Women to Women Empowerment Project.

Hello

I am a grey  nomadic woman but not in Australia....overlander overseas.  Whenever we travel our long journeys overseas I always organise a project.....For this one, I am seeking your help Ladies.

I have created a Women to Women Empowerment project for  Africa.

My partner and I will leave December 2017, and  travel down the West Coast of Africa for 8 months.

Many women in Africa have No sanitary pads and nothing to use when they have their monthly period.

I want to change this, not with Charity but with some assistance. So to help them get started, I need flannelette fabric and or good absorbant fabric for making pads to take with me over there.

My plan is to make some sanitary pads  here at Carmila, Qld (where I live) and take templates, scissors, needles, thread and fabric so I can show the women in remote places 'how' to make them. The pads I take with me will be machine sewn, but I will teach them over there; sewing them by hand.

I need new or good quality secondhand flannel or flannelette to take. Pieces as small as 1/4 metres or larger is good too. Any colours. Bright and patterned fabrics are great. Some cotton fabric for backing will also be useful.

If anyone can assist with donating some that they have or buy a piece to donate it would be very well received.

The  Flaggy Rock/Carmila/Ilbilbie Women Quilters group has offered to assist with a Sewing/ Working Bee to be held at 10am at the Flaggy Rock Community Centre and Campground on Friday 8th September.  Any of you ladies who are around our neck of the woods would be welcomed, if you want to come and join us and help. You don't need to be a sewing person as there is lots of cutting out to be done too.

If you can't join us on the day, then any flannelette fabric, cotton, buttons, needles  you wish to donate, you can leave them with Kay (caretaker) at Flaggy Rock or leave a package  at Carmila Petrol station with my name on it. (Rensina van den Heuvel)

Please share this with your  travelling women friends.

Just a thought - contact Days for Girls. They are a not for profit group that specialize in making sanitary pads etc. They produce a good kit and know a lot about what materials are acceptable in overseas countries eg. printed fabric with animal or people pictures on them not acceptable, some animal prints also unacceptable, anything with skulls also unacceptable. Geometric designs are acceptable and plain colours. I don't know enough detail so please contact them direct. All the best with your endeavour. Cheers.
