinked or worse.
Carry out the first bit and then report back in due course .Cheers

Hello Burgo1

I am not a Plumber

Not knowing what type of system you have, some have a pressure switch in the water line after the pump, and others have a pressure switch inside the pump

The pressure switch is to stop the pump working if/when the taps are closed, which means pressure in the line
If the pressure switch is OK, then it may be a moving blockage in the line

Sometimes stuff accumulates in the line, the pump starts up, and this blockage is forced into an elbow
This blockage then allows enough back pressure, to tell the pressure switch, to stop working

If you are unable to follow the advice of moamajohn, then perhaps you will have to call an expert in

If you mention the model of the caravan and pump, someone with that same combination, may have had the same problem in the past

try the strainer on the sink and basin taps aswell as the shower restrictor. remove inlet side of shower rose and check.the draw bar one is the only one without a strainer, worth a try.
