THE PUTTY ROAD NSW

Exactly half way between Singleton and Windsor there is a new cafe called GREY GUM CAFE.

These people have put a lot of time, money and effort into their dream. John and Kim Grace are a retired couple who wanted to provide a service for the travelling public INCLUDING us Nomads.

They have 26 acres where you can park your van for up to 48 Hours and it's FREE.

There are a couple of very large brassiers and fire wood is supplied.

The amenities are spotless and for a nominal fee you can have as many hot showers as you would care to have.

They do really nice food, service with a smile and I can highly recommend a stop over there if you are in the area.

I did ask were they going to put in petrol bowsers and they said definitely NOT. Their aim was to provide a tranquil setting where people can get a good nights sleep if they are staying over and not be interupted by cars and trucks coming and going filling their tanks.

Well they certainly have provided a tranquil setting as Blue and I slept so well we even slept in and that's saying something for us.

They could have spent their retirement nest egg on themselves but instead they chose to offer a service to others and in their words "maybe we might help to keep the road toll down if people have somewhere to pull up and rest "

They serve the best BLT this side of the moon. A while back I put a page for the Grey Gum Cafe on my website which contains many photos, including feeding the kangaroos at dusk and some shots of meals that I have enjoyed there.

What you may not be aware of, is some pinhead in Council tried to close them down, citing safety and the need for another traffic lane for turning in. It would have cost them about $300,000 to put that in which would have been prohibitive. Kim took the fight to the council and the bike riders joined in the fray. Eventually a bike rider who was an RTA safety officer got involved. The council retreated with its tail between its legs.

The extra lane is still going in, but Kim and John will only have to pay a fraction of the cost. I think that everyone recognises the real safety benefit of having this there, as Kim & John are providing a great rest stop with good amenities. If the council had provided this, it would have cost an arm and a leg.
