small dog safety cental Northern territory eagles and dingos

Hi people

Im thinking of moving for work into central Northern Territory. I have always had bigger independant dogs and have never had to worry about this situation before. As i am from Darwin and travelled alot I am aware that wedge tailed eagles and dingos can be a problem for small dogs. I now have two of the pint sized terrors.

Has anyone been in this situation?

The area I "may" be heading is Tennat creek and there are not alot of fences on the houses up there. I can put up temporary dog fences but am still worried about the eagles and possiblity that dingos may jump the fence. The area has a lot of camp/community dogs, of which I am not so worried as they are usually pretty well socialised.

Also if i take them bush or out travelling, sightseeing has anyone had problems with the eagles.

I have heard of some being taken, I have also heard a man was walking his King Charles and a dingo sprung from the bushes and took him the dog from within 2 meters of the owner, lucky he was heavy enough for the owners to give chase and the dingo gave up.

Thanks in advance for your blunt honest answers

I would definitely be putting up an enclosure that eagles, other dogs, large goannas cannot get into.

Hi

Lived at Warrego Mine near Tennant Creek years ago. Visited the town many times as I was a thirsty young miner in those days.

Most local dogs are Dingoes or a cross. Mostly owned by real Australians. There was a major problem with dogs roaming everywhere and attacking locals kids and tourists in the street.

A dog catcher was employed by council from outside to control the problem they caused. He warned everybody that all dogs on the loose would be destroyed. So the local camps tied them up.

He went to the camps and shot each one on the lead. Got them cleaned up in one day. Problem gone. No more roaming dogs. Streets now safe for kids and tourists. He was sacked by council and had to get out of town quickly!

Make sure your dog has all the shots it needs as many there do not immunize their dogs.

Wedge Tail Eagles I have seen them kill a Fox. So a small dog no problem. Seen them on Granite Downs Station SA attacking a 5 foot kangaroo after rain. They are cunning.

They "dive bomb" the roo and hit his eyes over and over. They keep him on the muddy road to tire him out and slow him down. Eventually the roo cannot see. Then they have him where they want. Blind and tired. Amazing stuff you see in the bush. The dingoes and wildlife would eat you and me if we were disabled in the bush.

Nobody believed Lindy Chamberlain that a dingo could take her baby but my bushmen friends and I did. This was later proved and she was released from jail.

Lol. Ummm yes I know it's something I really have to consider. I love the birds but love my dogs too. Interesting about the dog catcher. Thanks for that bushman ð. It's also really hard finding rental up there.
