I am ashamed to share the planet with these people!!!!

just read the posting on todays nomad frontpage, and I am as angry as all hell about it, folks leaving their mates behind, no not husbands or wives, although I could uderstand that at times, the mates that I am talking about is our little four legged buddies, I am most upset and very angry that an animal that calls it self a human could do such a thing!!!

apparently instead of enjoying a life of retirement together these mongrels are casting their little mates off at a rapid rate of knots, heaving the little fellers off to the r.s.p.c.a. to face god knows what future if any, probably a needle for what was a life of absolute joy and blind loyalty given by these little fellers for absolutely no reason

three words to those who have done this, SHAME ON YOU!!! , you are no freind of the guru!!, you are not welcome at the guru's campsite, to throw a little mate aside simply because it may be awkward for your future is an act of mongrelism that cannot be forgiven under any circumstances, I have a tear in my eye just thinking of this despicable act,  it is you who should face the r.s.p.c.a. and their bloody needles, not the dog left to face the horrors of not having his pack with him any more.

SHAME!!!.................. SHAME!!!................ SHAME!!! ......................... ON YOU!!!

so you must search out a pet freindly place to stay, SO WHAT!!!  there are hundreds of them and information absolutely everywhere as well as in here to guide you,

so you must find a doggy placement for a day while you go into a national park, SO WHAT!! they are everywhere and they are cheap, ask a freind to care for him for a day then reciprocate it for them

why condemn your best mate to death because he has become a minor inconvienience to your lifestyle,

what if your husband/wife suddenly became ill, and as such, a burden would you do the same to them, chuck them in an old folks home to rot while you go trapsing around!!

I dont want to share a camp or a beer or a conversation with such a heartless person!!! .........I dont even want to look at you!

SHAME!!............... SHAME!!!...................... SHAME!!!,

not happy Jan!!! ................does not describe it,................ BLOODY LIVID JAN!!! comes close,

you are lower than the animal you cast aside!!!

G'day Dave,

Now I know why I prefer animals to human beings, these people are the scum of the earth and deserve to be treated as such.

Yes Dave there are people around who would abandon their spouse if he or she became ill and a burden, they simply pack up and walk out on them, I have known a few and bloodied one or two noses as a result.

How anyone could leave a beautiful, faithful, trusting and loving friend, a mate that would lay down it's life in your defence without a single thought as to it's own saftey is totally beyond my comprehension, just thinking about it causes a lump in my throat, it is such a shame there are such mongerels about.

Best Regards.
John

Hi Dave & John,
Can't agree with you more.
Can't understand why they don't take the effort to take them with them.
Wife, corgi and I (note..me last in order in our house!!!!! - not so) are off for 3 weeks touring Great Ocean Rd from mid next month.
I had the NRMA book, a pet friendly book and within two hours had booked a number of sites, all of which welcome us and also the dog.
Took no time at all.
Both us and the dog (Misty) loves the travelling, enyoys meeting and talking to people at our stops.
If we get desperate and need to do something...say 40th wedding anniversary dinner while away, we already have found some dog sitters/kennels who she can stay with for a day or night...the dog, not the wife!!!!
Took very little effort and not much additional expense.
We have a neighbour who just lost their dog after 15 years..she is devastated. She is already talking about replacing with another.
True dog lovers unite!!!!!!!!

Hi Dave and Everyone Else.

Just read your post Dave, I have been away so I missed what you read in the Nomads.  As you know, both my partner and I have a dog each, we never have any trouble with either of them when we travel.  I have been travelling alone now for the past six months ( in that six months I have done over 20 thousand kilometres )  and I work around having Max with me.  What I do is free camp, as you suggested, and it works well.  I have found that most caravan parks will let me have just a shower for $5, I am happy to do this and then free camp.  I also go to the local pool, have a swim, spa and shower, all for the mighty price of $5.70.  Last week when my partner and I went camping for a week, we had no trouble with both the dogs, actually the dogs had a great time, they love the van and each other, get along well and are great company for each other when we leave them.  All we need to do is find a shady spot to park the van when we want to go shopping, leave the windows open and fresh water in their bowls,  if it is still too hot, one of us stays with the dogs while the other ones does the shopping, it is no bother.  We still manage to do what we want to.  We are a family it is the four of us or none.  It works for us and I am sure it will work for everyone else if they just put the effort into it.  For those of you who must stay at a caravan park, most will let you have the dog in your van, as long as you keep him/her leashed on their property and pick up the droppings.  It is just a matter of asking at the office, as most of the caravan parks do not advertise the fact they allow dogs.

Hi Dave and John and Peter and NannyMon,

I am with you all - as the saying goes the more I see of (some) people the more I love my dogs!
...and it's not just travellers/nomads, one hears some pretty awful stories of mans cruelty to our best mates I wonder if they ever stop to think about the message that they are giving to their own kids/grandkids? What a great message (not) that our best mates are just another disposable item. Any wonder some of the kids are growing up with some very warped values?

