Bourke to Broken Hill

Hi All,

pretty new to this, have been on here a while but just about to put it to good use (or try)

in a couple of weeks, heading on our longest venture ever and was looking for a bit of advice.

Has anyone travelled along the road from Bourke to Broken Hill via Waanaring & White Cliffs & Wilcannia.

Not sure of the condition of that road so thought I'd ask if there is any kind traveller out there that has been on that road recently that might be able to give some comment.

It is White Cliffs that I want to visit but not sure whether to go through Waanaring or go south from Bourke and hook up to the Barrier Hwy and travel through Wilcannia where I would go north to White Cliffs and then back track after that to go on to Broken Hill.

This, by the way, is only a very small leg of a very long journey.

Just travelling in a 2wd ute with a 15ft caravan if that makes any difference??

And please feel free to comment if I have placed this post in the incorrect place.

Thanks Heaps

I've just popped in to check if I can obtain the same information KW. Suddenly got keen about this trip myself only today. We've a Ford Ranger 4 x 4 but the van isn't offroad (Millard Weekender).

Anyway, it may be one of us that completes a report as you haven't had a reply. biggrin

Hi Guys,, as well as real time info from GN's these two websites show road conditions,,, make sure if road is closed you don't travel on em please,,,locals get realy upset, and quite rightly so,,  if you do plus it's easy to get bogged.

Sunday 11th May 14 (take a note - also know as mother's day - don't forger)

Have decided to change route and go through Cobar from here (Four Mile Camping Ground at Brewarrina)to Broken Hill. This seems to be he sensible way to go.

For those interested, free camp stopovers seem a little on the scarce side here, but this place isn't too bad, 6klm's or so off the highway but at least somewhere to pull off for the night. Should get in as early as possible though to get  good spot, although don't imagine that it would happen too often that you couldn't get a spot.

There are cold showers and toilets (but only just) 5star it is not. But then we are not paying 5star rates and it seems a relatively safe place to bed down as there are 10 or 15 caravans pulled in here. Safety in numbers as they say.

Stayed at the Opal Caravan Park in Lightning Ridge for the two previous nights, now that is as close to 5 star as one would ever find in a caravan park I think.

Catch up a little later

kw,,, there are heaps of free camp sites along the road, you don't need 10-15 vans there to find one.

Look for old roads, gravel pits, tracks along stock routes where you can get away from the main road.
