Best inland road from Melbourne to Charters Towers

Hi everyone, we are about to head north in early June from Melbourne up to the Daintree ( in our 2 door Prado & 21'6'' van)  & have always gone either up the Hume to Sydney then the coast from there to Cairns or Newell hwy to Brisbane etc

we have planned to go to Charters Towers then onto the coast from there & would love to hear from anyone who has travelled the B55/A55 through Lightning ridge, Roma, Emerald etc or even up through Griffith, Bourke, Charleville etc on the B71/A71 for advice on

road conditions, campsites/van parks, fuel stops ,things to see

We are planning on taking about 3 weeks to get to the Daintree

Cheers  Rick & Robyn

Personally I avoid major busy highways especially Newell and Bruce.

Up through Cobar / Bourke is great and no where near the traffic.

Lightning Ridge way is also good. Plenty of free camps everywhere in NSW, jus have a look at Camps book or Wikicamps.

I plan a couple of days ahead normally based on what I hear from those travelling in opposite direction plus Camps/Wikicamps.

Cant go wrong IMHO going these routes.

welcome

Welcome to the forum Boatee.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.
