Gas Bottle refill

We bought a new 2kg gas bottle to replace our out of date one that we use for our small camping appliances.  We tried to get it filled at the BCF store at Tuggeranong where we bought it but they no longer provide this service.

So I spent half a day traipsing around the usual places like Bunnings, Fyshwick BCF, other hardware stores, and the servos I could remember, only to find they no longer refill gas bottles at these outlets either.  Why are they allowed to sell gas bottles if they are banned from filling them?

Old reliable BBQ's Galore were out of gas.  Apparently they are always out of gas.

Anyway, if anyone does know anywhere in, or near, Canberra I can get my gas bottle filled I would be much obliged.

They are not BANNED from filling them they just choose not to as it is a very time consuming operation and staff have to be trained and there is next to no profit in doing it....
Your best chance is an out of town servo that offers good old fashioned service..

I've found I can get a swap for less than a refill plus I usually get a newer cylinder than what I had. A win all round so why bother refilling?

True that works for the 2 popular size gas cylinders but when it come to the others like the OP is talking about they need to be refilled and finding someone to to it can be a pain, if they live up here at Grafton I would gladly do it for them..cry

Give thought to replacing the old LPG stove and replace it with one that uses the disposable butane packs, Bunnings have them for $20 and they come with a small BBQ plate included.
Maybe run your stove from a 4kg bottle that way you can always get a refill should be able to buy a hose from a gas supplies place that will connect the 4kg bottle.
Ask for refund for the 2kg bottle as you cannot get it filled.
Cheers
David

Grandma n Opa: - I've just returned from shopping and there's a sign outside Rays Outdoors Shepparton saying 9kg gas bottles filled for $24.
Rays Outdoors might be worth trying if there's a store near you.
I was told that the Swap & Go bottles only get filled to 80%.
BOC gasses have the swap bottles for $22.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers - John

Thanks David.  We love the set up we have, it works well and a 2kg bottle takes up less room.  If we cannot find anywhere to get the bottle filled we will be asking for a refund for sure.

Thanks John.  It is only a small 2kg bottle to save space.  Ray's Outdoors in ACT do not fill them.

Gday...

I don't know about Canberra ... but I searched the Barbeques Galore site and got this ...

I am sure there must be somewhere in Canberra that refills cyclinders ... ask at some of the camping stores.

B B Q's Galore at Lake Haven fill bottles as I am sure so do Bunnings. I did an exchange at Bunnings Belmont yesterday at $22. (9 kg) If all else fails the little shop near the Budgewoi Primary school fills bottles

If you ever come down the big hill to Batemans Bay, you may find that the camping shop on the highway south of town will fill a gas bottle.

Not sure about this information, but apparently they have filled gas bottles in the past, so it might be worth an ask!   cheers   Capricorn

Many had to remove their large filling bottles because they did not pass regulations in relation to their locations.  Others stopped offering the service apparently in response to the ACT government telling them that their refilling facilities were sub-standard and the hassle of getting them up to standard was too much hassle for them so they removed the refill equipment altogether.  Also safety inspections were carried out that apparently revealed poor refill practices by inexperienced staff so again they were faced with the hassle of having trained staff available.

Yes Barbeques Galore do refills but they are always out of gas, probably because everyone in Canberra goes there, but I am not aware of anyone who has been there and had any luck.

 Zackly..crycrycrycry

I spent the last 20yrs of my working life in the gas industry so I understand what these resellers are going through and I don't blame them for giving it a miss..

Whats happened to the BCF ? we use them most of the time as their price is as good as it comes, swaps are normaly twice the price.

A lot of service stations fill bottles, especially in tourist areas. Last 2kg bottle I had filled cost $10.00, but prices can vary up to $16.00. Also your old cylinder being out of date, you can have tested and re-certified with a new expiry date. My last one cost $20.00.
