Mount Surprise, Qld

Hi all, I have to tell this story about the Planet Earth Adventures caravan park in Mount Surprise Qld. We have stayed here a couple of times and loved the lay back attitude of Russell, the owner and Snake Man. A couple of weeks ago I got the dreaded message that my Mum was very ill and not likely to make it.  We were at Karumba on the Gulf and decided to head back to Mt Surprise, leave the van and fly home from Cairns.  We have just returned and find that Russell will not accept any money for the week were away even though we were hooked up to power for the duration!!  We have never met such a trusting, genuine bloke in all our travels. The park has a lovely feel about it, Russell's Snake Shows are a must, and his cheap meals are just great. We cannot recommend it enough.  If you stay at Russell's park please tell him that Brownie sent you so that he knows how appreciative I am!!  By the way, I am sad to say Mum did pass away but it is the nature of people like Russell that helps us through.

We have stayed at Russel's - a very relaxed spot, as you say - love the showers!
We met a French couple, who riding bicycles around the world - we had passed them on the road earlier. Anyway - dark, cosy inside the motorhome, knock at the door - there stands a skinny very tanned guy, long hair in a pony tail, and coke bottle glasses on his nose. In halting English he said he had meat to cook, but no way to cook, a butcher in a nearby town had give it to them (they live on the rent from their home in Marseille) - they thought all caravan parks had a bbq - no, not Russells. Any loaned them a frypan, some tongs etc., and a bottle of good red - and invited them to breakfast!

We are still friends now - they are in Florida at the moment, and keep us up with their travels - while in Oz here, they hit the 80,000k mark!!!

I have also stayed at the Freddy Flintstone one - very nice, good atmosphere, very friendly.

So my vote is split between the two - would recommend either.

You guys mustn't have looked. Check out the photos and you will see a unique BBQ that Russell provides. It is sitting 5m from our van right now, and anyone can use it.

The meals served each night and the fire pit, entertainment really made for a wonderful stay. If you are thinking of calling into Mount Surprise Bedrock Caravan Park you will enjoy it.
