Great Central Highway

Glad to be on your forum. Just wondering if there was advice out there as to the wisdom of driving across the Great Central Highway in a 2015 diesel Forester towing a Avan Cruise Liner? Thanks

Hi Kasey, Haven't been on that highway but if you click on SEARCH above and type in Great Central Highway there are reports etc. from others who have driven it. This may be of some help till someone who has traveled it very recently comes along. Cheers. Also welcome.

We travelled from Uluru to Laverton last year with Prado and semi off road van. There were plenty of corregations and the WA section was much better than the NT section. It was closed a few times last year with the rains so you would have to watch that. Permits are needed in both states. Reduced tyre pressures and appropriate speed is important but a interesting trip with not a lot of other vehicles.

We traveled from Uluru to Laverton in September - October 2016 and the road was good all the way. Even the famed bad strip from Uluru to the WA border. We have a Izuzu D-Max towing an Expanda Outback. We reduced pressure in tyres. Permits are required for WA & NT aboriginal areas and are available on line. The permits are for three days, if you want longer, apply for a second permit after the first one expires. Diesel is readily available, though it was the most expensive fuel we have EVER purchased. You don't need to pay Uluru entry fees if you are passing through as the permit allows travel through the area

What sort of tyres are recommended should they be all terrain? We drive a SUV towing camper trailer .
We are considering that route Sometime between July and September.
Just wondering if perhaps we are being a bit ambitious although have done a fair bit of traveling mainly on the black top.
I think we need advice. With thanks we Enjoy reading all about the experiences of others.

We used the tyres that came stock standard on the D-Max, certainly not off road tyres. Car doesn't need to have high clearance.
Pakrak, your xtrail and camper would be OK. You definitely need something to deflate & inflate your tyres to help smooth out the road if it's a bit rough
Have you looked at this website - http://www.outbackway.org.au/