As you have all discovered already it really isn't hard to take one's mate's along, just a little more planning at times, plenty of Carvan Parks where dogs are still allowed, plenty of places to go where dogs are welcome and what sort of a holiday would it be without a warm soft dog curled up at one's feet at the camp fire (or, in the case of Clancy the Whippet, curled up on one's lap!)

Some people just should never contemplate having a dog, they do not deserve to have all that love.

Annie and her boyz

I also have been away, and on reading Sir Daves post, searched for the article he refers to, but was unable to locate it. As I understand it someone disposed of their pet, so they may travel - SHAME ON YOU (other language is used privately)

It does though raise an issue I was pondering on my travels WITH MY MATE

I am a ute and swag traveller, as with Nanamon, I free camp so having him with me is no real issue. We stop at local parks for walks and when I find a spot well off the beaten track, he gets an off lead run.

My Issue
While travelling, I did take the time to note what was available for pet travellers, and was disappointed at the lack of it. Again, as Nanamon points out, most CP will allow dogs, but do not advertise the fact. Only one such CP, just south of Rockhampton Qld, had a sign "pets welcomed"

As GN's, most would have a pet at home, and I can understand their concern regarding pet travel. Why do not more CP and other accomodation advertise, why do National Parks forbid pets (on lead), Surely we travellers are of $ value, as with backbackers.

My conclusion was, we need to make representation to the powers that be, and activity start to make a change. Sure, we need to understand the issue, and form arguments to address them.

So I am prepared to do this, but if others are of the same mind, and are prepared to be actively involved, then let me know. I am thinking that a working party should form to discuss the topic and form a action plan.

I am not into a committee of "talk", but a group of "go getters". We are the head of the food chain, and therefore, responsible for the whole of it. I think some pets are missing out on quality time with their family, solely because we have not started to change the thinking of the powers that be, on their behalf.

I'm active with the RSPCA and though I don't condone the official line of hysteria that they sometimes employ it does sicken me to see people dumping unwanted pets so that they can live the high life. OK dogs cats tortioses do get lost and can usually be reuinited, but to cast off a pet, well no way could I do it.... In fact as silly as this sounds if Gracie should predecease me (chances are high) then she will be cremated and kept in a ceramic container untill I meet my maker then the 2 of us will be scatterd together at a secret place that we both love to visit....
Dave said: what if your husband/wife suddenly became ill, and as such, a burden would you do the same to them, chuck them in an old folks home to rot while you go trapsing around!!
Dave sorry old mate but this is exactly what I'd do, that way they would get at least some quality of life while I continued on my debauched way along the road to Damascus with the sword of Damacles over my head....

Basil I agree that maybe a GOOD quality nursing home, once duly "sussed out" and found to be very agreeable and comfy would be a good spot to "place" a loved one as would a responsible family to take over the love and comfort of one's pet

but what makes my blood boil and brings tears to my eyes is the fact that this is not considered and our little mates are just flung to the rspca for the shot because they have "outlived their usefulness"

now I know you would not let cybil get the shot in some lonely rspca surgery simply because you wished to travel..

I just (and still do ) found this idea to be disgusting and downright deplorable and still upsets me greatly..................

ah yes many times I have said "one of these days woman, POW!!! right in the kisser" but the difference between us and them, is that these mongrels do it. we joke about it, they do it!!

tempting as it may be, we never would, you as I, would be lost without our anchor!!

we missed our little mates something cruel while we were away and the greeting we got on our return was nothing short of overwhelming, how could these heartless people throw all that affection away as nothing!! when given in such a way

A horsewhip comes to mind, but then maybe that is far too kind.

I am planning on taking my old girl (Kelpie x Smithfield 10 years old) and know it is going to limit when and or where I can go places, but so what. The pluses far outweigh the minuses. Anyone who could treat a creature so badly needs shooting!

Then there is "Buckley" the poor little dog that some truly cruel person cut the area & tail off with scissors. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25811115-661,00.html

How could anyone do this? I'd love to get hold of him and give him the old "red hot poker" up their backside...

yes i seen that on the news, they estimate 6 cuts per ear and god knows how many to get the tail off

I could think of a few things to do to these ingrates, death by a thousand cuts maybe, or perhaps the same medicine dealt back to them,

I actually rang the news room about that dog, the story touched me so deeply I wanted to adopt him, even though I was very quick I was beaten by at least a dozen others, so I can only assume he has a good home now, poor little feller

G'day

It seems to be the norm with a lot of people where dogs are brought as some sort of fashion accessory, the puppy looked cute at the time but now it has grown we don't like him as much lets dump him eh.

I think those that want to own a dog should do some sort of character test to see if they are fit enough to own one it seems in a lot of cases "money" comes before the pet if the pet is any sort of inconvenience to the owner it's simply given away or dumped.

To me this shows very poor character no integrity what so ever and you will find 9 times outta 10 these sort of people will treat their fellow man with the same contempt it makes me sick.

A pet is for life not to be tossed aside like a piece of garbage i would do anything to get my Kelpie back but unfortunately she is gone but had a great life you can read about her here i have just started a page on her me and the missus will be gettin another one a month or so before we head off. http://aroundozwithstunshaz.yolasite.com/red-dog.php
